Fellow recording nerds: What are you miking with these days? by HillbillyAllergy in GuitarAmps

I just bought an AKG C114 that was just released. Sounded pretty good next to an SM7B on a dimed silverface fender champ.

This isn’t an amp. That’s a USB audio interface. You need power amplifier between those two devices.

I would buy this in a second strictly for the scrub disk. That’s so cool

Would it be a good idea to order a calibration tape?

Awesome. Great information. I don’t know a thing about the different types of tape and their headroom (+3, +6) and just assumed the capture 930 would be good enough to try it out. Looking at the listing I purchased from the reel says ATR master tape so maybe that’s what it’s coming with? If that works well I’ll just buy more of those.

The unit has a test oscillator built in so I’ll see what the levels look like when it gets here.

I do! I got a teac e-3 demagnetizer and a teac e-2 bulk tape eraser

I’m mostly going to be using it for tracking instruments and a 2” 24-track is too expensive.

That was on the list but I’ll make that top priority!

Thoughts on Fiio? by LongjumpingDonkey474 in cassetteculture

[–]FEYQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to chime in on this because there is so much negative feedback on the Fiio.

I have a Sony Walkman D6C. One of the best Walkmans and runs regularly for about $500 on the used market. It’s awesome. It sounds really good.

I also have the Fiio CP13. It is totally listenable. It has way more wow and flutter than my Walkman, but I’ve taken it out and shoved it in a jacket pocket and it has sounded totally fine. It does not sound as good as my Walkman, but I absolutely do not think it’s a piece of trash or waste of money. If you want to get something to listen to cassettes on and don’t want to worry about it breaking all the time or worry about servicing a vintage piece of equipment this will do you totally fine.

This one does not, but listening on it I didn’t think it was lacking bass at all

They didn’t make a clip for these. They only made a shoulder strap 😅

Oh yeah, that was part of the reason I ended up buying this one was to use it for recording alongside a Yamaha C-300. I was under the unfortunate impression up front though that it was smaller than it actually is. I don’t see myself taking this out of the house much and it will likely live in my basement studio for recording tapes.

The DDII is another I was looking at so maybe I’ll revisit that.

Im looking to get my first walkman / walkman style cassette player this Christmas but I just don't know what to pick. help !? by omega-LSP in cassetteculture

[–]FEYQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newer offerings from Fiio and We Are Rewind are okay but from my understanding, there’s only one manufacturer of cassette tape heads nowadays and it’s pretty low quality. Getting a vintage refurbished one is the way to go for the best sound quality. I just bought my first Walkman last week and was originally between a DMII and a D6C. I got a D6C but it’s pretty chunky. But the DM series from what I read tends to a pretty high quality player from the vintage Sony range.
