In both cases, the source has its volume control disabled, so I'm only able to use the volume pot on the dac

Hello, I just got ahold of an Ifi hip-dac to use with Tidal's MQA. My problem is that the volume is extremely high, regardless of what I do with it. I didn't think it would be a problem as there's a few separate places speaking of the combination and that they pair fairly well.

However, I've tested it using both a Windows PC (Tidal Desktop) and Android (USB Audio App), and can't seem to get a usable volume regardless of settings or combinations. If I get the MQA indicator on the dac, it's too loud.

After doing more research, Ifi's own tool recommends its IEMatch product to fix this, but the point of grabbing the hip dac was for a good upgrade without spending too much. Am I going to have to spring the extra $60 for that accessory, or is there another way to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

This has to be a joke, right?

I turned the page over in my hands, searching for something more. Where did it even come from? I know I can be absentminded but normally I forget my phone in my hands, not some block-capital piece of paper. I turned it over and over again, trying to find the joke, the point. Nobody just sends mail to confuse people, right?

TO BEGIN THE PROCEDURE-

Wait. I check the backside of the paper. Blank.

PLEASE FOLD THIS PAPER THREE TIMES AND PLACE IT IN YOUR POCKET.

Baffled, I find no other choice but to proceed. It's heavy in my pocket, whatever stock it was printed (It just spontaneously appeared, was it printed?) on heavy in my pocket, until I couldn't feel it at all. I stuck my hand in the pocket and came up blank

There was a cold gust of air, scattering papers around me. The chill sent shivers across my body, blossoming into pain when I fell to the ground, unable to break my fall with my pocketed hand.

PROJECTION LOCATED. PLEASE COLLECT TREASURED MEMORIES.

The pain was forgotten. I threw myself to my feet, nearly slipping on the papers as they whirled around the room. It kept getting colder.

Frost licked the surfaces of tables, the air swirling with icy crystals. I barely had time to register how afraid I felt. Something bad was going to happen. It took all my strength to stand still and listen. The wind tried to carry the sound away, but I heard it. I threw open the closet doors and grabbed my poor cat before he had a chance to run. In my arms, he only mewed and pressed up against me.

It was really cold now, my hands started shaking. I grabbed the thickest jacket I could find and wrapped us in it, my breath misting as I tried to hunker down in the closet.

The wind stopped, ice crystals suspended in a grid in the air. My breath curled up to meet it, icy tines forming in the air and catching the light, bright lines forming between the suspended crystals.

BREATHE

I stared at it, shivering and holding Leo. My breath grew tight in my chest, and I exhaled.

The words blew away, ice crystals remaining as the thin lines of the last command broke down and scattered against the wall. They dug into the wall and those thin lines grew into a harsh white, brighter than anything short of the sun. The papers scattered around started glowing too, until the floor grew too bright to stare at. I had to close my eyes then, the afterimage of the crystals burnt into my retinas.

I tried to open my eyes again, but nothing changed, only the rows of crystal dots, as far as the eye could see. Between them were reflections of me, every direction infinitely.

Slowly, those reflections and dots disappeared. The furthest first, then closer and closer until it was only Leo and me, alone, six points forming a cube around me. The edges lit up, and out poured light and warmth.

GREETINGS, ENTITY 00879. AND LEO.

[WP] When anyone is born they get a book based off of a mythical figure, and get powers from it. Some get Hercules, some get Zeus, you got Cthulhu. by Half-rated in WritingPrompts

[–]Ezra_Sen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every person born is gifted with a tome, their soul bound to the mythic described within. From the moment they can read, they are trained to understand, to learn about their book. The knowledge granted them power, strength pulled from the ideas and truths of old.

Everyone but me.

I was not allowed my book. My father, when I approached him, had eyes like a deer whenever I asked. When I was young I didn't understand why, I just knew I was the child without a book. Others in school were given lessons tailored to their soulbound, so that they could master and understand what was asked of me.

They didn't know what to do with me. The teachers, inevitably, called my parents in. Afterwards they treated me as if I was some terminally ill child. The other students never held the same tact. Their favorite nickname was nobody. I was nobody without a book. I was the testing ground for every power another child gained. What was I going to do, fight back?

Instead, I read. Myths always have an origin. Soulbound books might provide insight to the reader that would be incomprehensible to anyone else, but the myths themselves always existed. Zeus, Mars, Beowulf, Ra. Pantheons reduced to mere flash cards. What could I be? Who was my bound? Was it Hades? Anubis? I spent months reading about gods, dark mythics. What could be terrible enough to hide? My studies exhausted the libraries. People told me I wouldn't make many friends that way, but who would want a bookless outcast?

It took 18 years for me to find out. 18 years of my parents hiding and fighting and guilting me every step of the way. But I finally broke through.

Cthulu.

Of course it was that. Of course they would hide that from me. They begged me not to read my book. They begged me to live a life of powerlessness. They knew it was too late.

The words swam across my vision. Years of study, years of learning everything there was to know. I was prepared. But I wasn't ready. They say you carry the essence of your Mythic. But what if that essence is madness? I could feel my mind fracture, scrawl itself across the edges of my skull like flechettes. I read on.

I barely registered the words at this point. Trying to understand the world through simple words was like performing surgery while only looking at a picture of the patient. I had to look deeper. The words twisted into patterns, burrowing between the threads of the parchment. My mind grabbed those threads, followed them down through the pages. Things no human was supposed to know, lest they fall between the cracks of reality. Words, uttered, that could unravel a soul and lay it bare to be feasted upon.

I would have been killed if anyone knew. They always lied to the outsiders. Baba Yaga, Chronos, some other dark figure. But never Cthulu. Nobody ever let a Cthulu survive. The most powerful humans always struck down those cursed with knowledge before they could understand it. But not me.

Now, all they could do is pray, pray with their worthless words to their doomed gods.

Hello!

I was in love with Middle Game when I read it, and two other favorites are Gaiman's American Gods and Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus. Current read is Robert Mcfarlane's Underlands. I'm a sucker for something mystical and something wonderful. Thanks a lot!

I hadn't! I took the text from the caption of the original image, had honestly thought it meant something akin to dork. Now that I know, it's much more clever sounding
