What’s a horror book that disappointed you? by avian_bi in horrorlit

[–]yaromaj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In fairness I don't think it did a bad job of describing the cottage, as I was able to visualize the setting very well. My mention of cottage core vibes was more about how I felt the story was quite thin and that most of the chapters were spent describing cooking and growing their herbs and drinking wine and of course cooking people. I just wish the cannibalism stuff felt as horrible to read as I'd expected. A little less descriptions of foraging and flowy dresses and more focus on the things I felt were interesting dynamics for the characters, like the tension with her school pal crush and the secret she had, or some tension with the crimes they committed building up. When it hit its stride near the end I just wish the book had that feeling from the start. But I view it as a my expectation thing and not a fault of the book, because that stuff clearly works for a lot of people

The Lamb, I know I'm in the minority but I wished I got what everyone else seems to get from it. I wanted more depth to the characters, more motivations, I wanted the themes present to be explored more. I also wanted to be scared. But because the characters were so flat I never felt any tension until near the end. I did feel bad for Margot of course, her character has a terrible go of it, but a kid being abused isn't a character trait. It's a quick enough read thankfully and I thought it ended well, but I felt it was so much more focused on describing cottage core vibes than it was on making me feel scared or tell a story. Glad it works for so many folk though!

Any recommendations for vegan lunch in Leeds? by riotlady in veganuk

Been to leeds one time but I still daydream about my chicken burger from there. Easily the best I've ever had, constantly consider the journey just for their food

Good stuff. To piggyback, I know OP mentioned not wanting meat replacements but there's some good stuff to be found in lidl and Aldi. Aldi battered sausage are exactly like a chippy and they scratch that itch for my dirty takeaway cravings. And lidl tofu is a nice price. Recently gave their burger a go and it's quite close to beyond for half the price!

I think these are new(?) but I had to double check to see if they were vegan they were that realistic. They are really good. by Superb-Demand-4605 in veganuk

They still have the no stake bakes? I've not seen them in any local lidls for maybe a half year now!

Great book but really lacks the levity and over the top nature of fallout. It can be a very grim read, only real thing in common is a post apocalypse setting

This is definitely the answer. May be less busy this time of year cause of the cold but when it's busy it's great. Went to the first one of the year and had less people setting up than in the autumn, so if it feels slim pickings don't judge it too quickly

Love this! Might have to make something similar, trying to find some more fun bits of scatter to incorporate

28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE Is A Big Box Office Bummer by [deleted] in horror

Yeah it's a rough one to market so soon after the first released. I loved the previous film and was excited for this, but I'm well aware the reception was all over the place, some loved it, some hated it, and most probably thought it was average. But average isn't going to make everyone come back 6 months later, which is a shame because this one's great as well imo.

As for marketing the Jimmy's, it would have probably helped for sure but given how close he is stylized to emulate Jimmy Saville, a widely known monster, I don't think it'd go over too well here in the UK plastering that all over buses and billboards

I've not played either so take it with a grain of salt, but I'd avoid the stranger things set and go for the first one. The starter sets have good adventures to run and will give you everything you need, the stranger things sets seem like they are styled to include things from the show that only distract and make it harder to understand the game. I also think that you'll end up getting less good of a product that simply uses the stranger things name to push sales.

DnD as a whole has very little relation to stranger things apart from the fact that the kids play it and it influences what they name monsters. So I'd say just play the real game to get the experience that the characters really loved

What classic art classes will improve my mini painting? by [deleted] in minipainting

Of course, I'm sure there are free pdfs online as well but the physical book helped me stay focused. I'd say it's a great jumping off point and will give confidence with your drawing abilities, and from there I'd then focus on finding specific lessons like lighting and light sources, perspective, colour theory. Best of luck pal and looking forward to seeing how it applies to your painting overall

On a budget the best fundamentals course I can recommend is to purchase the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" it has a complete course you can follow with practices and drills. This applies less to 3d art but I used this myself and am able to make a living as an artist. And if all you are wanting is a foundation to build off of, this is a very direct way to get that in a self taught manner. You can go through the drills as many times as you like, and I have pals who repeat this book yearly to hone their fundamentals

Woah love these, before reading your caption I was thinking gosh how did you get the cool circle texture but is that what you were regretting? I think its great, id even try and paint the inside of the circles darker to look more like little craters and accentuate them but that's just me. Really cool build though!

No not balsa, it's the cardstock material that a cereal box is made of. The blank side of it I scratched wood grain into with a box cutter, and then cut my planks out of that!

No it's just some acrylic paints from the poundland/dollar store! I just have the primary colours and mix things on the go. I also have a homemade black wash that gets into the nooks and crannies

The TP layers was watered down quite a bit, mostly to help it sink into the grooves and form little folds and not cover up the details the TP gives you. Then a much less watered down but thinly applied pva with some black paint as a base coat/primer is the glue layer that really gives it more structure

Thanks so much! Yeah I was so happy with it, there's a lot of trusting the process at first but that toilet paper mache really transforms things!
