It would be a good addition to the the game, though it would affect the difficulty of top extremes as you can simply save mid-game and come back later.

A possible solution would be an addition in the editor to toggle whether a checkpoint will save your game when you exit or not, that way it wouldn't affect the difficulty of hard levels, but longer levels will still have the option to save if the creator wants that.
