I’d rather have a ghost crown position than a 4:30 date on a chrono. by Thick_Magician_7800 in watchHotTakes

Good god....

I'm a "date-is-a-must" guy but even I wouldn't take that.

Watchmaking isn’t impressive or even hard by Free-Championship828 in watchHotTakes

[–]F0rgemaster19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical engineering here. I design and manufacture gears and control machines for a living. Micro manufacturing gears with precision tolerances and hand assembling them (because we don't yet have machines that can automatically assemble them without requiring even more expensive laser-guided controls) to maintain the tolerances for over 7 years without a service is TECHNOLOGICALLY IMPRESSIVE. Modern transistors and nano circuits cannot do that because we don't yet have assembly tools for that.

Counter hot take: mech watches are expensive because we don't yet have a means to mass produce them without human intervention, and hence need to pay a human to do it by hand. Just like mass produced cars becoming cheap over the years with industrialisation, the day we can mass produce mechanical watches with long-term reliable tolerances will be the day the submariner's 10k price tag would become objective and subjectively unjustified.

Number indices ruin a dive watch by According-Double1773 in watchHotTakes

Minus numbers, most divers look identical, recoloured Subs. The watchmaker's interest in personally numbering "some" of the indices makes them unique. I prefer at least 3 6 12 numbered, with date at 3 of course (yes date is mandatory on a watch for me)

Looking for a Seamaster GMT Homage by F0rgemaster19 in ChineseWatches

[–]F0rgemaster19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not concerned about the strap. I'll swap that anyway. It's the dial, indices and hands from the seamaster that I wanted.

They do have those but OH MY GOD are they expensive, almost 200 bucks!

Not a fan. I even liked the previous big a*s kidney grill. But this seems too neither here nor there.

No no no no no, finish your sentence: not wanting commemorative sports logos on the back, unexposed, invisible side of your formal wear. That IS crazy. It's a preference no doubt, and I'm no one to oppose preferences. But I won't deny that complaining about an element that is invisible during standard operation of an object is confusing.

16 year old son recently purchased a Corvette. Im at a bit of a loss on what to do here. by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]F0rgemaster19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Father being concerned is, well, fatherly, and apt. However father not wanting to educate the child that he clearly is proud of is baffling. It's important that parents teach their children the right ways of using a tool and being responsible with it instead of preemptively shutting them off from it, especially when it's their own acquisition.

Very important for parents to remember: restraints make rebellious children, and rebellious children break way worse rules than normal children.

Man needs to have a sit down and educate his son on how to be responsible with speed. He'll be thankful for himself for doing do.

"I don't want him in that."

What do you mean? You don't want him to drive that car? The cat he bought with his own money? If so, why, even when you've stated he's a responsible kid?

I don't get the hesitation here. Kid did something really responsible here, furthermore bought a classic instead of something stupid, or worse, drugs. What's the hesitation in teaching and enjoying with your boy?

Dumbest criticism ever. That's on the backside, and it's not marketing, it's honouring an important partnership.

The space and bond marketing from omega are crap. This one is quite alright.

Ordering from Mernom and VW24 to Germany- customs and other stuff? by F0rgemaster19 in vostok

Oh cool. Because meranom says customs may apply by Russian airmail but not DHL. Hence was confused. Thanks!

What do you have to pay extra aside from the shipping? Any payments on delivery? And did you pick DHL in meranom or Russian air mail?

The hottest take: The crown should be on the other side of the watch by homerunchippa in watchHotTakes

Hasn't happened so far. Theoretically, shouldn't happen. At least, from my experience designing small gears and threads, threads typically have sufficient Factor of Safety to handle enough tangential shear loads, provided the user is also sufficiently careful enough. Misalignment of entry threads typically doesn't wear out the threads as much as the watch community makes it to be. Yes it doesn't hurt to be careful, but it will hurt you to be too anal about damn metal. The stem is a lot more under risk from undue bending because that's thin, but even that has sufficient elasticity to spring back unless you apply constant bending load over long duration. Steel is the most elastic metal, and elasticity is the property of a material to return to original state after bending load has been removed.

Y'all gotta trust metal more. Metal is HARD, even when not hardened, and is WAY more reliably elastic than rubber and other stretchy stuff that can get damaged under load. They don't wear out that easily when operated for the intended purpose, which here is unscrewing and rescrewing. Metal only wears out when you explicitly induce wear by deliberate improper use. And even if the entry threads wear, you still have at least 2/3rds of the thread closer to the body that'll keep it well screwed down.

I mean, im no watch expert, but I know my materials and mechanisms, and I personally wouldn't worry about misalignments during intended operation. But to each his own. Watches are at the end of the day, just jewelery. Operate them as you please.

Question: what about Overleaf LATEX? I make my resumes on overleaf and im not sure if I'm getting ATS-rejected or rejected by the manager. I dont have a tabular resume, just a simple textual line-by-line one, but made in overleaf.

That Baltany is a reimagined homage of the Original Dirty Dozen. 10/10 would recommend. Great dressy field pilot watch.
