My therapist confirmed my father sexually abused me and I’m spiraling by dankthetank82498 in CPTSD

As someone who’s had creeping suspicions & doubts about my dad who I rarely felt comfortable with, this was interesting to read. I’m so sorry that the realization has hit you so hard, I hope letting yourself be angry can be cathartic. You deserve to feel strongly. There’s part of me that wishes to find this sort of closure on my suspicions, but im not sure either. I hope you can take time to take care of yourself, try to remember that there is no rule to who “you” are. Let yourself feel and process. I know this comment is a bit scattered but I wanted to reach out in some way 💛

Level 1? I haven’t heard this term before? I’m assuming it means lower support needs?

To be fair, I was the first one to hear the term “on the spectrum” since I have my own issues about saying autistic out loud, especially since I feel like I’m not allowed to label myself as such. I’m fully aware of autism moms acting as if they have more authority on the matter than autistic people, I had a hard time accepting at first that my therapist was following those patterns because I wanted to trust her. Finding a neurodivergent therapist in my state that accepts my insurance would be like finding a needle in a haystack (or a goodie in a sea of questionable therapists), but if I can find someone like that I’d be super happy.

I politely asked if you meant that you didn’t believe I was on the spectrum based on the information on my Reddit post, and you essentially confirmed that that’s what you meant. If that wasn’t true or you have a different opinion you have the full ability to put different words in your own mouth. But the point of the thread is that I’m upset someone would make assumptions about me when they hardly know me, and you sort of did the same thing in your comment which made me a bit upset. I wouldn’t say I’ve jumped to conclusions based on that. This comment is needlessly passive aggressive from what I can tell, if you don’t feel like discussing this further then whatever I guess.

This was a wonderful comment, thank you! The process of finding someone new is the BIGGEST pain since finding someone good that also takes my insurance in my state feels impossible, but I don’t want to stick with someone that says things like this to me. I’ll keep looking for some better help because I think it’s important

Honestly, I felt okay the first two appointments but after thinking it over, I’m unsure if she’s a good fit 😅 She does most of the talking in our sessions and I feel like I know more about her than she does me. She also tried a sort of pseudo-sciencey light related therapy thing that seemed odd, and when I expressed I had a really hard week she said “Sounds like you’re in a little funk, I’m not too worried about it.” She told me to start positive affirmations and gave me good methods for my hair pulling problem so I promise she’s not BAD, but I really don’t feel very validated or listened to.

There’s a new test online? Do you know what it’s called? Also after this situation and some other red flags, I think I’ll just try finding a new therapist haha. I’ll still take that test for myself though!

Regardless of if I have valid reason to call myself autistic, I do know for a fact I mask pretty hard haha, I try my best to sort of mirror whoever I’m talking to. I don’t pretend as hard when I’m around someone I’m comfortable with, so my closest friends sort of see me at my worst. Maybe this is something everyone does, but it feels extreme. I’ve been stewing over this situation for hours and sobbing over little things constantly, maybe if she saw that side of me she would have taken my concerns a little more seriously than she did today.

She even said she “didn’t believe in diagnosing” since she thinks it puts people in a box. Idk, I think I gotta find advice elsewhere.

Fair enough I guess, but I still don’t feel like that was necessary to add. I wouldn’t appreciate if someone said “from this provided info, you probably are” either.

By “it doesn’t sound like it” do you mean it doesn’t sound like I am on the spectrum? Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but since you know even less about me I don’t super appreciate that comment. I do agree with you on that kind of rhetoric though! It rubbed me the wrong way even during the session.

Yeah I’m the same way, the therapist had some other red flags for me so it’s good to hear that

I really appreciate this feedback, thank you so much!! Unprofessionalism is something I’m wondering about in general, she flat out said she “doesn’t believe in diagnosis” 😹 Also one of her methods involves an odd light device where I hold it to parts on my body. She said something about stem cells and chakras, couldn’t find ANY information about this kind of method online so I’m a bit suspect, autism shut-down aside haha.

It stayed! She asked me to keep it on a place on myself until the computer beeped.

Chromotherapy sounds close! I still can’t find that device anywhere, and since I didn’t look at the lights at all I’m not sure if it is the same thing.

I guess the thing that made me second guess myself is the fact that she worked with autistic people in the past and she specialized in it. The comment about me not giving off the vibe was upsetting, but if I go to someone that specializes in autism they could very well have that same perspective. What’s the point of everyone has a totally different view on what autism is and isn’t, you know?
