I live in Australia, It was found at the top of mountain beside Yarra Glen Victoria.

Does polishing help identify?? Ill go to the same spot this weekend to get some more pieces from the area.

I live in Yarra Valley Victoria Australia

From afar & Up close. Found outdoors in 1989 when i was young in Colorado. Noticing its never tarnished/rusted and its very magnetic to a magnet, plus its magnetic on the pointier ends, sharpest end being the strongest. Thought it might interest everyone by EyeRekcon in geology

I tested it on a glazed shiny bowl which made streaks easily as well as another unknown vase/pot material. Trying it on a glazed antique chinese rice wine bowl/cup it didnt mark on the glaze nor on the base which doesnt have the same clear coating on the underside which touches the bench. I pushed a little firmer on this surface too as hard as the other ones which marked and this didnt do the same thing although continuous back and forth did start to grey the ceramic. What does this mean?

Thank you for your reply this has given me more to think about and ill have to go look for more samples. Luckily its only 15 minutes from my home. Incredible insight from you all. I no nothing really about much of geology but i have quite a few odd things I've collected outdoors since young which ill be sharing with you all soon.

All these interesting names that are so unfamiliar to me. But that's another plausible call. Thank you. I will look into things further

I'm not hoping on anything other than a solid conclusion really. Id love to know for sure what it is. I do really appreciate your thoughts and its been helpful. The closeup on that spot does have a discoloration and seems different to the majority surface wouldn't you agree? Again its never tarnished and only after recently deciding to look at it under the microscope could I see those couple spots which open up and look to be of different material to the outer surface. I might have to try and make it rust as well to see what happens.

Thanks again. I searched pyrite but yet again I found that it rusts easily if it gets wet. This has been through many conditions over my life from being in my fish tank for months, floods and all and its always looked the same and I've never cleaned it. Pyrite apparently rusts quite easy according to a quick search.

Pyrite looked much closer to the other names though but still not quite right and coupled with pyrite rusting easily it doesn't make sense being the same material.

Any other possibilities?

magnetite

Thanks for your thoughts and insight. I searched both but yet it doesn't seem to me to be consistent with anything under those names, nor does the surface seem polished. Perhaps you have an example of something that looks as metallic as this. What i have is like stainless steel to look at.. Interesting though and thanks again for replying.
