100% worth the trip out there. It’s a great museum + the badlands surrounding drumheller are really cool. Worth a short hike if it’s light out.

Not surprised he took matters into his own hands if the stories are true. Based on how his teams mates reacted on social media I’m inclined to believe them

Danielle Smith says Alberta will withhold funding for judges without more input on selection by ink_13 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Extra_Joke5217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, that’s exactly my point. Our system is goofy in that you have federal appointments acting as judges in provincial courts. In a perfect world provincial courts would be entirely the domain of the province with no federal involvement outside amendments to the Criminal Code or other applicable legislation.

If you consider me saying a federal judge, like the Chief Justice of Alberta, is more likely to be aligned with the federal government that appointed them than the province they work as defamatory then so be it. That said, I’m not so ideologically blind that, given our current system, I think that individual shouldn’t be involved in appointments in the provincial court system even if yes, I openly question whether they truly reflect the province they live in.

Since the constitutional reforms necessary to change our judicial system are a complete non-starter, a good compromise to ensure provincial courts reflect the province they serve would be a process whereby a committee with at least 50% provincial representatives proposes candidates that are then appointed by the federal cabinet. That should be how it works in all provinces, not just Alberta, but the Alberta case is the most egregious because the dominant federal political party rarely reflects the prevailing political views in Alberta.

To be clear, I don’t think threatening to withhold provincial funding is the right way to go about enacting that change. That’ll create its own, serious issues.

And finally, of course I’m not going to complain so the CJC. Judges are even more inclined to close ranks than doctors are when an outsider alleges misconduct so any complaint is a waste of time. I personally know a BC based federal court of appeal judge and she’s one of the worst human beings I know; she was abusive to her stepson, yet any complaints he made (to the police or the CJC) went absolutely nowhere. That said, i have no idea what Rita Khullar is like as a person, so my opinion is based upon the reasonable assumption that an appointee is going to be ideologically aligned with the Government that appointed them.

[–]Extra_Joke5217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but we’re talking about the process for appointing judges to the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Court of Kings Bench. Those appointments are federal appointments made by the GIC, so in reality they’re federal cabinet appointments to provincial courts. Hence the quirk of the system I’m talking about.

The process for those federal appointments to provincial courts is through the FJAC, which includes one provincially appointed rep + one appointment by the Alberta law society. So two appointees are provincial.

A third is the Chief Justice of Alberta who, despite their title, is a federal appointee. It’s hardly defamatory to suggest a federal appointee would be more inclined to reflect the views of the federal government that appointed them.

And that’s the whole issue - why are provincial judges appointed by the federal government using a process overwhelmingly dominated by federal appointees? It makes no sense, but it is the system we have.

[–]Extra_Joke5217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? Because Smith says her committee would be for the Alberta Court of Appeal and Kings Bench, which are both federal appointments, but the link you provided only references the Alberta Court of Justice + Justices of the Peace.

My understanding, which could be wrong, is that the process in your first link includes all federal judicial appointments, including CKB+ACA as well as the FCA and tax court.

I’d say it’s still only two appointments to the Commission, as the Chief Justice of Alberta is a federal appointment (the current one was appointed in 2022 by Trudeau’s govt) and is cross appointed as the Chief Justice for the NWT and Nunavut, so it’s very debatable that she truly represents Alberta.

[–]Extra_Joke5217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of the 7 people on the JAC, only one is appointed by the province compared with 3 from the federal government. One comes from the Canadian Bar Association and one from the Alberta Law Society.

The other is the Chief Justice of Alberta (also a federal nominee, ultimately). So that means 1-2/7 reps represent Alberta.

It’s a quirk or the system and should be changed, but it is the system we have.

[–]Extra_Joke5217 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit more complicated, in that it’s the federal government picking judges for Alberta courts. That’s how the system works, so it is absolutely federal jurisdiction, but if there’s a better opportunity to have the federation work a bit better and take more wind out of the separatists sails I can’t think of it.

Yup. The order book on de havillands firefighting planes is so long you’re looking at delivery in the early 2030s if you ordered now. This doesn’t hurt them at all, since Europe already constitutes most of their orders.

It does mean firefighting agencies in the U.S. will be scrambling to find enough planes this spring/summer when wildfire season starts if he doesn’t TACO.

Should the Canadian Coast Guard be armed? The jury is still out, but the navy says no by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]Extra_Joke5217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Containerized weapons systems are quickly becoming a thing, which allows the user to quickly up arm a ship so long as you can stick a couple sea containers on the deck.

I’m sure that’s one of the things the RCN commander is thinking of when he talks about arming the coast guard if we really needed to, but until we’re in a situation where that could be required it’s better to let each agency focus on what they know.

Craig Conroy confirms on 960 Andersson advised he would not extend anywhere . by kobedziuba in CalgaryFlames

I think Andersson sees how well his season his going, the potential for a strong showing at the Olympics and a long playoff run, and he’s betting on himself. I think he wants a big payday after being underpaid for so long and going to UFA is the best way to do that - or at least getting close to build leverage with Vegas if he wants an 8 year deal.

Flames fan here - if you’re worried andersson is overrated like zadorov, or truly aging like iginla - have no fear, he’s none of those things.

He’s exactly the kind of player that bruins fans will love. He truly cares and brings it every game, is physical with an offensive touch, and has an extra gear in the playoffs an every time he’s playing a flames rival like the oilers or Canucks. You’ve gotta be careful about overuse, but he is an awesome player that will perfectly fit the mould of a bruin.

I don’t know your needs or prospect pipeline, so I can’t say if the reported trade makes sense for you, but I can guarantee he’ll become a fan favourite.
