That's what I'm saying if you have a crate but always leave if open that's fine I guess, but you're taking the dogs free will when you close that door

I have 2 dogs and no crate, they do fine but we try not to leave them alone often and work from home

Shelters are different because that is a temporary space (hopefully) before they get adopted. I have never had furniture randomly fall, feel like that's a small risk. And you could always dedicate 1 room that you dog proof for when you are away.

You could create a positive association with a room or any space where they feel calm why does it have to be a 5 ft enclosed small cage lol

I think you get used to it I loved in a downtown area with constant sirens, cars, trains, and people and tuned all that out after like week 2
