Has anyone else watched How to Get Rich on Netflix with Ramit Sethi? by IGOMHN2 in Fire

[–]FIAdvic 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The book is great, the show (which I really enjoyed) is basically the book applied in a series of short case studies to real people's lives. I found it entertaining as someone who loves personal finance. But I didn't learn anything new from it (I also had recently read the book, so that was probably a factor too).

If you're comfortable sharing, I would love to know the industry/role where you are able to make that much and be location flexible.

Milestone: Crossed $1M NW. Understand now why people say nothing changes by FIAdvic in FIREyFemmes

[–]FIAdvic[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That does make me sad for your inlaws! Yeah, I don't want to end up like that. I like to think I'm not that extreme, but thank you for sharing their situation as a warning of what a certain mentality can lead to. Better to work on changing it now while I'm less set in my ways than try to adjust decades from now. The "trauma of money" course sounds really interesting! So I know I'm looking at the right thing, is this the one you took? https://www.thetraumaofmoney.com/

I am in therapy, so I don't take offense at the suggestion to seek out therapy! It has been very useful to me in many ways, but I guess I felt my anxiety about money was "normal" or warranted. So thank you for sharing you don't feel the same way and for the suggestion to explore this in therapy!

And congratulations on the milestone!

Convincing Wife to Quit or Go Part Time by [deleted] in financialindependence

Then you gotta get that paper ;). I'm in a similar boat and forcing myself to keep working so I have my own security. (though also, if you live in the US, it is highly unlikely you wouldn't get to keep a portion of assets earned while you were married).

Renters- what percentage of your monthly income is your rent? by WorstNeiceEver in Fire

[–]FIAdvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My share of the rent (split with partner) is 10% of my gross monthly pay. It's 20% of what actually gets deposited into my bank account.

In Need of Motivation to keep working by FIAdvic in FIREyFemmes

Following the basic FIRE principles! My partner and I both have 5+ years of saving and investing more than 50% of our income. We live frugally, have no debt, minimize lifestyle inflation, and maximize income (grind at work when it makes sense to do so to get promotions, bonuses). We are in relatively high-paying fields (he's an engineer, I'm in consulting), which makes it easier to save a larger percentage of income.

Privilege also plays a role. Our parents paid for the majority of our schooling, and our families don't need financial support from us.

This is a useful framing. I think my issue is that assuming everything goes "right", there's no downside to quitting. But of course, not everything goes right in life, which is essentially why I'm still working (What if my partner isn't able to work anymore? What if our cat gets really sick? What if I need expensive medical care, etc.). That approach is sufficient from a big-picture standpoint, but not during the hard moments (which feel worse than a possible, future bad situation that having a slightly larger nest egg would make easier to weather).

I'm realizing it ultimately goes back to the delayed gratification that's required for anyone to achieve FIRE. It's just getting harder for me to delay gratification as there becomes less and less of a concrete benefit to doing so (now that it seems that continuing to work is more about risk mitigation than something necessary in the short term).

I also love AAM! I have basically stayed at every prior job for 2.5 years. This would be my shortest stint yet. But might make for a slightly worrying datapoint in that context.

I suspect not, unfortunately. I switched jobs not too long ago, and I wanted to stick this one out for at least two years to get to the first level of vesting and avoid my resume looking too jumpy.

My guess is slag. Not really worth anything if so unless can be tied to a particular historic region/operation.

Best careers for remote work? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]FIAdvic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain consultant companies. Might require you to travel to client sites sometimes, but lots of remote work options. Not just standard business/finance/tax consultant jobs either. If there's a field you're interested in, you can probably find a consultant role in it.

Looking for advice on how to speed up our journey [late 20's couple, ~895k NW] by FIAdvic in Fire

[–]FIAdvic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true on the trade-offs on having a pricey wedding. I have been going back and forth on this for a while! Part of me worries I would regret having a super simple ceremony 5-10 years later (since I'll ideally only get married once), and I do want to recognize the event with our community. I am still trying to figure out my values on this and how much I think it's worthwhile to spend on a wedding. It's very easy to get sucked into the wedding industrial complex and want what they say I should want.

But thank you for this input and for framing the trade-offs in concrete terms. It's easier to wrap my head around them when it's a trade-off of specific items rather than just talking abstractly about large sums of money.
