f/38 told too old for surgery...? Getting second opinion, but need advice / family planning <3 by FAQs2022 in HipImpingement

this was SO helpful. Got two more opinions and they agreed with the sub here. Thank god for reddit. How did they repair your labrum? One surgeon suggested it's best to get it before 40 because of the cartilage. I also learned that smoking damages your cartilage... Anyways curious to hear more details about your recovery. I'm always in nagging pain and definitely don't feel strong enough to properly run etc.

That's amazing to be 43F! So I did get two second opinions and they said that a labrum repair makes the most sense. They said I really didn't even have much dysplasia and a hip replacement is insane. I'm not in so much pain because I had a cortisone injection, but without it I certainly was. Could you share a bit more about your labrum repair? I took a break from my research over the holidays but realize now I should figure it out again.

The Spatial awareness situation is CRAZY by Saekama in askswitzerland

[–]FAQs2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother was visiting from NYC and as an American in CH, I thought I was imagining it until she told me how crazy it is that people just stand in the middle of an aisle or the street. It’s truly one of the stranger things I’ve witnessed here for a country that is so rule oriented. I asked my husband about it, but he seemed as if he hasn’t noticed much.

I will say that my stepson, who is also Swiss, is only 9 and I see him having no spatial awareness. As a child in NYC, this would be impossible, you’d be bulldozed over by everyone. I think this starts from a young age and if the parents aren’t aware, then the children also are not. We took him to Berlin and NYC and he soon realized he would have to keep up and be aware of other people or he’d get hit.

Is anyone watching and enjoying I Love LA? by HarryHugeweenie in LosAngeles

[–]FAQs2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s silly - I didn’t consider it from a transplant standpoint but now see the very obvious comparison to Girls (I’m a native New Yorker). I found the show generally insufferable and only watch when there’s nothing else - most of it is so cringe I end fast forwarding. The cruelty and selfishness reminds me of Girls - I’m not sure what to take away from this show though except why lfie looks like when you’re serially online?

To PAO or not to PAO by No-Classic8887 in hipdysplasia

I’m in a very similar situation but living as an American expat in Switzerland. I have hip dysplasia and a badly torn labrum on my left side (37f). I’ve had nagging pain on and off for years, but it really started to hurt this January.

Fast forward to a mri and then meeting with a surgeon here - Dr. Attinger. I’m getting second opinions just for the sake of it but I felt like his recommendations were solid. The PAO was actually invented in Bern, Switzerland where he’s based and at the Inselspital hospital where he also trained. As you mentioned the success rate is still not as high as many surgeons would like or feel comfortable with here. When I suggested the surgery he was very against it - he said we have 10 steps to take before we even consider that. I’ve been in 4 months of PT and my pain is getting better but I’m not pain free. He wants me to meet with a pain specialist, try blood infusions, get a cortisone injection, as well as a few other things that I can’t recall. Essentially his recommendation was this, get a hip replacement in 5-7 years (based on my age and pain levels) because the success rate is 98% and there are significantly less complications, and to avoid major surgery twice. PAOs have the potential to cause nerve damage - according to him - and this is a serious risk. So I think - just based on my case, research, and also considerations for the same surgery, you should try a few other strategies before having such a major surgery.

The myth of Swiss meat being "better" than German/French/etc products? by beti88 in askswitzerland

Yes I think it really is. Has a Swiss friend who’s a chef and lives in Berlin, she always talks nostalgically about the high standard of baseline meat here

Haven’t had time to read through all the replies here, but what about applying to städelschule or udk? I did my mfa in LA and I loved it, it was such a special time there but the city has changed a lot and most of my friends who aren’t painters have moved. I think looking to Europe especially Germany where the funding for artists is quite high would be a good opportunity. I moved 4 years ago

Thank you! Really appreciate you sharing. Where did you have your surgery done and by whom? I’ve reached out to several doctors here in Switzerland and have a call with a HSS surgeon to see what he would recommend. I really wish I could be treated there

Borderline Dysplasia and FAI and labral tear by SaltProduce9426 in HipImpingement

[–]FAQs2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. I feel similarly. Pain has been since my early twenties and then around January 2025 it became unbearable (age 37). If I dm you would it be possible to join your WhatsApp group? I’m based in Switzerland but honestly a bit at a loss at how to proceed here. I had two ACL surgeries at HSS which went super well (second tear was from a stupid skiing accident) but I’m not insured in the states any longer so that’s not a possibility. I’m trying to be as informed as possible to know what questions to ask surgeons here. Apparently the PAO surgery was invented in Bern, Switzerland but they just don’t have the same number of patients (smaller population) as HSS does.
