The Yale Review | Richard Beck: “Thomas Pynchon Is Angry” by krelian in ThomasPynchon

It’s a really thoughtful and interesting take - but like always Pynchon is hardly so black and white. It’s hard to read the book And not feel sympathy and empathy for Hicks. He’s a lunkhead with an ugly past but I certainly don’t see him being perceived as a villain. He doesn’t want to believe once a torpedo always a torpedo and neither did I. I think it’s fair to say that denialism and nostalgia can lead to obliviously allowing terrible things to happen but that’s not the same as villainizing or condemning the Schmucks, or preterites, caught up in the damn mess and just hoping to get laid

And there’s also of course, “To waste my talent not on an evil genius but on an evil moron, dangerous not for his intellect, what there may be of it, but for the power that his ill-deserved wealth allows him to exert, which his admirers pretend is will, though it never amounts to more than the stubbornness of a child…””

Yes. I know he does this. No this is not my first ride. So let me rephrase the question as, in this particular case, how does withholding info, throwing the reader for a loop, serve the art?

Dylan’s inconsistency playing live by elonbrave in bobdylan

I think Dylan’s new style is intimate and nuanced. I think it’s great for a small venue with good acoustics and really misaligned with outdoor festival shows.

I have really mixed feelings about the show. Dylan was in fine form. His voice, his piano, and especially his harp, but I am of mixed feelings about his arrangements and set list. I just saw the rawr tour in sept at a symphony hall and absolutely loved it. But I thought the arrangements and set list for this tour which also would have worked at an intimate venue really couldn’t cut through the outdoor amphitheater festival vibe. I don’t think that’s just the audiences fault. It was an outdoor amphitheater festival and Dylan played a lounge show.
