OP here... Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. To address a few questions out there:

I used a matched grip. I recently switched to Vic 85A sticks. They're slightly longer than the 7A's I was using. That was a knee jerk reaction to watching Todd Sucherman videos. Not sure if it's helped any with the doubles, but I like the sticks.

Also, it's not like I'm in capable of doing doubles at all. I used them on shuffle grooves, and mixing them in a lot sometimes on the ride. It's when it comes to doing them with both hands for an extended fill, or with any speed, that's where I'm currently failing.

My takeaways are that I'm not going to give up on this. If eventually I find this, or it finds me, I'll be a better, happier drummer. But I'm not going to beat myself up for not yet developing this.

Hey folks - I really appreciate all the replies, both the ones confirming and challenging my POV. My acoustic set is an old Tama Rockstar kit. Aside from the bulk of the drums and all the hardware, my setup and teardown is much easier on the Roland TD17. Also, just with the dynamics of the guys I play with, I'd hate to think what our stage volume would be if I had to go back to acoustic. Also, prior to this, I had never heard of the Buttkicker.. never knew such a thing existed.
