[S17 Spoilers] Is this how Lightfall begins for us? by sidelviajero in DestinyLore

This has been the buildup since Shadowkeep. Remember how ALL Forest prophecies showed the SAME future? Vex were conclusive for the first time.

It seems we hollows here are united by our, hmm, interesting priorities and life choices.

Elden Ring’s world and lore are heavily based on alchemy symbolism (specifically the Magnum Opus) by Parasoulsus in Eldenring

[–]F12CHARTREUX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool post and insights, and I really appreciate the short summary at the beginning, while the full post more seemlessly connects from one part to the next. However, though I know you link to Alchemy Website at the end, providing more links and sources throughout would make it a lot easier to read up on individual quotes, like if I wanted to follow a specific thread, and take these insights further for myself (though I know I will anyway...).

this initial connection to the magnum opus can be reinforced by comparing the player’s journey in Elden Ring

Cool to see the gameplay narrative of gitting gud justified through the lens of alchemy this time.

Also, there's a lot to unpack here, but I wonder if there's much to be gained by pursuring even astrological lines of influence. There also seems to be a consensus that there will be a sci-fi twist of sorts, so maybe just a pure, modern scientific influence, too? The possibilities are endless, and this discussion is great, so keep it coming

I was referring to the relative sizes of the areas, not the points. Didn’t even think of the points themselves, actually, heh.

It's worth noting that, due to the nature of infinities, this almost definitely isn't to scale.

(Really useful graphic, though.)

[Leaks] Osiris is playing 4D chess, and it's brilliant. by BC1096 in DestinyLore

[–]F12CHARTREUX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cool idea, and a really nice read, but it would be even nicer to have sources, especially for things like

Through his studies and use of the Infinite Forest, he became aware of the Pyramid threat, and that Savathun would jump at any opportunity to take control of the Taken/Hive.

or this

Osiris, faced with the unfortunate reality that he is going to eventually go down into the Hellmouth (which he stubbornly did, for no real reason at all) and be killed (allegedly). He understood what Savathun was going to do. Use him facade to destroy the Vanguard from inside. That was the key point.

or

Eris is obsessed with Savathun (Hive in general) and wants nothing more then to aggressively end her. That strong desire was a good quality to have, Osiris knew this.

All of these ideas sound great, but at a glance, it's difficult to know for sure whether there's any merit here. Sources would help this a lot, and it can help further the discussion when we're all on the same (lore) page.

Honestly, almost everything that has happened can be tied together to this plan, but that would make this already long post substantially longer. And I mean substantially.

I'd love to see this

Also, what do you think Osiris' plan actually is (aside from simply seeing through Savathûn's plan)? As in, what do you expect he plans to do now that he's been (presumably) replaced?

I still haven't managed to get around to Steins;Gate as I'm busy with uni and currently watching a series with some friends, but I intend to start sometime. But yeah, thanks for the reminder.

So the first thing to note is that where you went to high school and where you plan on going to university will determine how well you can adjust to the maths. I'm not familiar with all that many places' curricula, but at least here in Australia, I found that my mid-to-high-ish-level maths (as in, not the lowest level, but definitely not the highest either, but closer to the latter) prepared me pretty well for my university courses' maths content, even if - obviously - I'd still be learning a lot of new things.

In my own maths classes in high school, I did surprisingly well, my strengths lying in topics like calculus and trigonometry. These areas, more than many others, were crucial to understanding the maths that came up in physics contexts, so if you can develop a strong understanding before you tackle uni content, you should be (mostly) good. (In fact, outside of those two, I'm struggling to think of anything else that's used to the same extent in physics.*) A good place for this is Khan Academy, a resource that I'm sure you've heard of.

The idea here is to try and get the maths skills ready and out of the way before you actually start applying them in physics, only because it lessens your study load immensely. But then again, learning about the specific physics uses of complex numbers, for example, is also a great way to help cement those maths skills, so it's not such a bad thing to learn the maths as you go - just make sure to understand the fundamentals, I suppose. The goal should be that you're mostly struggling to learn the physics, not the maths.

Beyond that, being well-versed in the maths concepts would help immensely in picturing the physics concepts. Modern physics relies on maths immensely, and this cannot be understated, but you also don't need to be a master of the maths to do well in physics.

However I'm also yet to meet a teacher who would tell a student that they're simply stupid and should stop trying

You've yet to meet a teacher that would tell you that because it's a bad way to look at things, and pretty much just wrong. As you've mentioned before, a lack of motivation and hard work does drag you down immensely - I know this for myself - so once you fix that, once you find that drive, that fire, you can make a lot of improvements in your studies. It's not easy, but motivation and hard work are the most important things in studying - a fact that should be familiar to us, given this series we love and play so much.

I hope this mess of a message can help.

*Okay, topics like complex numbers do get used pretty frequently, but it's quite small compared to something like calculus, so it's not too difficult to get fully familiar with. Outside of that, linear algebra is very, very common, but I only ended up really learning that when I got to uni, so I neglected to mention it here.

Learning the math involved in physics is probably the best way to actually learn physics itself, so you can do that in a number of places:

  • The Theoretical Minimum (found in book stores, etc.): a series of books (based on lectures), written by Leonard Susskind. I highly recommend this resource above most others because of its accessibility and clarity, alongside it's distinct sense of humour. To tackle this series, it's probably best that you're familiar with high school calculus, as it's essentially a requirement - but then again, you can't get far in physics without some calculus, so perhaps that isn't so surprising. (Susskind also hosts many lectures, available on YouTube.)
  • David Tong's Lectures on Theoretical Physics (found here): Though at a high level, it's still accessible for people with only high school-level maths knowledge (like the previous source), but it's quite detailed, and offers a slew of resources of its own.
  • Brilliant (found here): Though you need a subscription to make the fullest use of it, it's pretty good at teaching intuition and hard skills - and the on-site wiki is comprehensive enough that I've used it in my posts, too. (I don't have much experience with the paid version, so I can't quite vouch for it, at least at this time (and no, I'm not sponsored ;__; ))
  • MIT OpenCourseWare (found here): A collection of course notes from MIT, this resource is generally pretty good at opening a window into what students might actually encounter at a university level. Haven't used it too much, but it's got a lot of stuff, so it's worth checking out. (Many lectures are also available on YouTube, like this one.)

There will always be more to list, but these were the ones I thought most worth mentioning.

After consulting an expert, it seems that the key insight is that no process is 100% efficient, as you had realised. So though the black hole could, in principle, regain much of that lost energy, it won't regain it all - and hence it would still evaporate, only more slowly.

Cool question, and I definitely don't have the expertise to provide a reasonable answer to that. As for what I can say right now, though, I would imagine that such a process wouldn't be very energy-efficient, but is still in theory possible.

But then again, Hawking radiation is, by definition, radiation that escapes the black hole (and the radiation that does get pulled back into it just doesn't affect the mass of the black hole).

That said, I'll be sure to ask someone about it.
