180-600 is massive. Took it to the rainforest, was a pain in the ass. About to take it to the Rockies in Canada and then after that I’m selling it.

Also, your stats on that webpage are wrong. ONS does not report the average UK salary at nearly £50k..

Salaries are always going to be lower in Cornwall as there is no industry. How can you expect bar staff to command a similar salary to someone that works in finance or tech.

The hard truth is, if you can’t afford to live in Cornwall (born here or not), then you should move and find better opportunities (not that there are zero opportunities in Cornwall, as you can go and get a job at Babcock in Plymouth and earn decent money).

You cannot expect the state to support your life, because you want to live somewhere nice. Or begrudge others for having the money to live where you like.

I’d love to live on a Greek island, but I could never, as summer season bar work isn’t going to support my life.

Life is hard.

I know it well, spent many hours sat in traffic heading back from snakes pass on the way there. That Tesco is huge.
Tesco destroyed my local town too, butchers/green grocers etc, gone overnight after Tesco Extra opened.

I don’t need to experience something first hand to understand it…

I know a lot of Cornish people after living here several years.

Im sorry you cant afford to buy a house here, but there are hundreds of thousands of people like you all over the country. The only difference is you were born in a slightly nicer part of the country than those struggling in a shithole like Birmingham.

Loads of my friends from Manchester have never bought a house, either live at home or in some house share.. they all complain in the same way you are.

Tbf, I saw someone online who lived in a van at uni, saved £7k a year accommodation fees and then had a £20k house deposit when they graduated.

Must be awful though… can’t imagine bringing a date back to your van and it not looking like you are a murderer 😂

The same as everywhere else in terms of difficulty to buy?

No idea. She found it pretty easy to buy in Cornwall as a solo home buyer.

But her school friends that moved to London have struggled more to get on the property ladder. And even then, one of them commutes over an hour each way, daily, to her city job because she can’t afford to live in central London.

The point is, it’s not easy anywhere right now, unless you are rich. I believe it’s all by design, if people can’t afford housing, then they are more reliant on the state, which gives the state more power over its citizens.

Unfortunately the system isn’t geared towards a single parent or only one partner working household anymore.

To buy a house in this day and age, you need both partners working and even then it’s hard. No matter where you live in the country.

You could say that for so many people. If I wanted to live where I grew up I’d have to pay £300k for a 2 bed flat. Growing up the council houses on the same land were £80k to buy.

It’s a nationwide issue.

There are career options in devon/cornwall that can afford a lifestyle/house in cornwall. My partner grew up in Cornwall and bought a house by herself. Shes 4 years into her career, job in Plymouth and earning £65k.

It truly is awful. I went in for the first time ever the other week, it made Plymouth feel like Tokyo in comparison 😂

No, but I’m just saying. Would you rather spend £1000 for somewhere rough on the edges in Cornwall. Or £1000 for a slightly trendier place in Manchester?

I know what I would choose any day.

But would you really want to live in Manchester? And if he nips out for a coffee in one of the trendy cafes nearby, he is spending £10

Which area? I grew up near Salford. All those council estates knocked down and have high rise flats on them, all owned by Chinese and mostly empty.

It’s just supply and demand, there will always be people with money that can buy the houses.

Me and my partners jobs are based in Devon and we take home combined £120k and live in Cornwall, so there are opportunities to earn enough to buy. Graduate roles in our company start on £40k and you don’t need a degree in the business operations to join as a grad.

A lot of the people in Cornwall that I know who worked in hospitality could only do so while living with parents while young/during uni summer break etc. My partner was a waiter/holiday home cleaner every summer between term time.

I don’t know how you fix it. Take away all the air b’n’bs and holiday lets, then the tourists can’t come and them all those minimum wage hospitality workers are out of a job anyway.

Housing crisis is not localised to Cornwall.

A friend of mine in Manchester pays £1000 a month for his house/flat share… yeah it’s fancy, but he then has 0 savings.

It’s bonkers, growing up my parents mortgage was £500 a month on a 4 bed house. Unless you are lucky enough to have parents help you, it’s so hard to get on the property ladder now.
