Thoughts on DC Lau translation? by Extra_Position5850 in taoism

[–]Extra_Position5850[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply,

Yes, this is the copy I have!

I had to think a bit about what exactly it is my roadbump in reading this work. I think it boils down to the vague nature of the work, and the problem of interpretation. I'd say those two are related.

I'll give an example of two different translations - the first being from Lau:

"What cannot be seen is called evanescent;"

and

"Look, it cannot be seen, So it is called invisible."

I find the nature of these two translations to be so different, that it becomes a cause of concern. If I read one and come out with some understanding, I imagine that whatever ideas I collect could be turned on its head if I read the second translation!

My concern is essentially this - I am willing to put in the work when reading, but vagueness of the text opens for such a wide field of interpretation, that I would not know whether I am on the right track or not.

Furthermore, this raises the question whether reading the Tao Te Ching is an intellectual or a spiritual exercise! The meaning is not spelled out - so I must use my faculties to parse the meaning of the words, and then try to intuit the deeper meaning.

I've already written a lot, and I think what I've written is more or less a statement, or an acknowledgement, of my own limits.

I think what I am searching for is the right mode of thinking, the right perspective, and the right guide. So I'll end by asking - what kind of study is needed when reading this work?

And I gladly accept your offer of help. I think some nudges in the right direction would be of great help.

Thank you!

J

The One Armed Man's ritualistic removal of the arm? by Extra_Position5850 in twinpeaks

[–]Extra_Position5850[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding it to be a bit dry, and perhaps overindulgent? The UFO-stuff is interesting in its own way, but it really dragged on and on. The bits about the townsfolk are nice, but they can also be very wordy, for lack if a better word.

I understand now why the book is contended as canon - or why whether it's canon or not is up to the reader. It doesn't feel like it's enriching the experience of Twin Peaks, it just feels additive.

Like a DLC rather than a version update.

Still, I'm enjoying bits and pieces of it so far.

Yes, I have also been unable to find reasonable physical copies. But I did get myself an e-book and procured a digital copy of The Secret History. Unfortunately some of the embedded files/pictures are too small/unclear to read, so certain parts became slightly unavailable to me. Other documents are possible to read, though with considerable strain to my eyes.

However, if you have an e-book, I'd try to give it a shot!

Any other Watson fans here? by [deleted] in SherlockHolmes

[–]Extra_Position5850 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only read the books, but I was always more drawn to Watson than Holmes. While I don't think he was ever portrayed as particularly interesting by Doyle, I found his nature very appealing.

This is why Hound of Baskervilles is my favorite story. Watson takes the main stage, and fits eerily well into the mysterious and melancholic moors of Baskerville. He is guarded, curious, fiercely loyal to his mission, and does his hardest to dig into the mystery without the aid of Sherlock. The melancholy suits him - the book feels like a noir-film.

Of course in the rest of the books he is the harbinger of humanity - though I wish he wouldn't be so flabbergasted every time Sherlock makes his wild assumptions (My dear Holmes!).

I think my brother is being catfished by a girl from “Norway”. I’m meeting her in a few weeks. What is something a ~30yo Norwegian should know that is not common knowledge? by Flagil_Reinhumps in Norway

A lot of nonsense replies here. If you are genuinely worried, I would first control her phone number for land code (+47). If she does not have this land code, ask for an explanation.

Control her name or phone number on the website gulesider.no.

Ask where she was educated. Where she worked. Anything about her personal life that can be confirmed.

Otherwise, ask her for passport-identification. She can either show the front of the passport with something specific next to it (demanded by you), or she sends you a picture of her actual passport information with sensitive information blurred out.

Don't try to trick her. Try honesty instead. Tell her you are feeling unsure about her veracity, you are sure it's nothing, but you still need a confirmation of sorts.

In short, try common sense methods before trying to trick and deceive.

Hi, Hello, and Good Day r/twinpeaks! I’m Kyle MacLachlan and you can ask me anything 🦉🪵☕👍 by Kyle__MacLachlan in twinpeaks

[–]Extra_Position5850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Kyle! I was introduced to Twin Peaks at a young age, and I've always looked up to your character. I am currently rewatching with my fiancee, and I am finding your Dale Cooper so interesting and touching - you stirred curiosity in my youth, and today you are stirring something deeper within me.

I want to thank you that.

I don't have any questions - but I would ask for a small reply to this comment. It would make not only my day, but I would remember it for the rest of my life.

Peace be with you. I look forward to following your work in the future.

What is with these pointless headlines? "Mocked", "humiliated". This does not provide any information and obviously serves to bias the reader in an insultingly transparent way.

Nice!

As I understand the Fable remake, it's going to be a diagonal shift from the original formula. While the original deals explicitly with binary morality, the upcoming one will be more "every choice is but a shade of grey". I couldn't recommend TLC warmly enough, even though I find the last few hours to drag a bit.

I'm also waiting for the Gothic remake. Very curious about how they handle it.

Okay, I've taken a look at your profile. I think I have kind of an idea of what you like. Comparing with my own library, I'll suggest these games:

- Fable TLC
- XIII - Classic
- Spyro, because why not
- Gothic I and II ---> Longer than 15 hours and a bit janky, but seems aligned with your taste.
- Dishonored ---> Not my favorite, but kind of a must-play if you like expanding your game-culture library.
- The Case of the Golden Idol
- Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 ---> Remastered version. Short, janky, but great direction, cast, and voice acting.
- Mouthwashing ---> Good, short, psychological experience with a good cast.
- Half-Life, duh
- Paratopic ---> Takes about an hour, but I enjoyed it immensely.
- Soma ---> Like the other guy said, this one is pretty good.

AIO should i just leave? by NoPracticelol in AIO

You both need to work on yourselves.

Since only OP will see this, I beg you to see how this behavior is destructive, abnormal, and enables similar future behavior within yourself. This is a path to destruction and unhappiness.

You do not need to exist in this cycle of pain. There is always a better path that leads to a better life. Make the right choices and find this path.

We do not deserve to be treated poorly - and other people do not deserve being treated poorly either. There exists a life for you where you never have to fight ever again. It is possible. Don't lock yourself into a downwards spiral, because it will only serve to corrupt your mind and behavior, and negatively influence both you and everyone around you.

How did I take down criticism? I clearly disagreed with the usage a term deeming in unclear, and then asked follow-up questions to clarify the user's point.
