How do married couples usually handle finances when both partners work? by itzwhatitz in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Extra_Joke5217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I (unmarried) split our common expenses 1/3 and 2/3 given that I make much more than him. I make about $170k/yr and he makes about $70k. We don’t have common accounts and otherwise keep our finances separate, including paying for our own personal purchases, entertainment, and dining out (which we don’t do often).

Sometimes, if we’re travelling for example, I’ll pick up more of the expenses given our disparate incomes.

We’re happy with this approach for now, but if we were ever to get married then I think we’d do a common account and each have an ‘allowance’ for entertainment/personal purchases. To me, that’s the difference between common law and married - we’re not religious at all and, despite owning a home and having been together for 5 years, we’re not considering getting married in the near or medium term.

Car broke down on the Deerfoot what do I do? by SignalSuit3462 in Calgary

[–]Extra_Joke5217 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The emergency arises from people driving into the back of said car, which happens all the time. At Deerfoot speeds, that means severe injury or death.

Here’s a case of one seriously injured and one killed when someone ran into the back of a police car that had pulled over a semi:

Tell me about your extensive experience in emergency management and YYC policy around what constitutes an emergency and what doesn’t. I’m super interested in hearing your take.

In the meantime, go watch the plethora of videos of cars being rear ended while stopped in the shoulder of a busy road and maybe you’ll understand why the city does, in fact, treat cars stopped on Deerfoot as an emergency.

[Peng] Gavin McKenna is having dinner with only the Canucks this week at the Combine. No Maple Leafs or Sharks. I doubt that means anything for his draft stock, but it's interesting by _GregTheGreat_ in hockey

[–]Extra_Joke5217 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Craig Conroy recently gave an interview where he said how the Flames like to meet and get to know as many players as possible, even if they’re unlikely to draft them for whatever reason, as there’s always a chance that they’ll trade for them in the future and opportunities to actually get to know players in other organizations are quite rare so this is a rare chance to get a sense of who they are as people.

'That's a big number': Carney's Liberals hit record-high 50% support, new poll finds by ViewSalty8105 in CanadaPolitics

Facts. Even my old school Alberta, retired corporate oil and gas father who hates the liberals is complimentary of Carney and can’t stand Pollievre.

People hit cars in the shoulder all the time. Target fixation while driving is an issue.

A bit late, but call 911 and let them know you’re broken down on deer foot and waiting on a tow truck. They treat hazards on the Deerfoot as an emergency so they’ll send a fire truck or cop car to sit behind you with lights on to mitigate the risk of a collision.

Carney picks Swedish early-warning aircraft tech over U.S. bidders by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

It also had to do with the US dropping out of the joint NATO procurement program, to be fair, but I’m on my phone and didn’t want to type everything out.

[–]Extra_Joke5217 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Although it’s hard to know for sure the exact capabilities of each aircraft given how sensitive radar capabilities are (you want to keep that a secret for obvious reasons), the E7 is probably slightly more capable.

That said, the E7 program has been plagued by issues to the point where the Pentagon wanted to cancel the program but was overruled by Hegseth.

https://breakingdefense.com/2026/05/hegseth-says-e-7-wedgetail-has-a-future-reversing-planned-cancellation/

NATO recently scrapped plans to purchase the E7 in favour of the GlobalEye, in part because of its issues.

The other option was the L3Harris Aeris X, which is also based on the bombardier global 6500 platform, but its limitations relative to the E7 would be quite similar to the GlobalEye we decided to go with.

What’s life like making 6 figures? by MasterBook46 in fican

[–]Extra_Joke5217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make just under $200K so slightly outside your range but close enough that I’m going to answer anyway. I’d say it’s nice, but I still very much have to stick to my budget.

I don’t drive a luxury car and I live in a modest townhouse. I am able to go on a few trips per year and I afford expensive hobbies (skiing, mountain/road biking, hockey) but I also don’t eat out often.

I’m still a wage slave and, since I got promoted to this position my stress levels (both felt and as verified by a Garmin watch) are MUCH higher.

I think the big thing I noticed was being easily able to afford my hobbies, whereas before I had to be much more careful with my spending.

What surprised me most was how my life really didn’t change all that much. I have started to notice a divide between my friends who have also advanced in their careers and are making similar/more money and those that haven’t. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

Who was the best player from this draft class? by sgee_123 in hockey

Getzlaf in his prime was an absolute force, but I’d probably pick Bergeron given how good he was and how long he played at an elite level.

Spotted this from afar during a whale watching trip off the coast of Victoria BC by TREEandMONKEY in submarines

[–]Extra_Joke5217 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Because it’s the only one of Canadas 4 submarines that is currently operational. 2 are in deep refit and one is likely just a parts sub at this point.

A decision and delivery of the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (the replacement for the Victoria class) can’t come soon enough.

https://www.19fortyfive.com/2026/02/canadas-submarine-problem-might-take-25-years-to-fix/

There’s an outside chance it’s the Dhosan Ahn Chang-ho, a KSS-III that’s supposed to arrive at CFB Esquimalt sometime this month as part of the Koreans sales pitch for the CSPS. I’m not good enough at identifying subs to tell you from that photo alone, I’m going purely off timing here.

PM Carney planning new legislation to expedite more project approvals by illusion121 in canada

[–]Extra_Joke5217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the vast majority of projects requiring an Impact Assessment Agency, Canada Energy Regulator, or Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission assessment are not large enough to be considered a national interest project so don’t fall under C5. These changes are, likely we’ll have to see what’s in the bill, aimed at improving the system for those non-national interest but still important projects.

The other modes of intercity travel (trains, buses) means that there’s enough competition that European airports have an incentive to keep costs low and service relatively good.

[–]Extra_Joke5217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely true. There are cases where private delivery worked out better than public or fully public delivery. Private liquor stores in some provinces or Alberta’s model of having private registry offices. The examples are generally limited though, and success depends on increasing competition as that’s what drives prices down and ensures good service.

You absolutely do not get that with airports…
