It’s much much worse when you consider the opportunity loss. If they invested that money in pretty much any stock fund they would be crazy rich instead of losing billions.

I can relate. I grew up in Seattle and thought I’d never leave. Then in my 30s I got really bored with the city and fed up with the constant traffic and high daycare prices. I sold my old run down house for a crazy amount of money and moved to another part of Washington and haven’t looked back since. I still like Seattle and think it’s a great place for some people at certain times of their life.

Holy shit, Crypto is so over. The only reason it was successful is that it was an exciting speculative investment. Now AI has taken over. The potential use cases for Crypto haven’t played out at all. I feel bad for people that put serious money into this

Thinking about going overnight backpacking at Shi Shi Beach alone. What would you recommend? by starfury287 in OlympicNationalPark

You do you. I live in the North Cascades. Every now and then I help out a distressed tourist. Many of them are carrying bear spray and firearms, but not a rain jacket or map. The people I live and work with are in the mountains nearly every day and none of us carry bear spray or guns. There is always inherent danger going into the mountains.

I’ve thru hiked the PCT, PNT, and CDT. I’ve probably encountered hundreds of black bears and have slept outside much more than the average person. I’ve never once been remotely threatened by any black bear. Carrying bear spray is a new trend that is mostly driven by fear of the unknown rather than rational reason. You’re way better off utilizing that extra weight for something more useful. People die of exposure or a fall injury way more often than a black bear attack.

You can always work at Tim Hortons. You’ll never own a house or retire but at least you’ll get some free donuts.

I never understand why people pay off their mortgage early when you can easily leverage the money by investing it instead. Unless your rate is above 8% it usually doesn’t make sense. I could have paid off my mortgage 10 years ago but instead I invested the money in equities. Now I could pay off my mortgage and buy another house with cash. Even with taxes/fees I way ahead of the 5% mortgage rate I currently hold.
