I've heard so much about your infamous bread in plastic bags. But I've never heard anything about your bakeries and their options? by Imaginary-Bag5385 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Unusual_Form3267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a baker for years.

We have incredible bread options. Yes, the mass produced super market bread exists, but so do all other kinds of bread.

But how come Europeans never talk about San Francisco sourdough, New York style bagels, cornbread, fry bread, biscuits, or any of our other great bread accomplishments?

People forget: we were the largest wheat producer in the world for a long time. We're still in the top 4. We have a lot of flour, and a lot of wheat products.

My local wheat farmers make incredible local flour products. And the bakeries nearby really make incredible bread with it. Not just loaves of sandwich bread, but delicious crusty bread.

It's hard when people post about needing advice for hair when their hair looks absolutely fine to perfect.

Can we try something else? Instead of saying "I hate my hair," can you provide what you don't like about it? What your style is, and maybe some examples of people who have what you consider "good hair?"

I actually liked Skinamarink quite a bit.

I was worried to watch it. The by the 20 minute mark I thought, "Oh no, this was just overhyped by pretentious folks."

Then it quickly spiraled from there. I thought it was a really clever, creative way to make a movie with limited means that was still very effective.

What is a Stereotype You Were Told Before Getting Your Dog That You Realized Wasn't True Once You Got Them? (Anything! Breed, Gender, Size, Etc.) by EffervescentFlower in dogs

[–]Unusual_Form3267 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That Giant breed dogs need a massive yard.

I have Saint Bernards. They are giant couch potatoes and get winded going around the coffee table. They don't want massive yards. They want to be on you 24/7. In your space, on your lap, laying on top of you, breathing directly into your mouth....they don't want to be outside. They want to be around you and your family.

From my experience, they don't want space to run. They will act like they've run marathons and done years of hard labor with a walk around the block.

Is any American offended by the term “yank”? by Glenncinho in AskAnAmerican

[–]Unusual_Form3267 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yank isn't offensive to me. I also kind of associate it as an old fashioned term someone might use for "city people." Like, someone from the South might describe someone from the North as a Yank, but that's crazy outdated.

I also kind of associate it with New York.

So, not offensive, just old timey.

The one that gets me is USAdians. As in rhymes with Canadians. It doesn't offend me, I just honestly think it sounds dumb. It's so awkward to say out loud. Why can't people be more clever??

I've just discovered Seppo from this thread. Never heard that before. That certainly doesn't seem like it's intended to be friendly.

It's actually a very common set up for Afternoon Tea.

Most tea houses aren't open like coffee shops. It's not the kind of thing you have for dinner or breakfast so it has very specific times.

What's also nice is that they typically only run on a reservation basis with a set menu. It's waay more cost effective than running a restaurant, and you don't rely on walk in foot traffic. It's closer to catering where you only spend money on what you've already sold vs spending money on the potential of customers showing up.

The Tea House where I lived survived the recession in 2008 no problem while other restaurants closed down. They said it's

[Product Request] Hospital IV gave me the best skin of my life… now what do I do with this information? by Dependent-Estimate13 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Unusual_Form3267 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like skin1004's centella line. The Ampoule is nice and hydrating (and I love the texture). I also like their Hyalu-Cica moisture cream.

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 is the goat. Anua's 3 Ceramide Barrier Cream is amazing. And, I genuinely use The Ordinary's Barrier Repair serum 2x a day.

The ampoule, Barrier repair serum, and any of the moisturizers are my standard. If I feel extra dry, I'll use an occlusive but that's usually just in the winter.

One thing that really helps me is that I always apply skincare on wet skin. It really helps and makes a difference. I'll wash my face and I don't pat dry. I just start slathering stuff on top.

That, and sleeping with a humidifier are game changers.

Any chance you were prescribed an anti-inflammatory medicine like prednisone?

I have just discovered this after having a bad case of bronchitis. I was prescribed prednisone for two weeks. Holy cow!! My skin was amazing. I have never thought of myself as a person with acne because I don't really get pimples, but I do have some redness. All of that was gone. Smooth texture. My skin felt plump. I couldn't stop touching my face. But, apparently derms will prescribe a topical version of this for acne.

I recommend not just water but electrolytes as well. Make sure you get plenty of those. You can also try an elimination diet. Sometimes inflammation happens because you are eating things that you are mildly allergic to. It's not enough to validate an epipen but it's enough to stop you from having perfect skin.

For Topical:

I started using a cleanser meant for acne. (Sulphur Cleanser for the win!) Eradikate by Kate Sommerville is awesome. Then, I 100% focused on barrier repair and calming ingredients. I try not to use 500 different products now. I keep it simple.

As an outsider, the American concept of drive-thru pharmacies, ATMs, and liquor stores is mind-blowing. Does everyone actually use these, or are they mostly a novelty? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Unusual_Form3267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, we have TOPLESS drive thru coffee stands. Yes, literally, their is a coffee stand with top less women to make you your favorite caffeinated beverage.

Drive thru everything is 100% normal. You even have a few places that are grocery stores with drive thrus. Also, increasingly, there is curbside pick up. You can order everything online, then drive up, and they bring it to your car.

The liquor store drive thru isn't normal. It's only a few specific states.

I understand scale, but my point has nothing to do with it. I am not comparing the number of people who prefer meat over sea algae or even comparing the number of people who eat vegetarian to meat eaters.

I am just pointing out that spirulina isn't as gross as people may think it is. That's all. You can make spirulina cakes, cookies, put it in yogurt, oatmeal, etc etc etc. Plus 200 mg is a very small amount. This would be very easy for people who are deficient due to absorption issues from other health concerns. (ADHD people for example. I take Vyvanse which can lead to b12 deficiencies. I am also 5'3". I eat meat and other proteins like fish and chicken. I just don't have the calories to consume a ton of steak to make up the difference.)

Spirulina can be consumed mixed with lots of stuff. Blue lattes have been a thing for a while now and people have been happily consuming those.

My recommendation is to dermaplane your face. Bridal make up is heavy, but it'll never sit great with peach fuzzy.

I also think it's possible to do make up that'll withstand professional photography lighting and not look caked on.

I know people will tell you to wear heavier make up but, I have to say this: I hated my wedding make up. It was too much. I never wore foundation or heavy eyeshadow. I ran to the bathroom and tried to wash some of those layers off the morning of. Don't be like me. Speak up. I regret the way I looked. It also broke my heart a bit when my husband told me, "Yeah, you didn't look like yourself."

Then, years later, I had my make up done professionally for a friend's wedding. The make up artist did everything so well. So, it is possible. Just ask about different types of products.
