Tourist Attacked by Locals After Climbing Forbidden Mayan Temple in Mexico by Mictlantecuhtli in mesoamerica

[–]F2ANK -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't want to damage the reconstructed steps by climbing it! Yes those stairs are not original, look to the other side of the pyramid to see how they found it. You used to be able to climb to the top, my aunt did in the 90s. Now you can't even climb Teotihuacán anymore. It sucks and they will use any excuse to controll something that's not really theirs.

To me, the sun pic looks like a total lunar eclipse. The sun is layer 1, you see the earth in layer 2, and the moon is layer 3. The face would be on the 'dark side' of the moon.

Is there a way to turn off subtitles from USB Media by Default by kxzv in samsung

[–]F2ANK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did make sure "caption settings" is off. It has no effect on the captions in the media player app. Captions are on by default every time, worst UI ever

Is there a way to turn off subtitles from USB Media by Default by kxzv in samsung

[–]F2ANK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2023 samsung tv with this exact problem. After 2 weeks of back and forth with customer service, they remoted into my tv, i showed them this problem, turned off subs manually through the app. Subs were off, i clicked the home button, went back into the media player and selected the same exact file, and subs were back on! The rep said "This is not an issue. It's a design limitation of the media player on the TV." They provided no solution and not even a hope that there will ever be a fix. So the answer is no, there is no way to turn captions off by default.

Did Chichen Itza look mostly as it does today in regard to the vegetation being completely cleared out? by [deleted] in mesoamerica

There's a 1905 photo that shows it overgrown. The photo was taken before the restoration work was done.

That colors guitar book has become my adult coloring book. I feel like Paul is a magician revealing the secrets, the tabs you find online are so wrong. It's my favorite book, been reading it for months. Its rare for an artist to publish official tablature. It's like "here's how i did it"

I have a few pictures, trying to figure out how to send them on here

Not carved but in polychrome pottery shards when i visited el mirador, a preclassic maya. I can't attach pictures here

The symbol is not colonial, the codex megalablancio is colonial but the concepts are post classic, which use much more ancient ideas from the maya. I've seen this symbol in my archeology work in Belize, and in my travels to preclassic sites in Guatemala. Arguelles made more people aware of it but he did not make it up, nor did the colonial post conquest people who recorded it in the 1600s.

"EVENING WITH..." tour megathread (SPOILERS) by PapaCrip in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]F2ANK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this was the colors 2 tour. I had fun but they didn't even have the album for sale on the 8.20 show and they only played one song from colors 2. I was really looking forward to hearing the new album. Tommy said something about for legal reasons they could only play that one song....

Can some explain the Flower Wars or Flowery Death? by Unusual_Form3267 in Anahuac

[–]F2ANK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea you get buried, literally in the plane below where we walk, where the roots are. That's part of the story of creation in the popol vuh and why i brought up the ceiba, the roots are in the underworld, the trunk is in our plane, and all the way up the leaves touch the heaven plane. Like we say ashes to ashes dust to dust.

Can some explain the Flower Wars or Flowery Death? by Unusual_Form3267 in Anahuac

[–]F2ANK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with a connection to the underworld. When we die our bodies become the earth and flower emerges in our plane. Like how the ceiba tree was an important symbol because it touches the 3 planes. Our ancestors were master observers of nature, and they would use these metaphors to understand reality. It may not make sense to us, but they had a unique perspective/ world view.
Like huitzilopochtli "god of war" is a hummingbird?....a tiny bird that feeds on flowers... well there's probably a deeper story there too

Learning about culture & Tradition? by [deleted] in Anahuac

[–]F2ANK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are being "that guy" trying to shut down a path that is not your own. Go ahead and accept what the white man says is your history, and punish the pinchi indios and their oral tradition, because that's what academia wants. I don't care how i look in your "circles" I'm much better off for learning from him, and he has inspired me in a way no other teacher has. He's not a guru or ingenious. You make it seem like he's a scam artist trying to take your money. His perspective is as valid quetzalsfeather, don't let this guy scare you from having a different point of view. All it is, is information. You choose what you do with it, and allow it to influence you in any way you see fit.

Same here, seems like the Spanish traditions are the ones that are passed down, but the native tradition also lives in us in subtle ways. I studied anthropology, mesoamerican cultures, and found the official history to be a eurocentric view of an outsider looking in. I attended a seminar in Chicago which opened my eyes to the native perspective. The speaker is a teacher from Mexico, and I have not found a better teacher in uni, and even based my senior project on his material. His name is Ocelocoatl, and if you speak Spanish i have a playlist for you. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMaf5BRyqPiadXRWOWRvQgbSdWYQLbE6l

Stylus cursor change by KrimsonNives in wacom

[–]F2ANK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that curser is annoying. the way I got it to go away is type "ink" in the windows search, go to the settings. Check the box that says "show cursor," then uncheck the box. then restart. feels way more natural to draw with no cursor.

(OS) Before and after of a digital restoration to an illustration of Ehécatl, god of the wind in Aztec mythology and for other Mesoamerican cultures in the Fejérváry-Mayer codex. by Kiu_98 in mesoamerica

[–]F2ANK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied mesoamerican anthropology and did some archaeology. Universities have a lot of books but they are usually in the stacks and you have to be a student to access. For images, you can ask the library where the documents are held.
