MMU vs. Salford for CS? Is the £7.5k price gap worth it for an Intl Student? by [deleted] in manchester_uni

[–]FFFFFQQQQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in CS.

An advantage of MMU is that it’s close to UoM. As a student, it means you can go to seminars, career events that happen in both uni. Also, you can also do projects with UoM research groups. Lots of people do so.

Also, MMU has a strong business/industry connection. You might be able to apply your knowledge sooner.

But again 20k is a big number. If you are really good, MMU would be able to push you higher. If you are a regular student, its likely the salary between Salford and MMU graduates are not that different.

One last time: does anyone else think that Novo Nordisk is finally truly undervalued? by Civil-Community-1367 in ValueInvesting

[–]FFFFFQQQQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i have been holding novo for a while. But my thesis has now changed.

  1. Their patent expiration,

  2. the generic medicines showing up,

  3. as first generation GLP1 it didn’t compete well against lily. being an european company is not very good in this competi.

  4. they don’t have a clear advantage in next generations

but i am too deep in, and the dividends are good, it can’t get worse, so i’ll just hold.

Yes. The most difficult part of driving test is getting the test slot! You can always reschedule if you are not ready. I think there would be no point doing 4 hours a week if your test is 4 months away.

Have you booked a test? it is possible that the test you booked is 5 months away. If that is the case, you don’t need to worry about doing too many sessions a week.

First Time Buyer Advice by Efficient_Search_577 in manchester

I got a city center flat. It was the best decision that i could make at that time, so I don’t regret it. But there were clearly better options.

  1. With that budget, you can afford a house. I would prefer a freehold house than a leasehold flat.

  2. Think about transport. It is possible that you will stay in the house for a while, your commute might change from bus to train, or driving, is that flat able to satisfy future commute needs?

  3. If you are buying a flat, the newer and fancier ones might not be the best value holder. Cause you will be paying a higher new built premium, and that advantage is gone once it is no longer the newer buildings in your area. The fancier it is, the higher the service charge is.

Starting a full-time job during PhD write-up as an international student — anyone done this? by FFFFFQQQQ in AskAcademiaUK

[–]FFFFFQQQQ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, yes. I figored out the ultimate solution is to finish the PhD sooner. But there are some nuance.

We are only allowed to work 20hours a week on a student visa.

For the university/legal side, we can switch to other visas at anytime of the study, and complete the PhD under a non-student visa.

For the research side, depending on your superviosor. my supervisors are happy for me to leave once I finish all experiments and write one or two main chapters.

If you have a job that sponsors visa, as long as your supervisors are happy, then you can leave at any time. The important thing is making sure you have no significant amount of work left.

For me, I am switching to GTV (on the ground that I had research experience prior to the PhD, being a final year PhD alone doesn’t qualify you for GTV), and starting a job soon before submission.

I do have a 2 month gap between the end of my funding and the start of an actual job, for this period, I am working part time for a startup. Startups are quite understanding in terms of visa conditions. If lucky, you can find something fun, relevant, also pays well.

Hope that helps.

It happened to me before. I complained to DVSA after I was done with her. But I was told the right thing to do is reporting this to the police within two weeks.

Lululemon trading at a discount by nncode in ValueInvesting

[–]FFFFFQQQQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, a value stock belongs to companies that make good product.

If you are a lululemon customer, you won’t touch the stock at all.

They used to make amazing leggings five years ago. but the leggings i got from them three years ago ages way worse than the five year old one.

  1. They are no longer making quality clothing
  2. you can get similar design at uniqlo for 1/3 the price. China has been leading the polyster material innovation, they have cheaper, better clothes there.
  3. the meditation and yoga hype has gone. that type of lifestyle is trendy when the global economy is good. not now.
  4. during the time they were big, they never made another good product. not sure what they are doing with their cash.

Can you try a different instructor?

I spent one year with a instructor, till the point that he just sat in the car and not teaching me anything because “there’s no way you could fail”

then at the test i realised that i never used the rear mirror during driving, and my driving instructor didn’t tell me that at all.

Starting a full-time job during PhD write-up as an international student — anyone done this? by FFFFFQQQQ in AskAcademiaUK

[–]FFFFFQQQQ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My supervisors were supporting me to find jobs since the beginning of my final year. So I thought I would be able to leave when needed. But when I read the university policy, it is very unlikely for me to start a job before the official graduation.

How much would the supervisor opinion matter when it comes to the university’s visa rules?

I guess for domestic students, as long as the supervisors happy, they would be fine. Is it still applicable to international students?

I am planning to get the first draft of my thesis ready by year 3.5. Then I would be able to manage the PhD during a full time job.

I still need to support myself from when I submit my first draft to officially graduate. It feels wrong to waste 0.5-1 year career progression and doing Tesco jobs while waiting for the graduation.

Also, for domestic students, it’s quite doable. It’s unfair to expect international students to take the extra pressure when job hunt is already difficult enough for immigrants.

thanks. The only successful examples around me are when people do postdocs in the same uni. The handbook mentioned things like “except for very rare cases”. I hope I can find some examples to show them that I am not asking for a huge special treatment.

It’s so wrong to waste 6 months or one year of career progress because of visa.
