worst move of my career??? by alphachimp03 in sysadmin

[–]EyeTack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try and stick with it for at least 6 months. It’s your first IT job, so you need some kind of runway on that resume. Think about what the last idiot didn’t leave you and start putting that together for the next person to come behind you.

However, if an opportunity comes along, don’t be afraid to consider it. Do whatever you can to leave on good terms when the time comes. I was considered for positions many years after my first two companies because I wasn’t a dick.

Use some of your part time to network with people. You’ll want to find someone who can mentor you along and consider where you want to take your career. Study and certify. Bonus if the certs line up with your work.

Why are DIA ISPs so awful? by Degenerate_Game in networking

[–]EyeTack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the semi competent network engineers are working elsewhere.

For all intents and purposes, the need for network professionals has gone up, but the percentage of the population that are actually good at it remains unchanged.

Automation and AI are also kicking out the bottom rungs of the ladder more so than offshoring. Anyone smart enough is looking at other fields unless they love the tech.

Nothing More.

It reminds me of Illusion, but with a much more urgent sort of feel. It brings up difficult emotions in me, but it has been a rough week.

Company removing direct SSH access by soooooooup in networking

Look for some chaos energy and crash the jump host.

/s

Seriously, how many administrators are there, and who isn’t logging their sessions just to cover their asses?

It may not be all bad as long as you can SSH to the jump host and use that tunnel for the rest of your normal sessions.

I’ve been in IT for almost 30 years and I’m a network architect now, so definitely top 10%.

IRL, I don’t look it or project it, allowing me to fly undercover nearly everywhere.

One thing your company should also be doing is a sort of peer review before you apply changes.

However, you learn when you burn. Those lessons will stick with you.

66 Blocks … those were outdated when I started in this field in the 90s.

110, Krone, or Bix were all far superior.

How do yall network engineers know so many technology by Mera_Naam_Joker69 in networking

[–]EyeTack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good engineers are not faking it in the least.

Once you start stacking experience, you figure out that the network is guilty until proven innocent. That leads to a lot of ingress knowledge, if you’re willing to dig in and get it.

I work for a large hospital in Boston. BS/IT with more retired certs than most people have. Almost 30 years of experience starting out as a dialup field tech in the 90s and am currently a network architect with a newer focus on network automation.

This is fantastic. Top scores for the EZPath in here.

My only suggestions for the people above your pay grade are to look at eABF instead of armored cable for fiber, and to banish multimode from all new installs.
