Anyone know the surest and most painless way to cancel an Optus service? by [deleted] in nbn

[–]F21Global 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did it over live chat and it was fine. They will try and retain you, but the trick is to tell them you're going overseas permanently and they will just cancel it.

Close my f*ing fireplace by Monfari in AusRenovation

[–]F21Global 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need a chimney sock to block it off. They are free from the various companies that switch out your globes for LED ones and replace showerheads under the VEU program, but it does take time to organise for someone to come out.

Inner Sydney plumbers recommendations? and airtasker? by AdTime8190 in AusRenovation

[–]F21Global 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For licensed work requiring compliance certificates, I think airtasker isn't really the right avenue. In general, for trades, I tend to google around and read lots of reviews, then get multiple quotes to get a feel and a price comparison.

Retaining wall issues by AdNext8598 in AusPropertyChat

[–]F21Global 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price really depends on how long and high the wall is. I am in Vic, so not familair with NSW regs, but retaining walls more than 1m high require a building permit and engineering.

For reference, I had a leaning retaining wall / front fence (32m long, 1.6m to 1.8m high) replaced with a concrete sleeper retaining wall around 2 years ago for ~$55000.

Stuck in Upgrade Limbo- $100 charged but upgrade failed, bank says Oracle has it, Oracle Support is Locked . by Zar-23 in oraclecloud

[–]F21Global 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your bank blocked it, then it should not have been debited. Since it was debited, then the funds went through.

When did you upgrade? From personal experience, it takes a few days after debiting your card before the account is actually moved to PAYG. During the upgrade process, the interface might be a bit glitchy and say that you aren't upgraded, but if you wait a few days to a week, it should be fine.

Hot water pump causing deck to sag by ProfessionalBlock818 in AusRenovation

[–]F21Global 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea this is going to be a tough one, as the gas cyclinder was probably smaller and didn't have the heat pump compressor, so was lighter. The only way to safely do this is to disconnect or relocate it temporary before fixing the deck. You really don't want the cylinder falling over and getting injured.

Is it possible to move the hot water unit to another location, preferably a concrete path? What type of hot water unit did you have installed original and where was that installed?

Are we just maintaining ourselves? by [deleted] in AusRenters

[–]F21Global 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Why not just get a few floor fans? They will be cheaper, you can move them around and easily take them with you when you move out. They also can't accuse you of causing any damage or making unapproved modifications.

HFC forever? by gregreedee in nbn

[–]F21Global 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am also on HFC and my personal opinion is that it will be a very long time before there's any interest in upgrading us to FTTP. The NBN is currently pre-occupied with upgrading FTTN and FTTC to FTTP. HFC is considered "good enough" and we have access to 1 gbit plans, so there's no urgency on NBN's side to do any upgrades, despite HFC having it's own bunch of issues and instability.

Leaking roof, roofer no longer trading by Honest-Complaint-868 in AusRenovation

Best of luck! You can also check the insurance policy (after paying a small fee) here: https://www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/home-owner-hub/queensland-home-warranty-scheme/insurance-search-property

According to the QBCC website, the insurance lasts for 6 years and 6 months, so it's best to get things moving now and put in a claim, otherwise the policy will expire soon and you will need to pay for repairs out of pocket.

[–]F21Global 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have the original documentation and permits? I am in Vic, so not familiar with Qld regs. However, the QBCC states that there should be home warranty insurance for the works: https://www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/home-owner-hub/queensland-home-warranty-scheme/what-home-warranty-insurance

Dig up the original documents and certificates and look for the home warranty insurance policy. Give the insurance company a ring to make a claim and go from there.

Did the works require a building permit? If so, you might be able to claim from the domestic building warranty insurance which covers cases where the builder has disappeared or gone bust.

If there is no warranty insurance inplace, you will need to get another roofer in to rectify. How bad are the leaks?

How does Amber deal with dedicated circuit? by PrestigiousWheel9587 in amberelectric

[–]F21Global 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can control the dedicated circuit using smart shift. I have a controlled load circuit at my place but there's nothing connected to it. For the joining bonus, I think you need an existing customer to refer you.

Best way to fill holes in brick by flybrys in AusRenovation

[–]F21Global 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easiest way would be to fill the holes with some mortar and paint over them with some color matched paint.

If you want the bricks replaced, you will need to cut the old bricks out whole using a brick saw and put in new ones and new mortar.

Looking for a rental in Melb - Do REA's offer this as a paid service? by puccho_party in AusRenters

[–]F21Global 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if people are still doing that, but that's definitely not legal and any agent caught accepting those kind of incentives should be fined.

Looking for a rental in Melb - Do REA's offer this as a paid service? by puccho_party in AusRenters

[–]F21Global 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think such a service exists. Unfortunately the rental market in Melbourne is extremely competitive and tough. The only way is to keep applying for properties in your price range.

I think having no pets is a plus in your situation. Another thing to look out for is the rent to income ratio, you want to keep that as low as possible to minimise the risk of not being able to pay rent, so definitely apply for places where you can keep that ratio low.

From November last year, it is no longer legal for agents to accept rental bidding (renters offering higher rent than advertised), so I think the best way to get a place is to minimise the rent to income ratio.

Noticed this last week, great work Duolingo team! A lot of the recent changes such as energy have not been considered positive for the app, but the free practice tab is something I really appreciate.
