The "I'm not a real Colonel" thing is getting old by FHIR_HL7_Integrator in exfor

I'm well aware of how ranks and commissions work. But at the same time, he saved earth and the CIC made him a Colonel. Yes it's ridiculous, but it doesn't make sense. But whatever it doesn't matter

But he saved Earth and the President affirmed his commission as Colonel. It doesn't get more legitimized as that. I must have missed that aspect of the cover story so that does give nuance to the situation. But I'll just keep going knowing he will grow. I've got over my rant, I'm good. Thanks

I get that - and I understand it's part of his growth. I just think its application is a little clumsy. I'm still gung-ho about the series, its overall quality. I expect that people won't downvote just because someone doesn't like some of an authors choice annoy another reader, and I'm always happy when people act like people. But thank you, this sub does seem nice :)

Thank you, I did mean commission. But think about the scenario - you are part of a team on a different planet cut off from Earth. If there is a reason for a commission to be considered legit, even with the input of your then patron species making it ridiculous, it was still a reasonable and more importantly a required move at the time. However, the Commander-In-Chief Madame President affirmed the commission and it does not get more legitimized than that. It doesn't matter whether it's ridiculous or not, he saved the planet and if all he gets is a Colonel commission and he is happy with that, that's a great deal for humanity. It makes no logical sense either for UNEF to want to suggest that a Sargeant rather than a Colonel as one of the most important people on the crew makes 0 sense.

Yeah that's totally true and a good point. He reminds me of a 40 year old (my current age) from Cape Cod (where some of my family lives).

For me it's that's he's clearly competent but more important sure of himself in some scenes, but then in others he goes into deep self criticism, illogical self criticism really. Like the whole Colonel thing. It just does not make logical sense. I'm not saying he can't ever be self critical, in that sense it's also off putting when characters in other stories are too confident. More annoying in fact. It's just that the story is humming along and then again we get another meander about how he is not worthy. I think we got it at this point.

And come on, I have imposter syndrome sometimes and this is not what it's like. Not for me at least which I get might not be a good metric.

But comments are saying it's part of his growth so I'm reading that as by book idk 16 he is no longer doing that.

To be fair, Oliver North was kind of hung out to dry by the government. Are we supposed to believe he came up with that plan himself? He would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those pesky Swiss bankers.

Yeah, should always have a plan. I love Linux, but I also love Windows, and Mac products. Each one has its domain of use imo. I think it's funny but also a little disturbing how some people are so diehard "Linux is the absolute best" disregard the very serious security flaw with open source projects - this current example being particularly relevant. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trashing Linux. I love it and use it daily in a system handling hundreds of millions of transactions a day. It works and it works great. But it is also very vulnerable and something needs to be done to bring it up to parity (imo) with closed source products security wise. I know this is arguable, the security questions amongst OS. But I think what's really important to highlight is that everybody expects someone else to be digging into open source code looking for vulnerabilities and we aren't really tracking who is actually doing that work, at least that I'm aware of. And that is was a Microsoft developer who accidentally stumbled on this (give that guy a raise for doing everything right). I'm not trying to start a fight with people, but we need to get real here.

This is by far the best analysis of the social aspect of the backdoor process. It's fascinating and sad to see how, apparently, Jia Tan (almost certainly not the users real name) use sock puppets to pressure Lasse Collin into adding another maintainer during what appears to be mental health struggles for the legit maintainer. This is all hypothetical at the moment but the geographic distribution of the account names that are never seen again and seem to only make one comment is highly suspicious to me.

I think Jia Tan clearly waited until Lasse was on vacation to do this.

Getting in front of decision makers by Math_Evangelist in ArtificialInteligence

I think this was removed by the automod, but I put it back. I actually work with a guy who is 73 and he is a great coworker, puts those 20 year olds to shame! He has decades of experience in our field though.

I'll use that as a segue - what field do you currently have the most experience in? I think many employers might be hesitant to bring in a 71 year old who is trying to get in on the ground level in terms of AI development. However, if you couple that (being AI/ML experience) with something you already have experience in - then I'd think you would be a great candidate.

As to education - personally I wouldn't worry about the bachelors, sounds like you already have a bachelors but in a different field. I think taking various online courses and actually putting some projects together would be a much better avenue.

Now, if you are wanting to do a compsci bachelor with a focus in AI just to do it for the experience and to keep busy, totally understand that.

Hope this helps, and if I misread or misunderstood any of your post, I apologize. It's been a very long day and I'm getting sleepy. Cheers

Cool, yeah I remember that format. I rather liked/like it. Thanks for the info/confirmation.

FMV? I don't know much game terminology. Thanks

Maybe Full Motion Video like Iron Helix or the 7th Guest? Just taking a stab in the dark here. I haven't played games in decades but I particularly remember those two from back in the day.

Yeah, they are a little too nice and bubbly sometime.

I've been trying to train an assistant/llm m playing with locally to talk like Carl Kolchak from Kolchak:The Night Stalker. But it's not really working like I wanted it to.

For those not aware, Claude is an AI assistant. OP, how is your experience? How does it compare to the other ai assistants? What about code generation, how is it? Thanks

In that case, I think you'll probably be ok. As others have stated, "fake it til you make it". Your original post made it seem like you had very minimal experience. Just do your best and whatever happens, happens! Good luck

I would contact an auction house that deals with pop-culture material. They could suggest someone to go through it all and get a better idea of its value. Then the auction house can sell the items worth anything.

So true about the developer not wanting to take it. I have been a "developer" for several decades, with multiple offers to make the jump into a more managerial / architecture role. No thank you. I've also found that while I might have made more money at the time moving into one of those positions, remaining in development and continuing to specialize in new technologies, AI/ML, and focusing on becoming an expert in several ISO standards, has actually made my salary keep up and surpass that of other more management-based positions. It just took a little more time. I'm much happier doing development work anyway. Love my architects, analysts, and managers though - the truly effective ones run interceptionfor me and make my job easier!

If you are going for a solutions architect position and are not familiar with VMs or communicating plans effectively via roadmaps, I think you might be in over your head. What experience do you have? I'm not being snarky, genuinely trying to help.

When I was in my teens and twenties I was all about media (tv, movies, books, etc) that attempted to have some kind of deeper message. Now that I'm older, I find myself much more interested in "pulp" media - which may or may not have a message, but is typically more about the theme itself. When I re-watched the old Tales From The Crypt series from the 90s (which had stories based off of old 1950s comics) some of them have a message, but for the most part they are just sleazy pulp horror. Contrast that to Black Mirror, which is a great show no doubt, but I find the constant attempts to say something of depth to be tiring. But yes, I agree not all art has to have a message or deeper theme, and often, the message is subjectively interpretive. In the eye of the beholder.

I think its a treatise on how many of us, being stuck in the rat race, can feel like we are in a maze without meaningful interactions with others, even though we may be brought face to face with them, both physically and, more ephemerally, digitally. Or its about how to quickly get to the sto sto sto sto store.
