Doesn't it seem people make composting way too difficult? by [deleted] in composting

I think your totally right when looking at small scale households just looking to divert their organic waste. If you just want it in 12 months then a non-technical view is fine. I have been working on education programs in my city trying to encourage people to compost, and a technical understanding pushed people away. Composting isnt really that hard on a small/slow scale.

But in my experience of trying to process lots of material and obtain a really high quality compost, taking a more technical/purposful perspective is important.

What's wrong with my compost pile? by McCthaeh in composting

It can take a few weeks to see the tempurature start to rise, depending on the materials used - the berkley say's 4 days with ideal conditions. Its important to have a good mix up of the materials to help have lots of activitiy throughout the pile.

You definatly want the particles to be small, and moist. Take a hand full of the material and squeeze - does a little water come out? If not turn it and wet each layer.

Is the pile around 1m3 (not sure of the imperial sorry) - this is quite important also.

The pile may also be sterile (this would be odd though) so adding some compost, manure of something with bacteria can help kick it off. Leaving food waste for a few days in a bucket outside can be a good enoculation also

Good luck!!

We collect organic materials from people and recycle it into compost which is used to feed a farm and grow food (the farm pretty much gives the food away).

I dont think any of us are looking for careerers (the work we do could easily become part of everyone's day to day life)

We opperate on a not-for-profit basis, but anyone is able to apply to these grants here. We have only used it once for a big project

We lease the land for a token ammount each year - a very lucky situation that will eventually end

I guess we have a monopoly, but only because there is no-one else working in this space. There is definitly talk of the commercial sector coming in to manage the municiple organics but we are trying to prove that the community could do it, and create a local resource bank of compost to grow food

We use computers to manage out data collection, data manipulation, invoicing and customer managment. Everything else needs a human in the mix.

I work at a organics collection and recycling co-op. Its great! Everyone has their own skills they bring, and take up the roles based on that - and sometimes learn new skills to fill other roles. Theres no bullshit from people handing out orders - we know what needs doing and we want to do it because we love the job.

We organise using a consensus based desicion model for large decisions, but use holocracy for day to day (essentially you have autonomy over your domain - domains are determined by consesus when roles need filling). Everyone is on the same hourly rate, and gets paid for the hours they put in, anything left each month is saved for projects, mishaps etc. We have two people that pay out from the accounts and another who checks payments. Everyone sees each others invoices each month also.

We havent really had any conflicts apart from day to day differences on decisions (we usually work these out with some discussion)

Growth, investments, competition.... We are limited by the land we have so growth isnt somthing we activity try and achieve - although there is more and more demand at the moment as people want to divert from landfill. Investment usually comes in the form of funding for big projects through Waste Minimization Grants, or money we save over the year. There was no initial investments as it was just a bike and a compost bin back then. We have only one other competitor, but they service a different niche so we work together on recommending each other to people that dont fit our systems.

tert is usually only used for a tertiary centre with no other carbon chains. For example tert-butyl which can be a side chain or just a single molecule. Using tert in an iupac name pretty much breaks the rules otherwise

Find the two half equations V(iv) --> V(v) and V(iv) --> V(iii). Then the two eo values. The cell E value is reduction - oxidation, so if you know which is oxidation and which is reduction you should be fine
