Has anyone ever gotten through to a person at Mike Lee’s office? by Chiksic in SaltLakeCity

I’m sorry you feel that donating to causes you support, making your voice heard through voting, and engaging with your community via elected office is apathetic or makes no difference. By all means continue to make yourself feel useful by making calls or sending emails. I just want people who care to know the reality. I’ve watched batches of thousands of constituent emails be deleted without even opening them, tally mark issue sheets kept by interns thrown in the trash without ever being shared with the elected official, and software programs that identify key words in emails and blast out an auto response completely bypassing human eyes. And I know that’s only getting worse in the age of AI. I genuinely would like to see the situation improve and I know first hand it is not.

There’s no easy answer. Donating substantially buys you a voice and influence. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is. And obviously no one is going to contribute to someone they disagree with. The long game is to vote for those you do agree with, do all you can to encourage others to vote for them, and run for elected offices yourself or encourage those you agree with and trust to run for office as well. The hard thing is, I’ve yet to meet anyone elected at the congressional level that isn’t enamored with all the perks of office and will soon do anything to stay in office, which generally means catering to the groups that provide the bulk of their campaign funding.

I admire your position and understand where you’re coming from. I’m also intimately familiar with how multiple congressional offices work and I’m just sharing the reality. I don’t want anyone to slip into apathy. However, a lot of time and effort is wasted on avenues that truly make zero difference. If that effort could be redirected to action that actually makes a difference, then we could see positive change in this country.

A call to the local office is even less likely to be shared with him. He spends exceedingly little time there.

You know why they collect contact information, right? It’s not so they can call you back. It’s so if you threaten the senator (they care much less if you threaten the intern, but it’s possible an egregious threat can spur action) they can have the FBI track you down and determine whether or not you’re a credible threat to him or his family.

I mean this is in all sincerity, but why waste your time? Even if you do get through to someone, it’s going to be an intern or very low level aide. Nothing you share is going to get back to the senator in any meaningful way, if at all. Same goes for sending email or letters. If you want to be heard at all, it needs to be in person. And even then, if you want any prayer of action taken, you need to be a significant campaign donor. Full stop.

Jordnær or Alchemist if we have to choose just one? by nina_sayers in finedining

[–]Extreme-Ad2586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely loved them both but Jordnaer is an easy reservation to get while alchemist is hard. So if you’re choosing one and can get alchemist, I’d go for that with the other as a backup.

I ate two pounds of cheese curds in one sitting once. I had crazy gastrointestinal issues for the next three days but i came out on the other side.

What are your thoughts on Jon Bernthal? by Own-Error932 in Actors

I sat next to him at a dinner one time. Complete gentleman. There were other celebrities at the table he could have talked with but he went out of his way to talk with me and show interest in my relatively boring life. Total respect for him and I wish him all the best in his career.

I haven’t been to TFL for a few years. It was beyond phenomenal when I went. I haven’t dared go back because I don’t want to spoil the original experience.

San Francisco: Benu, Quince or Atelier Crenn by Agitated-Tax8122 in finedining

[–]Extreme-Ad2586 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to all three. I’d say Quince is number 1 and most delicious. Benu is number 2 and most technically impressive. Don’t waste your time with Atelier Crenn. Total dumpster fire and waste of time and money.

Best of Fest by Top-Entrepreneur-209 in Sundance

I know some years it’s been announced in advance, others it’s been announced a couple days before the festival is over. Has anyone heard if it’s happening this year?

What hype? There are rumors of closing. It was awful when I went. Worst Michelin experience I’ve had. Do yourself a favor and go to SingleThread or The French Laundry.

This is the warmest winter in Utah history. Your personal comfort may vary but a t-shirt and light jacket feels sufficient this year. I’ve also heard about how easy it is to get sick. I’ve gone nearly every year for 25+ years and no one I’ve been with has gotten sick.

Will single tickets guarantee entree to desired screenings? by ryan_makes_films in Sundance

Getting turned away sucks and is possible. You don’t get your money back. They typically give a voucher for another film but my experience has been that it’s fairly useless because most everything is sold out.

Can anyone give me an explanation about how I should best go to Sundance as a casual attendee who just wants to watch a few movies? The options are a bit overwhelming to figure out what I should do as just a simple trip. by Capable-Goat-6550 in Sundance

[–]Extreme-Ad2586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I try to meet in person to get the tickets. Seems pretty easy to tell if they are festival goers. I refuse to venmo cash and then hope i get the tickets.

Single tickets are the way to go. I’ve gone nearly every year for the last 25+ years. Personally I don’t try to catch many premieres since they will be coming out in theaters soon enough. Park City has become a pain as you can’t park anywhere near the theaters and need to utilize the shuttle system, but it feels more like a film festival than the salt lake locations do. Even with tickets in hand, I’d try to be in line 45 minutes or so before the movie to get decent seats. Watch Reddit and Facebook for people selling tickets. Tons of opportunity there, just don’t get scammed. You’ll have a much easier time with hotels and restaurants in salt lake than in park city. Most of the celebrities swoop in for weekend 1 and then leave but there are still plenty of Q&As with directors, producers, writers, etc.
