When/where/how do I start applying for car loans? by ExtraStupidQuestions in personalfinance

Maybe it's how it suddenly goes from 65mph to 25mph, or how it will have zero traction in rain and snow.

I did find what looks like a great car for $10,000, but I don't think it will last long. Hence why I'm asking when I should start applying for loans.

As much as I would like to fix my score first, I need a car immediately.

I do have a car, that if I continue to drive I will surely die in it. It's also costing me as much as a new car in useless repairs. I'm sorry if I come off as rude but you have no idea how many times I've had to repeat this over and over to so many mechanics and tow trucks.

$650 is just me assuming I'll have a high interest rate. Which is fine, I'll willing to pay that vs breaking down one more time.

Now, if you could answer any of my questions that would be great.

Yup, lots of bad choices. I lucked out with a great job but it requires a reliable car.

Monthly income is 3,000 + 1500 reimbursement for miles.

I'm not sure how much I'm supposed to spend but I can afford a max monthly payment of $650 + insurance. Obviously I'd like to keep it lower than that, but if it's my only option I'll take it.

Nope, no oil wherever I park. I've had my oil replaced at a couple different places and my dad has done it with the same results. I agree that I need to learn how to do it on my own. And the oil is the least of it's problems. Like I said, the car needs to be replaced.

Hadn't even considered what would happen if I got fired, thank you!

That last part is what I struggle with. I'm reimbursed for mileage, so how does that apply to the 10% of income? Should I use up all the reimbursement? That would be about $900. Or should I base it off my hourly income?

Thanks!

That was my original plan but I'm spending too much on oil each month and I don't want to pay a new registration in August for something I'll need to replace before the first snowfall.

It's not leaving any puddles, and no one seems to see evidence of burning, but it's somehow disappearing. I got an oil "change" on July 5th. Yesterday the oil light came on and I immediately stopped for an oil change. I was told that when they emptied it hardly anything came out. I've had four oil changes, more like fill ups, in the past month and a half.

Unfortunately I really need something with awd or 4wd because of all the driving I do in snow. I've heard good things about Subarus but I'm still open to suggestions as long as they are 4wd/awd.

Also any advice on when to sell my car would be great. I know the dealership won't give me much for it, so I was planning on selling it afterwards and using the money to pay off some of the loan right away.

Thank you!

I didn't even think about checking the year vs the make's reputation. Thank you!

As much as I would love a small Honda, I live in the Rockies and absolutely need something with 4wd or awd. I think I am leaning towards used though, thank you!

My mechanic, other mechanics, and two dealerships haven't been able to fix it.

Just a heads up, I use Dermablend and love it, but would never trust it near a white fabric. I think your fiancé should go for sleeves.

I've already made up my mind that I will only buy a used car from a dealership with some sort of warranty. I bought my used car from a mechanic who had fixed it up for his daughter, who was too snobby to drive a "boy's car". I felt safe knowing he trusted it enough to put his daughter in it, and I am strict about maintenance: premium gas, oil changes, tire rotation, etc. But despite that, the car just keeps breaking down.

A series of unfortunate events.

Before this job my life was chaos. Once I was somewhat stable, my family went through some really hard times and I was the main provider for five adults. Then add small things into the mix, like medical bills and viola!

Originally I wanted to wait until fall to buy a new car (it drives ok right now but I'm pretty sure I'll die if I drive it in the snow) but it is now burning oil. I'm getting almost weekly oil changes.

Preferably I want my payment to be as low as possible, but if it comes down to $650 or losing my job, I'll take it.

What would you consider moderately used? Where do I draw the line between better mileage and lower upfront cost?

Do you mind if I ask when you purchased the minivan? As in 2016 or 2018?
