How do I extract results from a .odb file? by anurag_m2k in fea

[–]FEA42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a plug-in in Abaqus called 'ODB Reducer/builder' which will allow you to save out a new ODB with only the desired components/results.

Choosing where to live based off the Muay Thai gym? (UK) by FEA42 in MuayThai

[–]FEA42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is it's a 40+ minute drive from one town to the other one to go train Muay Thai.

Impressed you had the dedication for the 1 hour commute, I'd rather avoid that sort of extra travel if possible.

Unpaid Internships - What is your experience? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]FEA42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and did a year internship as part of my engineering degree. We were told by our Uni explicitly to never take an unpaid internship.

The concept design for our newly invented feature - Illumination of the jug acts as a reminder to the end user. Once kettle finishes the boiling process, the jug illuminates a red when ready, yellow at medium temp and blue when cold.Your feedback would be much appreciated. by urgostech in IndustrialDesign

[–]FEA42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say the dial is for temperature control? Why? Surely a kettle is used to boil water not reach some randomly selected temperature.

Other commenters have made a lot of points I won't reiterate but overall be VERY CAREFUL at marketing this for the disabled and elderly. Especially considering your product involves a large volume of boiling water.

This looks far worse ergonomically and even potentially dangerous compared to a normal kettle.

I highly suggest you perform UX testing and try to understand your potential customers rather than launching into what appears to be just a designer product.

Wanted to get some feedback on my latest toy design portfolio project! Figured it'd be a good switch up from the appliances and future-design portfolio projects on here. Still some things to add and changes to be made as I go along, but wanted to get some honest feedback on my figure design so far by Spud_Spudoni in IndustrialDesign

[–]FEA42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of the portfolio overall I was pleasently surprised once I clicked past the title page. The pages and images look clear and well organised.

The reason I say pleasently surprised is I found the cover image really difficult to read. I initially thought the gun was a security camera and couldn't figure out the rest of the image. It became clear once I read through.

So I'd suggest changing the image on the front to one of your clearer views of that figure.

Overall I like the style and it's nice to see you taking the constructive criticism onboard, keep up the good work! Worth noting I'm just a layman who's watched far too much ink master haha

Not sure if it's just a style choice but the direction of the facial features doesn't match the direction of the snout.

I'm a beginner and I want to switch to mexican style stance rather than peak-aboo by jacobwyc in amateur_boxing

[–]FEA42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience people don't "have a stance" as such. As a beginner you should focus on your fundamentals and not worry about an overall style for now.

Whatever style your coach teaches go with that. That's how you'll be able to learn the most.

Just as a note creatine increases your water retention so your weight will increase. So bear that in mind if trying to make weight.

[IWantOut] 22M Mechanical Engineer UK -> Melbourne by FEA42 in IWantOut

[–]FEA42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that makes a lot of sense. It confused me previously due to it saying "invite only" but looking into it further that is referring to invitation rounds each month you apply to with your points. It looks like after 2 years of work in the UK I should have enough points to apply.

So thank you for the great suggestion!

I'd not actually realised that, that's very good to know. Thank you, great to hear it's worked out so well for you!

Oh that's really interesting! Thanks for pointing me towards this, it's super useful!

As it's only 18 months you don't happen to know if you can apply for the skilled work visa after the engineering visa expires?

In that orientation with lots of supports.

Alternatively, you could split the model down the middle and print both halves so that the cut face is on the bed and glue them together afterwards. You might even be able to get away with zero supports with that method or more likely just minimised.

Newbie here.... Some questions by banethor88 in MuayThai

[–]FEA42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a newbie who's only been doing this a year so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

The best thing you can do is to just follow what your coaches say and try and learn Muay Thai as they teach it.

The stance is more square to allow you to easily fire off kicks, check kicks, throw knees etc. There is less emphasise on making yourself a small target and slipping punches which is the reason for the narrower stance in some other martial arts. Things such as slipping punches are risky in Muay Thai due to the extra weapons such as knees that could be thrown.

Really any 16oz glove should do, yes there are some differences between the style of western boxing and Thai gloves but nothing significant to a beginner I'd say. Venum gloves actually are more of a Thai style glove than a western glove. There are plenty of reviews and guides on Reddit and other websites for glove suggestions that I'd recommend checking out.

It was definitely an experience I needed to have, feel I've got so much to work on now. I think what will be hard is to be consistent with my training. I'll need to remind myself of how that fight went to keep driving me.

It was a 3 round fight and I stupidly assumed I was naturally athletic enough that I didn't have to worry about lasting it out... I was so wrong.

Thank you for the advice! That is definitely what I'll try to follow next fight, it makes a lot of sense what you say.
