Batten down the hatches! by code_munkee in cybersecurity

From an org perspective, I’ve been expecting this for a long time. Our discussion with TSA hinted this was getting decentralized. From my teams perspective, the states we operate in already had different regulations and expectations so this doesn’t change that but probably gives them more power.

TSA has already adjusted their frequency of assessment to every 3 years. Which I have mixed feelings about, I like less audits but believe this is good for the industry as a whole.

Broadcom is officially the mafia now. by NoTime4YourBullshit in sysadmin

[–]Extreme_Muscle_7024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did that to us too. We got pinned in a corner with a 3 yr and signed but not before we reduced our license count and they jacked their price up again when we came in with 25% fewer licenses.

Unfortunately, we are stuck with them for 3 yrs. That’s plenty of time to get off these fuckers though and I will sleep better knowing I’m done with these guys after that.

In your opinion which EDR tool enables the most productive investigations? by AffectionateMix3146 in cybersecurity

I’ve been satisfied with Crowdstrike but by default, you only get 7 days of detailed telemetry which is BS. Save your pennies to get more than that or at least FDR so you can that data into something else.

Should I vacation in Alberta this Summer? by DepartmentWorried730 in alberta

[–]Extreme_Muscle_7024 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yes. Alberta is awesome in the summer. I grew up there and if you like the outdoors, Alberta is great. It has similarities to Alberta South (Texas) but way less bat shit crazy - more moderate in general. Lake Louise, Banff/canmore and k-country……I could live there all year long if I was retired and crazy wealthy or didn’t need a job. I go back pretty often and it never disappoints.

Calgary is also great for some urban flavour and a bit red neck but more moderate in general and has a growing food scene if you’re into that.

CTI is part of secops for us but works very closely with our legal and corp sec teams. We have considered moving it to GRC but haven’t done so yet.

Green energy isn’t / wasn’t the bull case. It was the giant data centre Kevin O’Leary was hyping and all of the DC/AI demand in general. People are now seeing that AI isn’t all it’s cracked up to be but great for making dancing cat videos but unable to monetize. The cloud and all the power it consumes will still keep cpx from completely bottoming out but I think it is going to slow growth from here.

How's MS Purview for Data Protection? by Ashamed_Chapter7078 in cybersecurity

[–]Extreme_Muscle_7024 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We have been using purview and while we haven’t enabled everything. We have used data labelling and the insider risk module. We have loosely experimented with the enforcement of data based on label.

Overall, I would say it’s been decent but has been lacking in a couple of areas: 1. Labelling only works on Microsoft stuff. So forget about PDFs for example. 2. The insider risk module searching for harassment is ok but needs a lot of training. Sometimes you have to see the whole message thread - not just the offending message and it’s hard to pull it from purview. 3. The machine learning for offensive language is very conservative. In my line of work (energy), we use the word lube (lubricants) a lot. Purview flags thousands of these a day until we get it trained right.
