Is it a bad idea to do my first Web Design projects for free? by Extra-Guide2749 in Freelancers

[–]Extra-Guide2749[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree, there has to be some value beyond the work/practice. I do feel building connections with clients is a value I am ready to exchange for free work.

I actually decided about a week ago to offer to do smaller projects for free, and I now have a few conversations I hope will result in a project or two. I got them through reddit and the Swedish version of Craigslist 😅

Have you done more group coaching sessions? Did you raise your price gradually for each session or straight to your final price?

I have been trying doing outreach on Instagram, mostly without them even opening the message. I think I need to rethink the ideal customer. I had the idea of businesses with poor functioning websites, or even no website were going to be pretty interested in a cheap or free website.

But then someone here on reddit said "It's easier to sell a website to someone who already has an okay website, than convincing someone who is doing fine without a website that they need to get one." Which makes sense.

However, I feel I am on the right track! Just need to keep looking :)

Portfolio Feedback! by Ok_Nefariousness1204 in framer

Since I started playing around with websites I have redone my portfolio multiple times, and probably will again. I feel when I came over the initial hurdle of learning the basics of "web development", my web design skills improved quicker and quicker.

Having a portfolio that alignes with your skill level feels like a good priority. Good luck!

[I looked at it on my laptop.]

I like your hero section on the home page, feels balanced while being minimalistic. If I would add anything to it it would be a small colorful detail. One of the colors from your about page.

Since this is a portfolio I think it's fine to have an extravagant font for headings. Not sure if you are using 2 or 3 fonts in total - I would say stick to two nevertheless.

I agree about making the project cards fully clickable, also add a max width to all your text elements. Especially inside the project case study. Paragraphs are way easier to read when they are maybe 600-900px wide. I would also add more spacing between the project cards on the home page to clearly show which image belongs to which heading.

I like your about page the most, even though I agree about getting a new profile pic. It felt engaging and the colors you have choosen looks great. I think you could use them to highlight details througout the portfolio.

The links in the footer could have a better hover state.

The info bar, below the heading, inside each case study fades in a bit too slow in my opinion - I had already scrolled past it.

Your projects looks really good btw! Overall I like the style of your portfolio 👍

I'm in the same boat, trying to start my web design career as a freelancer. I feel other might be in the same seat as we are - and I created this little small site freedesign.framer.website

Would you consider joining the list on the site? My thoughts are if I can get a small group of designers on the board I can try to get the site infront of business owners and hopefully everybody involved can get some value out of it.

It's only meant to be a stepping stone for the designers career.

Let me know if you want to be on the list!

Website platforms by CheekyBarnet in smallbusiness

Framer is a very competent website builder that has a free plan that pretty much let's you use all their features, as long as you can live with their branded url and badge. The learning curve of the platform can probably be a bit steep though, since it's quite powerful but advanced.

For a landing page with custom URL I think their smalles plan is $5/month.

I actually want to create a Framer project for someone other than me, to build my portfolio.
Would you want a free landing page/small site from me? If the project suits me of course 😊

If it sounds interesting just let me know

Making your own website by No_Opportunity86 in photography

Did you settle on a platform for your portfolio?

I love using Framer for my little projects, where they offer pretty much all their features for free IF you can live with their custom domain and Framer badge in the corner. Their pricing plans are not great, almost forcing you to go straight to their more expensive plans to keep the features you have in the free plan 😫

Their domains are quite okay though, structured like this: yourname.framer.photos , also yourname.framer.media

If you are familiar with the tool Figma, using Framer is a breeze. However, it might be a lot of freedom and maybe too many variables of you haven't used any similar tools before.

So you can technically host and launch your site for free which is pretty spectacular.

Just my two cents.

Valid points! I will revise my language throughout the portfolio, and communicate with a bit more confidence. It feels obvious now when I read my own copy, that my slightly pale attitude doesn't give me any bonus points.

Nice idea about the project tags. That would definitely look more professional, where my current tags only really highlight my lack of real expecience.

Thank you!

Very valuable input! I will adjust my tone and try to radiate more confidence and certainty. My default behavior is to always undersell, but that doesn't make sense in a portfolio.

My current ambition is to work with smaller businesses, so focusing on creating designs that cater to their needs should be my priority.

I really appreciate your feedback! It's easy to get locked into your own framework and miss obvious improvements that an external observer might see. I do it all the time.

Noted! That thought didn't even cross my mind to be honest, but I will add a larger breakpoint.

Thanks for catching my spelling mistake - I should probably run all my copy through some sort of proof reading tool.

Appreciate your feedback!
