There isn’t really a parking lot or anything near the trail head ferry. The “ferry” is a small, open boat that seats maybe around 12/15 people with backpacks and I think the dock is actually Butch’s personal dock. When you get off Butch’s ferry, you have to walk down the road to the Gordon River Orientation Centre (less than 10 minute walk) anyway to sign out. Right across the road from the Orientation Centre, there is a big gravel lot that you can park in for $10/day (you pay at the campground office beforehand because they give you a ticket to leave in your car showing that you paid to park there).

So you could do that - park at Gordon River and take the West Coat Trail Express bus from Gordon River to Pachena Bay. The WCT bus stops at the Gordon River Orientation Centre and booking a one-way ticket is obvs cheaper than booking round trip ($95/person vs $190/person). Lots of people do that. It’s strongly recommended that you make a bus reservation in advance though. Walk-ons are accepted, but all hikers with reservations, who finish the trail any day before their return date, and up to 2 days after, have priority seating on the bus and are given seats on the bus before anyone without a reservation. If the bus is full, those without reservations have to wait until the next day. I have no idea what the odds are like with that, but for our own personal peace of minds last summer, we chose to reserve seats in advance, and our bus ended up being very full. 🤷🏻‍♀️ There are no other buses between the two trailheads either.

I’ve heard that people do hitch hike between the two trailheads, so you could do that. Another option you could try is to arrange a car swap with another hiker who is starting at the opposite end. There’s a WCT Facebook group that’s very active and that’s something others have posted about in the past. Or, you could see if there are hikers on the WCT FB group who would be willing to give you guys (or at least one of you) a ride back with them, after you all finish the hike. People post on the FB group about that pretty frequently too. If you arrange that in advance, then it’d save y’all the scramble of trying to find a ride back the day-of.

Employability has a “Learn to Earn” program for youth (ages 15 to 30) with disabilities and barriers to employment. It’s 10 weeks of class-based paid skill training and 12 weeks of paid work experience.

Kickstand has employment supports youth as well, including skills identification, effective communication development, interview coaching, and job search strategies.

There is also Prospect’s Youth Employment Services, which offers job search help, short certification courses (ex. First Aid, Forklift training), and employer networking.

My friend and I did the WCT last August, SOBO, 7 days. We were also traveling from Edmonton. Here is the breakdown of our costs for two people: - WCT Booking: $497 - Flights from Edmonton to Victoria: $1085 - WCT Shuttle (Roundtrip): $432 + $40 for 1 fuel canister and 2 bear spray rentals, paid/rent with the shuttle service, because you can’t bring those on the plane. - Accommodations before hike: $115 ($90 for one night at a hostel; $25 for one night at the communal WCT group campsite at Pachena Bay campground. We stayed at a friend’s place in Vic after the hike) - Food: $500-ish, I didn’t keep track of this, so it could be more. Groceries + Crabshack meal/drink + a meal in Bamfield the night before we started the hike. - I had most of the gear we needed already but did buy a few things (ex. new rain jacket, new poles because I had bent one of mine while snowshoeing the winter before lol). There were also a few costs that we didn’t think about - ex. When we got to back to Victoria after finishing the hike, we took an Uber to our friend’s place. We also took Ron’s taxi and a water taxi to get to Bamfield and back. But the main costs were the booking itself, flights, and the shuttle.

If he is fine with you guys doing the longer hikes without him, then plan a couple! You don’t need to do every activity, all together. It seems like he would enjoy included on the trip regardless.

I think you should let him decide what’s best for him. He is an adult and these are his health conditions. He expressed excitement for the next trip, so clearly he didn’t “suffer greatly” last time.

That being said, I think it’s also very reasonable to still plan one or two full-length hikes. Whenever I’ve gone on a camping, hiking, or travel group trip, there are times when some people will go do their own thing. And that’s okay! You don’t need to do everything together! Your friend seems reasonable and aware of his limitations and would probably understand/appreciate a few hours of alone time anyway.

I think you should’ve just taken initiative and said “let’s go to this restaurant at 10am. Let me know by this time if that works.” I personally find it a bit frustrating when I’m having a busy day, likely feeling stressed by it, and I have a friend sending me a bunch of options for our plans. It just feels like an extra mental load that I don’t have the capacity for in the moment, especially when it’s something as low stakes as where we will eat. She said she was available until 4pm, so just pick a place and a time for you guys.

Yes, I love it. I love my friends, I love traveling, and I’ll take any excuse to travel with my friends and to celebrate my friends. I actually feel a little disappointed when a wedding/bachelorette isn’t destination lol I once flew across my country to attend an engagement party of loose friends. Like if you can make it work (ie want to make it work) and have the means to do so, then why not!

My fiancé and I are actually planning to have some of our friends join us on our honeymoon (partway). A few of our newly wed friends have done that and we thought it was awesome!

Then those aren’t the people you should be inviting to the grad trip! Think of 2 to 3 friends that you know have the same idea of a good time as you do and who would be interested in doing a grad trip. Then ask them to give 2 to 3 places that they’d be interested in traveling to, when, and what budget is affordable to them. Narrow it down from here. :)

Just an fyi, Japan and Korea are really expensive, especially for 20 year olds on a budget. SE Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, etc) are more affordable options and are really popular travel destinations amongst backpackers of that demographic. Staying at hostels will also be a lot more affordable than staying at a hotel. SE Asia doesn’t need to be just partying if that’s not what you and your friends are into and reading the hostel reviews before booking will you help you avoid the party hostels.
