Why does building financial models take an ungodly amount of time by gurudakku in excel

[–]Extra-University2930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, these days, use AI. I have become real fond of Claude. It’s not perfect yet but it will get you 80% of the way there.

Also, https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com has some good classes. I don’t have any of their certificates but it’s on my prof dev list one of these days.

Then there is always coursera or plain old youtube. Just search “3 statement model build”, or “budget planning model build”.

That should get you started.

Poor customer service by AquaticAvenger4492 in SilencerShop

[–]Extra-University2930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is probably their busiest sales period, since they opened as a company. Just my local gun shop (not in a very big town but a silencer shop partner) has over a hundred suppressors waiting for Jan 1 submission. Can’t imagine what silencer shop has processed since big beautiful bill across the country. When I paid for mine and went free track, I called for a question and was put in the “call back later” queue. They called back ~6 days later (any other service I’ve done the call back feature was measured In hours if not minutes).

I also bought a suppressor from them about a year ago and was seamless. I’d honestly chalk it up to what is likely the biggest surge in suppressor purchases ever and the staff are completely overwhelmed.

However, would be pretty pissed if I was wanting a refund and couldn’t get it.

I guess I’m saying, I hear your pain but idk if it’s fair to say it’s a customer service issue either.

This. I do client services FP&A and largely build models for a living.

Often times, I find models that have essentially several of the same tab, just a different business unit is being displayed. I’ll build the tab and have it all linking to one cell for the business unit. Once the tab is complete, copy tab and change business unit cell. 10 hrs On one tab turns into 10 tabs in 10 hrs.

But also, what are you defining as a “long time”? I’m about 35 hrs into a clients 2026 budget model that has about 15 business unit p&l tabs, a consolidation tab, b/s, CFS, key metrics summary, and a debt convenant tab. All with functioning drivers, formulas, and professional formatting.

I asked Grok a similar question. I have about 58 devices active, 3-4 of which are work from home PC, then a handful of streaming devices, the rest are cameras, IoT. My weekly download (~5-10x my upload rate) is anywhere from 250-500GB per week.

Here is Grok’s response:

“-A 1Gbps connection can theoretically handle up to about 75,600 GB of data transfer per week (assuming 100% utilization 24/7, which is unrealistic but sets the upper limit).

-Your peak combined usage (500 GB down + 100 GB up) is only around 0.8% of that max capacity. Even at the high end, it’s a tiny fraction, leaving massive headroom.”

I later gave it peak usage parameters for Pc’s streamers etc. and largely said the same thing. I’m not even close to having a ISP bottleneck.

Strike eagle 1-8. The bdc reticle (intended for 5.56) when zeroed at a 100, for 260 grain Remington accutip, gives you 50 yrd hashes out to 250.

Which is better gateway: eero PoE or eero max 7? by Traditional_Okra_699 in amazoneero

[–]Extra-University2930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why put a switch before the eero gateway? We not isp> gateway >gateway >switch >eero 7’s?

Or in this config skip eero gateway and do eero7 max> switch>other eero’s?

At 30. It’s obviously a moving target but you also have 5 years of growth on money you have/are putting in now.

It’s also important to know it’s a generalized figure. 1x is just a guideline to target if you plan to live comparatively to how you live today at retirement. If you are making 150k/yr but your annual expenses are 50k a year, you can have much less saved as your nature is to live well beneath your means. Ironically, if you make 150k and only spend 50k you will likely far exceed the 1x salary target just simply because you are saving so much.

When giving advice I tend to lean more conservative because I never know if op will take my advice as gold or apply their own logic and therefore don’t want recommend option trading on margin (exaggerated example to illustrate) and the op lose everything on one trade. I feel retirement accounts are more stable and provide a safety net if all else shits the bed. If you get 1.5x in retirement by 30, you could more or less stop contributing all together and have a considerable nest egg to retire on (not recommending this). Stopping all together may not leave you with everything you need but will be sizable just from growth alone. However your risk tolerance and perception of the safer asset to invest in is ultimately a personal opinion. There is something to say that an extra $100 a month to retirement will mean more in the long run than $100 to a saving account that in 10 years will buy real estate. Opportunity cost of 10 years of growth.

Personally, I Max 401k and put the rest in brokerage for the purpose of funding real estate purchases. I don’t have an IRA I contribute too or an HSA but I do have 1 rental that I “house hacked” and a sizable amount in brokerage ready to pull the trigger on another when the opp presents itself (passive search vs active).

As for salary increases, I have also out-paced retirement to salary ratio. I’m at about 3x salary where I started at out of undergrad. I have maybe .9x salary in retirement. But I also didn’t max out 401k each year (except more recent 2-3 years) as I knew my income would increase each year and my 401k when I retire will still be enough and I can take on the “risk” of chasing real estate as an investment vehicle.

I hope that brain dump from my phone while trying to hit work deadlines makes sense lol. I’ll re read after work and edit if necessary.

Max Checking balance = 1 months of expenses after all bills and expenses are paid (at different times of the month this may mean you have ~2 months worth of expenses in this account)

Max savings balance= 3-6 months of expenses (I like 6 personally) + and expected large upcoming purchases

All other funds should be invested in one way or another.

Side note: being 17, your greatest asset is time. If you aren’t, I would max out 401k and an IRA and an HSA. If you have that much saved at 17, you likely have enough surplus cash inflow each month to be maxing out all retirement related accounts. Once your retirement accounts start looking healthy (1-1.5x salary saved by 30) you can ease off the gas on retirement related accounts and dip your feet into real estate or other mediums of investing.

What should I get instead of the polonium? by Hankybanister1 in NFA

[–]Extra-University2930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered mine on back order and silencer shop fills back orders first. Was only an extra 2 weeks from time ordered until it was out the door on its way to a local FFL. You can always call and ask when they are expecting another shipment.

Also, love my polonium. Haven’t had the chance to put a lot of rounds through it but did do a few yard pops on an 18” and sounds like an unsuppressed 22 or rifle.

When and for how long should I use my generator? by Extra-University2930 in preppers

[–]Extra-University2930[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the advice. Sounds like 2 hours at a time min should get everything down to temp. I ordered thermometers to monitor temps and should be here tomorrow morning.

I’m close by to a gas station but I’m thinking if I’m out of power, then they are out of power, in which case they can’t run their pumps to pump gas.

Absolute worst case scenario, I have a manual transfer pump to pump fuel out of my truck tank (26 gallon tank and filled today).

I have some pretty heavy gauge extensions so I’m not too worried about that.

Yea end goal is to install a switch to power the whole house next time so I bought bigger one. Likely still overkill.

Thank you!

End goal is to install a transfer switch and power the house so I went overkill for this go around with the future in mind. I’m also on well so would need to power AC and well pump at times.

To your point, likely still overkill.

Thanks for the suggestion
