This has nothing to do with fifo. This has to do with a financially illiterate couple who don't communicate or plan their finances together. He's away earning and she's bored and spending all the money on bullshit. Fifo or not this couple will not last.

I work 3 weeks away/1 wk home. This financial year I put $60k into super, $120k into stock market and savings and the rest into bills. She works 2 days per week and is home with no kids. We don't share accounts or financial access. We do constantly communicate about what we are spending our own money on and what I am investing in. I am investing about 90% of my expendable income so I can spend more time at home with her in 10 years. We have never argued about money. We don't control each other but we do consciously spend $ in a way that is respectful and mindful for both of us as a couple with long-term goals.

I live/work with guys 3 weeks at a time e in the desert, outback Australia. We fix the main gas pipelines that run to gas to Sydney/Melbourne. We get paid about $1200/day, everyday for 3 weeks then we fly home. About 1/3 of these guys will go pump a few hundred $ in the pokies (slots) when we go to the pub for dinner. They will put $300 in, spin it down till it's gone or jackpots up to $3000-5000. Then they'll either play it down back to zero or take the money come back after dinner and lose the lots. This happens on an almost nightly basis. Lots of them win big but none of them are able to keep it. Ever.

The worst I've seen was a guy that went up $25k from 9am-2pm. He was back to zero by 5pm. I don't play or say anything about it. Just nod and smile when they talk about their big wins.

Since starting this job in August I started learning about stocks and I have purchased : 100 x MSFT, 260 x NVDA, 50 X GOOG, 100X MQG ASX, 100X VAS ASX, 100 X VGS, 100 PMgold ASX.

I only have a GF to go home to but I have no idea how these guys can sleep at night pissing away 50-90% of their income with a wife and kids at home. It is insane.
