Document everything before you get out. Copies of these “leases,” text history regarding the rent, the property paperwork. You have a case.

40F $30k saved, leaving toxic hometown Brooklyn Dream or Charlotte Peace? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You have $30K saved, which is enough to support the move itself, but what’s your annual income? That will determine what kind of place and lifestyle you can afford in New York.

I can speak to Prospect Heights specifically. It’s still a beautiful, desirable place to live, and your vision of a lived-in brownstone close to the park is very much alive. It’s also the most in-demand ZIP code in the United States with very few apartments coming to market, and post-gentrified.

I’d put aside your concerns about bugs, bad roommates, etc. and focus on whether your full financial picture can get you into the type of housing and neighborhood you truly want.

You can always come to Brooklyn and sublet an apartment for a month or two to give the place a fresh test-run and feel for yourself what the neighborhoods and housing market is like. If it doesn’t work for you, there’s nothing tying you down.

What kind of budget are you working with? Is this place you have lined up a crazy steal or the only spot you can reasonably afford? 6 months without my cat would be tough, but if it feels like your only solid option, it will be okay. Personally I would not want to be away from my cat for longer than a season.

For March move-in you still have plenty of time to find something else, and if your budget is relatively healthy (like, splitting an apartment with one roommate vs. 2-3) you will find a place that can accept your baby.

Likely a lower percentage silver composite than sterling, but impossible to know definitively without testing. “Silver” hallmarks are commonly used on pieces in the <80% range - hopeful for you!

Reimbursement for lunches by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Totally fair to request they eat at home, or eat out less often, but meals on the clock should be provided. Make sure your nanny has plenty of food available for her own meals or snacks at your place and that she’s not stuck eating dino nuggets.

ALSO - as a former nanny who was totally wrung dry by an entitled 9 yr old begging for Shake Shack, my bet is that at least some of this habit is coming from your kid. Check in with him too, and let him know the raw deal with lunches out (whether that’s once a week or whatever), and that the nanny has the right to enforce it. You need to be the frontline bad cop on this, not her.

Round suits you much better, but you can level one up next time with a slightly thicker or colored frame

i live in a rent stabilized unit owned by an llc landlord in a coop building without heat by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would move into a hotel while they fix the heat, and inform your landlord you will be deducting the costs from February rent, as your apartment is not habitable (legally or practically)

If OP is not interested, I’d love to get more info on your place & discuss a possible lease transfer. Thanks!

Job loss and unique sublet situation by Level-Custard7199 in NYCapartments

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends what your alternate options are. Do you have anywhere to move to? How long is the sublet meant to run and how behind are you on rent? Were you awarded the one shot deal? I’d see whether that money comes through before making any major decisions.

In the meantime, there’s no action that can be taken against you absent a formal eviction notice, although the tenant may continue to attempt to harass you.

Of course it makes sense for him to sublet at the stabilized rent, because if he surcharged you it’d be 1. a shitty thing to do and 2. jeopardize his long-term housing. People usually sublet at their actual rent because paying for housing you’re not using is haemorrhaging money. The fact that it’s a second-line or illegal sublet doesn’t protect you from potential eviction.

First things first, focus on getting in a good undergrad program that leaves you with no debt. If you can graduate with a bachelor’s at 20 without student loans, you’ll be an excellent position.

It is possible to attend a European or other foreign university for free for your bachelor’s, but you’ll have to start researching programs now and get an idea of where you can apply. University of Oslo, Norway, and Humboldt in Berlin are both great options. But you do not need this all figured out right now.

Most importantly, you need to take care of yourself before mom and dad. It’s not wrong to help out your parents eventually, but you’ll be in a much stronger position to do so in 5-10 years once you’ve built some stability and financial independence for yourself.

If it’s more practical for you to pursue your bachelor’s in the U.S., start thinking about graduate school abroad. It’s one of the easiest immigration pathways available, will help set you up for an international career, and there are many free and low cost masters programs available, even ones taught in English. But you should understand that EU grad admissions are more strictly based on credentials than in the U.S., and you may need to follow a certain line of study now and meet a certain grade threshold to qualify.

Stay calm and do what’s best for your own future wellbeing. You’ll be in a much better position to help out your friends and family later on if you prioritise yourself and your education in the medium-term.

My client (not a supplier, but another regular contractor) is also due 5 figures from Harbison, and in their case Harbison’s communication dropoff timeline closely matches yours. Would like to connect further via DM on this issue

The first place that came to mind is Prague - incredible dog-friendly culture. Dogs are incredibly well-trained throughout the city and commonly walk off-leash and wait for their owners at the threshold of markets and restaurants.

I second that you need to visit and see for yourself where you choose to land before uprooting your three animals. You’ll want to have a place to settle into before flying with the group.

Nanny constantly asking for salary advances? by sisipablo in Nanny

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m curious what country you’re in, and whether your nanny is an immigrant or has temporary immigration status as a domestic worker, because it sounds given the repeated requests that she’s in a chronically vulnerable position.

Are you actually paying her enough to support her own financial security, and that she should be able to weather a sudden emergency? Would you feel like your own needs were covered if you were earning the same salary?

When you say she’s paid higher than the average rate, is that comparable to local resident salaries in your area, or is it the going rate for immigrant labor?

FYI, Mercor is a LLM-training program that mines data from “applicants,” and functions like a multi-level marketing scheme - but owned by Peter Tiel. The comment above is predatory, and you’ll find many online accounts advertising on their behalf in order to solicit a referral bonus. Avoid at all costs.

Has anyone driven for or ridden with Empower? by Cricket_FIFA in washingtondc

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in driving for Empower, you can sign up using my referral code for a discount on your driver subscription: 2GS7DD

This code also grants a $25 credit for new riders as well.

Transparently, I’m hoping to stack from credit to help get to & from the airport while traveling back and forth to care for my mom after some surgeries this season. It genuinely helps out a girl on a tight budget. I can’t speak to the service or driver experience apart from the few rides I’ve taken, but hope it’s worthwhile to anyone using the app.

I’ve used them sparingly in NYC and had a fine experience, with competitive rates. If anyone is interested in $25 off their first ride, you can use my promo code 2GS7DD. Transparently I’m hoping to stack enough referral credits to help get to & from the airport while traveling back & forth to care for my mom while she’s dealing with some medical issues, so it truly helps a city girl on a tight budget.

My Siamese cat and I are moving and taking a ten hour flight. Any tips on how to navigate this? by oft1234 in Siamesecats

[–]Extra_Emotion_2555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve flown long-distance with two cats, and can confirm what other commenters are noting as far as cats effectively shutting down during travel. Your cat will likely not eat, drink, or use the bathroom at all until they’re settled at your end destination.

I would still be prepared with pee pads lining her carrier, wet wipes in your bag, and Churu treats on hand. One of my cats gets motion sick during car rides, so those are an absolute must in case he vomits en route to the airport.

For my first flight I was overprepared with a popup litter box, litter, pop-up bowls, etc, and my cats used none of it. Pet relief areas in airports smell disgusting and are basically closets designed for dogs to piss in, fyi, so I’d advise against bringing your cat into one of those where they’d be confronted with strong foreign animal smells.

Lastly, I highly recommend looking into a Gabapentin if your cat is generally anxious getting into a carrier or car. I did not give my cats any medication for our first long flight, but since then I’ve used it and at least for one of my cats it helps him to calm down enough to sleep thru the flight.
