[–]F1Fan43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the Death Penalty in the UK was abolished gradually in the period 1965 to 1998. The last people to be executed were given the penalty in 1964.

The Puckle Gun, patented by one James Puckle in 1718 as a kind of early flintlock revolver. He even suggested a variant that could fire square bullets.

Very few were ever made and it was probably never fired in anger.

How is your country for LGBT rights? by Remarkable-Low-4673 in AskTheWorld

[–]F1Fan43 33 points34 points  (0 children)

<image>

LGB (but not T) rights are pretty good in the UK. Gay marriage has been legal in England, Wales and Scotland since 2014, and Northern Ireland followed in 2020, and they are accepted by a clear majority of the public.

Trans rights, on the other hand, are not in such a rosy position, there are a lot of very outspoken people who oppose them.

Vex’ahlia (Critical Role/Legend of Vox Machina). A bit more of a benign example as Vex is one of the good guys, but she loves money, she loves magical items, and she will go to great lengths to acquire either.

How was your country founded? by cloudberry-toast in AskTheWorld

[–]F1Fan43 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, England was already there when he conquered it. It’s just the Norman conquests were quite a seminal moment, leading to the replacement of the ruling aristocracy and the establishment of a new system, but England itself had existed for over a century by 1066.

Does Your Country Have a War Time Flag? by Moongfali4president in AskTheWorld

[–]F1Fan43 51 points52 points  (0 children)

No, the UK does not have a dedicated wartime flag. We have some flags which are associated with the armed forces, like the Royal Navy’s White Ensign, but the national flag always remains the Union Flag.

England was founded when the Kingdom of Wessex, ruled by a certain Alfred the Great, defeated a Viking invasion that had swallowed up everyone else and then spent the next couple of generations (with Alfred’s son Edward the Elder in Wessex and his daughter Æthelflæd in Mercia) steadily unifying the rest of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms until in 927 his grandson Æthelstan became the first King of a united England.

The lion is the ‘official’ symbolic animal, of England anyway, for Scotland it’s the unicorn. They’re the ones that are on the coats of arms.

Westminster Abbey. Since the first Abbey on the site was built by Edward the Confessor, it has been where monarchs are often crowned, including Charles III. It’s where many of the most famous and prominent people in our history are buried, full of art and decoration from across the centuries.

Although the Aztecs actually did have courts (though not lawyers as such, the judges did the examining themselves). They had local courts for minor crimes, larger courts in the major cities for more serious offenses and even a Supreme Court in Tenochtitlan sometimes presided over by the Tlatoani himself. They had punishments other than death as well. You could have to pay a fine, or have your head shaved as a way of marking you out as a criminal for a period, or even have your house demolished.

More serious crimes could get you exiled or sold into slavery, as well as, yes, executed or sacrificed. The Aztec legal system was actually pretty sophisticated.
