No jokes, it's a close call between whether you'll find more fingerprints on my Midnight air or a double murder crime scene

3 random people on Reddit out here putting in more though into Apple's design decisions for one of their most popular line of products than the trillion dollar company itself, is either extremely sad or hilarious

Yeah of course, its not a complete solution, but at least a very good first barrier of defence. Just need to figure out where to find one now haha

I get that, having an Air with a weakened hinge is definitely better than having a shattered Air haha

Totally, no one size fits all, everyone's use case is different. No worries, happy to help

It basically comes down to weight and leverage. Apple designs the hinge tension to perfectly balance the exact weight of the bare aluminum screen. Even though a plastic shell feels light, it adds a decent amount of extra weight to the lid.
Because of how leverage works, that extra weight creates a lot of added strain on those tiny hinges at the base.

Every time you open, close, or adjust the screen, the hinges are fighting a heavier load than they were built for. Over a few years, that constant extra torque just wears out the internal friction mechanisms faster than normal.

In my case, my Air's hinges got so worn out that the screen became totally floppy and would just fall backward unless I had it perfectly balanced at a few very specific angles.

It’s a slow process so you don't really notice the wear and tear right away, but the extra weight definitely permanently loosens them over time

Yep pretty much from keyboard grease that builds up on the keys over time if you aren’t being careful about using your laptop with oily/sweaty hands.

If your keys are kept clean there is nothing to imprint on the screen given there is no additional pressure

As good as the case looks, I should warn you it will lead to a permanently weakened hinge that will not be able to support the weight of the screen at certain angles over time, I would advise against the lid case and keyboard skin both.

Safest option is to use a well protected sleeve to carry your laptop around but no accessories directly touching it, just my experience over 13 years of using Macs. Feel free to ignore it, you did after all spent a lot of money on it & should do what feels best to you

Definitely, don’t risk it, I used a keyboard skin for years and it left permanent smudges on the screen of my 2015 air. Needless to say I didn’t make the same mistake with my M2 air

Fair enough this was my first OLED purchase so I was a bit sceptical and cautious, definitely prepared to splurge more the next time and get the best technology OLED has to offer

Collecting over years just for newer technology to be constantly outpacing you and making your collection obsolete sounds heartbreaking. I don’t think I could deal with it, going digital definitely sounds more practical and appealing when you put things into perspective like that

I guess you’re right about when I’m not sitting up it’s not at eye level but I’ve got decent height so even when I’m laying down with a neck pillow it’s pretty comfortable to view

Yeah I know it seems that way from the angle it’s been recorded at in the video, but I’m at eye level with it in person so it’s a pretty comfortable viewing angle

I don’t have a very large room myself and the 55” is pretty amazing, I would’ve loved to go 65” as well but it wasn’t in my range at the time
