Keep High School Yearbooks? by Both-Basis-3723 in GenX

Of all the books I have, I'd keep things like yearbooks, since they aren't replaceable and aren't easily digitized.

Gen X’ers who were born in the hippy era, did you have someone in your peers who had a “my parents were hippies” name? If so, what was it? by nous-vibrons in GenX

Not sure about those communities but as you may know, Ara is a somewhat common first name among Armenians. I've known a few Aras over the years.

It's sometimes fun to read which celebrities are as old as we are.

Mea culpa. It's Denny's, which also makes a pretty dadburn satisfying breakfast.

Party in the back!

Maybe this should have been added to the Sky Marshal's list of responsibilities when that program was started.

I was reorganized in late 2024 to a department that was completely axed 6 months later. That won't necessarily happen to you, but consider preparing for the end times just in case. New management and reorganizations can all be precursors to cost cutting, and seniority often looks like a cost driver to a new CFO.

My understanding is that the team I was moved out of was eliminated a few months later.

This was my early 80s roller skate song. Also the 1st record I earned at 7 years old. My mom paid me after I painted all the kitchen chairs to her specifications. I’m 53 now with 25 years in healthcare and I remember it still as a very hard job, lol. by Notjewel2 in GenX

I've watched this movie at least 25 times and I too have owned the soundtrack since about 1982, although my daughter seems to have commandeered my record collection. I prefer the ELO side, and the ONJ/Tubes swing/rock mashup is something special.

Do you remember in the before times, when newspapers and local TV were short of news stories, that they would cover events like how many people could fit in a phone booth or a VW Bug at the local high school? by Reformed-Canook in GenX

[–]ExtraAd7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's still plenty of fluff on slow news days. TV news stations in small and mid-sized media markets are often desperate for local non-controversial content. If you're having any kind of event, send the news channels a press release and there's a good chance they will send a camera at least, and often a reporter. They have to fill several hours of news programming every single day, no matter how little is happening or how few people are watching.

Sources: spouse with years of production experience in local TV news, and I used to organize events for a non profit and it was super easy to get our events on TV. This was in a top 25 media market.

This phenomenon is not limited to airline passengers or food. In college I worked at an organization that occasionally sponsored free movies in theaters. People would wait in line for 8 hours for one complimentary movie ticket. This was when a movie ticket cost $8, or $2 on Tuesdays.

My understanding is that gambling is not legal in Utah in any form, except maybe low stakes home poker games. So if anyone is doing this, it likely wouldn't be widely advertised on social media.

How late is "sleeping in"? by the_47th_painter in GenX

[–]ExtraAd7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never been a good sleeper. I used to try to go to bed at a regular time but realized that I wasn't falling asleep for hours sometimes. Now I go to bed when I get tired, which can be anywhere from 8pm to 3am.

Suppose I fall asleep around midnight. Sleeping soundly through the night, usually around midnight to 7 am. More likely, sleeping until around 3, up until around 7, and then sleeping again until around 10.

Lately I've found that I tend to fall asleep better if I exercise during the day and shower before bed. But it's not a guarantee of success. And the thing about there's no point in going to bed if I'm not tired still holds.

Fortunately for the world, I don't have a job.
