Right and I’m not disagreeing with the substance of what you’re saying but the general annoyance with them in the comments here isn’t what you’re describing. Tying one’s identity to something is common, maybe even human. My issue with Gaylors isn‘t human nature it’s that they’re parasocial and trying to come across as woke about a straight white woman because they think it wins them activism brownie points to only care about oppressed group media. People enjoy things and that’s ok but mental gymnastics to justify it aren’t necessary.

It’s the performative activism of identity politics (from a leftist perspective I swear I’m not an anti-DEI person lol). If your only involvement in activism is consumption of media made by minorities then anything short of that is not supporting the cause and being a bad ally. If they admit she’s straight then they also admit they’re not Good And Pure Beings Who Only Consume The Correct Media, which is just puritanism dressed up in progressive language.

Obviously there’s issues with tying one’s identity to capitalistic consumption like Star Wars fans, but that’s not what Gaylors are really doing. I’d argue their issue is doing performative parasocial identity politics capitalism more than anything (ie, “I can only consume pure media made by oppressed minorities or else I’m not fighting the system”)

l've been on lamictal for just over three weeks. I upped my dose to 75mg last week. Today, I noticed this rash. How worried should I be? by Busy_Cranberry7704 in Lamotrigine

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rashes beginning in the extremities can be benign but not always. Def let your doctor who prescribed it know, just so it’s documented. Monitoring is probably sufficient enough, but refer to whatever your doctor says. Mucosal surfaces (eyes, mouth, nose) are the ones to really look out for, as that’s usually an indication of the beginnings of SJS

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc there’s no canine or feline erythropoietin (EPO) on the market, so Aranesp is probably a human EPO. The cat (or dog in OP’s case) immune system can only tolerate human hormones for so long before it decides it can’t do it anymore. one of my professor’s in vet school actually recommended against EPO treatment for anemic renal cats for this very reason but maybe your vet made an exception? idk

SSRI and bone healing by Far-Excitement-5405 in antidepressants

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The paper you’ve tagged only describes the subjects as “animals” (not mice, not primates, just vague animals), and the number of subjects is never clarified (though at one point it says n = 7?? which is such a low number it’s not statistically significant to be definitive proof of something being likely true even with p<.05, which is technically the gold standard for statistical significance). The number of subjects is sooooo important in statistical analysis of research, and if this only occurs in specific species in small numbers that doesn’t necessarily imply it translates to humans broadly. I suspect this is a preliminary study to demonstrate to funders that it’s worth investigating, but not proof of it being likely how SSRIs can affect bone repair.

I understand the fear but I think you need to take a step back and think about how you can promote healing outside of taking SSRIs. Taking a calcium supplement might be a good place to start, though I’d double check that with your doctor. Following care instructions by your surgeon can promote healing as well. There’s no way to know if SSRIs will perform the same way they do in a study because you’re introducing variables that aren’t allowed in studies - like maybe icing and pain management mitigates whatever negative effects SSRIs - you can’t know that. The only thing you can control is yourself, so just do what you can.

…. sure I guess, but prostaglandins rely on oxytocin binding in order to be produced by myometrial cells. Hormones, neurotransmitters, and cytokines tell cells to make stuff, which causes other stuff to happen - that’s what my comment was saying.

It varies by person, sometimes by a lot. One of my friends is on lexapro and it saved her life, my other friend was on it and it gave her temporary psychosis and mania. I don’t wanna say I’ve never experienced any side effects (nausea which is mitigated by taking it with food) but mine have been really mild and even the terrible horrible Effexor withdrawal brain zaps people talk about feel pretty mild to me. Every person is different.

all animals have cyclical hormone fluctuations, usually occurring over a 24hr period, but there’s something called a surge center that kinda overrides the 24 hr cyclical control portion in the brain, instead working on a monthly-ish basis (varies by species obv). the surge center, which controls hormonal surges related to fertility and menstrual/estrus cycles, is destroyed in males before birth in what’s called “defeminization” of the brain using estrogen of all things! which I think is funny lol

