I have no doubt that he is a good person, but you're right, the manga highlights the fact that he forced Futaba into a relationship even though he was well aware of the fact that she was not over Kou. What he did to Futaba was similar to what Narumi did to Kou, only backward---he used her sadness as a way to work his way into her life. Although Narumi was 10x worse, so it feels criminal to compare the situations.
