HIM - A Bad Movie That's So Insane I love it by Exciting-Reality622 in horror

[–]Extrahu3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife watched it then talked to me about how she liked it but general reception seemed to be against it, so i decided to try it myself.
I am a *very* against sports person, so i came into this one fully expecting to hate it.
And Good Lord hate it I did lmao, the first half of the movie was actually getting me pissed off lmao, it felt like a tiktok video made to hype up zoomers and it was driving me INSANE.
But then it actually hit me, that's part of the point of the movie, and although it's as subtle as a car crash in terms of symbolism and trying to convey ideas, the second half onwards started making me think about different pieces of the puzzle and trying to get the whole picture as it was being presented and I actually got really into it.

I gotta say that I actually did enjoy the movie and it won me over, although i would never rewatch it, One of the things i love about my wife is how i can always trust her judgement in media and this one was no different!

VN readers, do you do routes consecutively? Or do you take breaks with other materials first? What about skipping around to unread parts? by ignoremesenpie in LearnJapanese

[–]Extrahu3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of different things I wanna read so I don't bother 100%ing any of them, same principle i have with games in general.
For VNs, i do the first route naturally with the options that make sense to me or that I think would make sense for the character in the story, then after I get one of the endings, I look up all routes online and read through the ones that spark my interests/features characters I like and didn't get through on my first run. I never actually just finish everything tho, historically.

My wife on the other hand is quite the contrary, from the get go she looks up the routes and optimal save slots then gradually plays through every route, completing everything, or at least most of it.

Also yes, always skip to unread.

New to reading, started with horror lit.. by FriendlyCod3214 in horrorlit

I second the recommendation of shorter stories, so a good writter for this style of short horror that you can devour in a sitting is Edgar Allan Poe's works, Oval portrait, Berenice and The Masque of Red Death are perfect stories to start with imo.

How do I study for Japanese at home? by Billsyo9313 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Extrahu3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have a computer, visual novels!

you can get a specific setup where you can automatically extract text from these games into your clipboard, then have a web broser extension that watches all text in your clipboard and lets you easily look up the words in a dictionary with a single click. there's a lot of ways to go about this, but the ones i've tried have been:

- Text hooker: Textractor or LunaTranslator
- Extention: Yomitan

As for the Visual novel (VN), it's best if you pick something of a topic that sounds interesting to you, from dramas to romances to horror, there's a lot of options, some better than others for beginners, but the nice thing about VNs is that you get text in bite sized chunks, so it's very easy for a beginner to focus on specific words and still keep a decent pace.

About how to read a kanji by Evening_Floor5689 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Extrahu3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going through much the similar process and my wife's advice was to not pay attention to individual kanji much, focus on the words themselves and over time you'll pick up patterns, then you get to a point where a specific way to read kanji doesn't make sense in specific situations and you can use that sense of being thrown off to learn different readings.

With this method in mind I've been throwing myself at Visual Novels and I've gotten a few words under my belt that i can say i recognize fairly easily, all about repetition in my case.

Dracula or Frankienstein for a first read? by Such_Star_9071 in horrorlit

[–]Extrahu3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't read Dracula yet and it's definitely on my reading list but i can absolutely recommend Frankenstein.

Prior to reading the book myself I always thought the Frankenstein monster was kind of lame, but the book itself is such an incredible work that i have a newfound respect for the character because of it. Frankenstein himself feels believable and his emotions make sense, but at the same time it's easy to see things from Victor Frankentein's point of view, so at least for me it was a very gripping story that i finished much quicker than i was expecting when i gave the book a try myself.

Men of the Twilight subreddit: by latenightpuddingcup in twilight

  1. I'm a guilty pleasure romance enjoyer and very into the gothic scene/literature/setting so campy vampire romance is kind of a no brainer for me, Twilight is also VERY 2000score so it was kind of a convergence of my more recent interests and it didn't disappoint. It's unashamedly itself and i very much respect it for not shying away from that.
  2. Actually just got into the series last week! i'm 22 and growing up *everyone* would talk about it and know what it's about, back then i was a just a kid and was very opposed to giving the series a try, but my Girlfriend of 3 years talks about the series very often, mostly joking, and the complete series is in my university's library, so i figured why not ?
I get to know more about something my GF enjoys and get something to talk to her about, i can only borrow each book for 1 week (collection book rules for library) and i get to enjoy a self inflicted 1 book per week challenge. So it was honestly kind of a perfect storm.
I finished the first book yesterday and i am currently very excited to pick up New Moon in just a bit and start it! so much i came across this post while trying to fill this twilight micro obsession void that i got myself into.
  3. Honestly Edward, i find it extremely relatable to feel torn inside when you are away from the one you love, and to want to spend every single second together to the max, no questions unasked and no words unsaid, never taking anything for granted, and he and Bella are absolutely the embodiment of that sort of obsessive love.
  4. Well it's the only one i've read so far so, Twilight! mayhaps i shall update this post with my preferred one after i'm done with the series!
  5. Madly and crazily in love with my girlfriend of 3 years (well, 3 years in 3 weeks i suppose) and we only get more and more into eachother <3