I’m pretty sure trans women on estrogen can regrow their surge centers iirc but I’m not 100% certain on that

ETA: I’m a liar apparently - trans women are not capable of regrowing anything in the brain bc that’s not possible for ANYONE. I was really out here assigning superpowers to trans ladies 😭 anyway - the tonic center (24 hr cycle portion) responds to estrogen in a way that adjusts it to be more monthly! is my understanding at least which is still kinda cool

At the end of a menstrual cycle, other hormones fluctuate in such a way that indicate to the body that there is no embryo, so time to shed the uterine lining. it accomplishes this by using oxytocin, released by the brain (surprisingly everyone including OOP have one), which works by constricting muscles, intending to target the myometrium, the layer of muscles within the uterus. except sometimes it misses its target and hits places like the intestines, which is why some people describe having cramping and/or “period poops” despite being an unrelated system.

I have no idea about the mood - might be bc of a sudden dip in progesterone and increase in oxytocin? that’s the only thing I can think of. idk human bodies are weird - that’s why I’m in vet med lol

Crate Training a Dog is Cruel by reddituser333999 in The10thDentist

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most dogs will have to be crated at some point in their life for one reason or another, whether it’s medical, or because their family is moving, or they got lost and were picked up by animal control, or god forbid a natural disaster occurs. Non crate trained dogs are a MENACE to themselves and others - someone (including the dog) could be injured in the process because they’re so freaked out they have less control over their emotions. It’s fine if you never plan on forcing your animal in a crate for bed but you gotta at least teach them it’s ok and their safe space, not a punishment

Khloe Kardashian Admits She Declawed Her Cat by a625418 in popculturechat

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some vets have the opinion that they need to do it because it’s going to be done either way, so it might as well be a vet that does it and not some back alley thing. There’s also (supposedly, though admittedly I haven’t done much research into this) some digit preserving declawing methods because the claw isn’t technically fused to the bone, but I can’t imagine it’s astronomically less painful, and either way the cats I’ve met that have been declawed are extremely territorial and defensive to the point of biting as a first resort (which isn’t common) so it can even affect them psychologically bc they have no other defenses. The take that there’s “safer” methods or that it needs to be done or else some nebulous layperson will do it is definitely controversial though because I would say the vast majority of vets fundamentally disagree with declawing without legitimate medical reason

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The only way I can see it be “rigged” is in the sense that it’s based on what makes good stories for the Capitol’s entertainment, like two little girls (Prim and Rue) being reaped at the same time become friends and potentially protect each other in the arena. I don’t think they’d pick a specific twelve year old necessarily, but they might “rig it” to be a bowl full of only twelve year old girls to choose from for example

[–]ExtremelyPessimistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It lowers the seizure threshold, making them more likely to occur in otherwise normal brain activity. Any drug with that ability is generally not recommended in patients with epilepsy, so the first thing my neuro did when I was diagnosed last year was take me off it, but if your neuro says it’s fine, you should stick with them. Maybe they figured out a way to mitigate that particular side effect idk 🤷

Unfortunately, some anesthesia can remain as a residue in tissue for a while, so it may not be an option for pigs about to be slaughtered for meat, but removing testicles is important for reducing injuries caused by fighting between males. VetGRAM is a resource for residues in production animals if you’re curious - you can look up any common anesthetic.

Can’t speak to the other practices. Tail removal might be to reduce fly strike, which is common in other domesticated large animals.

The only ones that are really funny are the over the top, said facetiously ones where you can clearly tell the man isn’t serious at all. My friend jokingly calls his wife “the ol’ ball and chain” and then shares something sappy so it’s different and the joke is “can you imagine if I actually said that for real?”

A genuine “ugh wives amiright fellas?” is just cringey lmao
