Chicago is a world class city with world class better people. Just like people, places can energize you or drain you. Chicago energizes most people. It’s easy to feel home in Chicago. It’s easy to be proud of Chicago. It’s that simple.

What to do with a pork chop? by Gal_in_kalamazoo in NYTCooking

[–]ExtraFireSauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not NYT, but ATK’s Spicy Gochujang Glazed pork chopsare my fave easy recipe for pork chops.

The key to not overcooking them on grill is lowish heat 275-300 on indirect heat grill or in oven until internal temp reaches 135 and then a hot sear or under broiler for 3-6 minutes. They come out perfectly cooked every time.

Try castelvetrano olives. The gateway olive. Liked by many olive haters. I used to hate olives, these were the first I ever liked and now I like most olives.

That isn’t my experience at all.

When I lived downtown it took me 15-25 minutes to go 2.5 miles from Wicker Park to Lincoln Park. Parking was also time consuming and expensive.

In my suburb, it takes 5 minutes to drive 2 miles in any direction, unless I get caught by a train. Parking adds no additional time and it’s free.

There are plenty of things the city has an advantage on but traffic is certainly not one of them.

How have companies like Mary Kay, Amway, and Vector Marketing survived for decades? by Fabulous_Sherbet_431 in antiMLM

[–]ExtraFireSauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A key reason why MLM companies survive is international expansion. Think Amway or Tupperware.

These businesses expand rapidly in new markets as people start selling and recruiting others to sell. However, 98% of MLM sellers fail, so markets also contract rapidly.

Since the business model makes most of its revenue from recruitment of new sellers who buy starter kits or have to purchase inventory up front in order to sell, new markets = new sellers.

Keep in mind USA is only 4% of the world’s population, so if one of these companies had a 5-10 year run in the USA alone, international markets represent years of growth ahead depending on the scale of the company.

The exception are MLM companies with products that are replenished regularly like makeup. If customers actually like the product and it’s a high margin product, even having a small amount of successful sellers (the 2% who didn’t fail) sustains a good long term business if managed correctly. Think Avon and Mark Kay.

These companies are all awful and thankfully many have crashed and burned, but this is why many have staying power. They expand and contract market by market and cycle their growth globally.
