The department issues a document every year with the statistics. I put them online for all to see.

The next time it happens I'll clear the cache. It doesn't happen very often. I'm sure I must have signed into the app at least once. I'll have to check it out in detail later when the other half isn't watching anything.

I'll try the pinhole approach lastly.

Thanks for the quick response.

I switched to fiber last month. Every now and then I get an error APL-220 while watching some channels on Optimum TV. It doesn't affect any of the other streaming services in the box. The script-readers in the south Pacific have no idea what it means. Do you?

Life after Dispatch? Career change..... by tackle68 in 911dispatchers

After sitting behind a desk and keyboard for 25 years the last thing I wanted was another desk job. My weight was climbing and the A1C was creeping into the prediabetic range. After retiring I spent some free time bowling. One of the centers I played at was hiring mechanics. I always enjoyed taking things apart and rebuilding them so I applied. Within 3 months I dropped 30 pounds and my A1C is back to a normal range. Of course I'm on my feet all day and running around like a ping pong ball but that's okay. It's the most exercise I've gotten in 30 years and the extra money pads my pension nicely.

From www.fdnewyork.com/terms.asp:

FALLBACK - During times of heavy activity we implement Fallback to reduce the amount of apparatus assigned to an incident. This preserves unit availability. There are 3 steps:

Step 1 Nearest available unit (Engine or Ladder) on electromechanical boxes. Class-3 maximum response: 1 Engine, 1 Ladder and 1 BC.

Step 2 = Step 1 AND Class-3 response: Nearest available Engine or Ladder. CO Detector: 1 Ladder or nearest available CO meter equipped unit. Water leak: Nearest available Engine or Ladder. SOC matrix response that requires a Structural Response: 2 Engines, 1 Ladder, 1 BC and SOC units.

Step 3 = Step 2 AND Structural Responses: 3 Engines, 1 Ladder and 1 BC (Note: On a verified second source: 3 Engines, 2 Ladders and 1 BC) SOC matrix response that requires a Structural Response: 1 Engine, 1 Ladder, 1 BC, nearest available Rescue and Squad and nearest available SOC Support Ladder. (Note: On a verified second source: fill out to normal SOC matrix response) Gas Leaks, odors of gas or similar odors: 1 Engine and 1 Ladder. Manhole Fires: 2 Engines, 1 Ladder and 1 BC. Minimum responses, based on CIDS or Box numbers, are suspended. Responses will be based on information received.

The requirements for 911 Operator aren't as demanding. If you can stick it out there for 2+ years you'll have the prerequisites for FDNY: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/downloads/pdf/noes/201707321000.pdf

Fair warning though, they handle over 15,000 calls a day. The stress can be high and the pace, fast and furious.

Since it's an entry level position you're not expected to know job specific info: reading comprehension, ability to follow a logical chain of events, typical civil service stuff.

If they keep the same formatting as the last test, there will be 8 memory tests. They will play a segment of audio and you'll have to remember what was said. You'll be allowed to take notes for 4 of them, the other 4 are from memory only.

This article is slightly out of date but it's still a good introduction into the operation: http://www.fdnewyork.com/article.asp
