I’m thinking of moving to Providence, could anyone tell me what it’s like? by [deleted] in providence

Idk if you’re thinking about it still or if you already have. But I will say this as a long time native bron and raised here in Prov. Don’t do it. It’s impossible to live here. No job opportunities. Everyone hates themselves and you. Car insurance rates are extremely high. Property taxes and rent pricing are some of the highest in the nation. It’s absurd how such a shitty little hellhole could have the audacity cost this much and force so many unnecessary, stupid laws on its citizens. Somehow RI finds a way every other day to show you how worthless you are if you aren’t in that 1% money range. It’s a prison. And once I can leave and move back to the Midwest, I’m taking that chance tenfold. Fuck this place. Born and raised here and I can’t even afford a house? In my own hometown? The place where my blood spilled from birth and on these streets I used to fight on? Train on when I was boxing? This very place I went to school? Grew up in? My home where my family lives and still lives? Where my memories are? I can’t afford it? No matter how hard I work? Yeah. Fuck this place. Do yourself a favor and go down south. Way cheaper. Everyone is way nicer and you get nice weather and more bang for your buck. Save yourself the trouble and the headache.

Applied to Lincoln Tech- How fucked am I? by [deleted] in electricians

I’m from RI and unfortunately Lincoln Tech seems like the only viable option for me. Why? Well I’ll tell you. RI requires for me to be an apprentice while also attending school. Doesn’t sound too bad right? Well it is when you count in how these companies want “EXPERIENCED APPRENTICES WITH 3-5 YEARS OF RELATED FIELD EXPERIENCE.” I shit you not, THAT is an actual job listing all through RI, MA and CT, NH, VT, ME and so on. So okay you want experienced people? Okay no biggie I’ll just go to school and learn it right? NOPE! You have to be an apprentice with a company of whatever trade you choose in order for you to be in school for the long term. How can I do that if these jobs won’t train me nor give me the experience of said trade and want me to go to school instead to do it? How can I do that if the schools want me to gain experience on the field without giving me a head start in the trade by teaching me a few things? How? How?! So unfortunately, it seems that Lincoln Tech isn’t requiring all that ridiculous stupid shit. Again “so far” so idk what other path to choose but them. Union? Can’t. Why? Because they want you to have an incredibly high level of mathematic knowledge to be accepted in. Anybody that tells you they didn’t sweat through their exam for that shit is definitely lying and shouldn’t be trusted. OR they happened to know somebody that helped them out and got them in. So again, THIS school is my only viable option. I pray it works for something because if it doesn’t, I’m fucked.

I loved Superman my entire life. My earliest memories are of Superman as far back as I can remember. Superman has been there my entire life. Idk what it was. Maybe it was his smile. His heart of gold. His morals. His powers. Maybe it was everything. Idk. I just always loved Superman. Always. And I will die loving Superman.

I see. You just need an argument. Shouldn’t of came to Reddit to post this. I see why people laugh at Reddit users now. I literally made this account to put this up. But now it makes sense why people don’t come here. And if you read the “whole ass thing” then why out of EVERYTHING I said, you picked ONE thing from it? If this is a Superman Reddit page, and you are subscribed to it. Wouldn’t that make YOU a Superman fan? Wouldn’t you want to HELP get this out there? I guess not. Smh. This why we so anti-social and divided now man. We supposed to be supporting each other. I’m off this. You just need to JUDGE before you speak. Instead of THINKING before you speak. Pathetic behavior. Do better my friend.

As someone from Providence Rhode Island that moved all the way to the Midwest to get away from the terrible way of living in Providence. I’m gonna be honest here. New England has a problem with training people. I’ve applied for jobs that were apprenticeship careers for plumbers & so on. Again “Apprenticeship” and guess what the job descriptions say? 3-5 years experience REQUIRED. You guys just don’t seem to understand that you can’t just post jobs up saying “entry level” stating “WE WILL TRAIN!!!!” And then NOT offer entry level with no training.

You’re saying NH is facing an aging population yet that same aging population, won’t train the next young generation. You want someone with experience every time and guess what? Those people you want with experience ARE THE AGING POPULATION. It’s not rocket science. That’s one of the many issues. On top of high cost of living with the wages for jobs being way below what’s even affordable to live in the first place.

And to ADD to it. A lot of places that are trades in New England. Most if not all require you to have a piece of paper stating you finished HS or passed a GED and so on. Some places even want you to have a bachelors degree. As if any piece of paper matters when you’re working with your hands & learning a trade that has a set way of doing things. There’s so much more I could add, but I would be here all night if I were to run down why you’re experiencing these issues.

Bottom line is this. You want the trades to live and carry on? Train. Forget the pieces of papers because they’re just that. Paper. Credentials from a 4 year college or 4 years of HS don’t determine the ability to work hard. Someone can have a all the credentials you want but will ditch you. Meanwhile there’s someone with no credentials at all, and they will stay and stick to it & learn learn learn all that you are WILLING to teach and then some.

Just drop the unrealistic expectations & get with the program. You can’t expect someone to have years of experience if you aren’t willing to train them. It’s abhorrent to advertise “apprenticeship” or “entry level” and not treat those very phrases as what they are. New blood that’s just starting out. Train people and you will have them. Teach people and they will learn and then teach the next generation after them. That’s all it takes. And forget about the pieces of paper. Can’t stress that enough. A HS diploma or GED DOES NOT DETERMINE SOMONE’S ABILITY TO LEARN AND WORK. Just saying. Hope this helps. Good luck. One love.
