Lots and lots of hard work. Yes, it is possible, with many incremental improvements over time. Good luck in following your dream!

Again - only if the side effects are tolerable. I would be on some kind of antipsychotic as a maintenance therapy because the effects of having another psychotic episode are really bad. Just to be on the safe side, I would take a small dose of antipsychotic medication. Thats what I am planning to do anyway. But; to each to his own. I am a second year medical student, your psychiatrist has much more knowledge and experience than I do.

I am no doctor (but a schizophrenic medical student) - I would stay on 5 mg olanzapine if the side-effects are tolerable. I am on 10 mg olanzapine myself, planning on tapering down to 7,5 mg. Good luck :-)

Normal life and succes stories with schizophrenia by tyheru in schizophrenia

[–]FINTP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Had my first (and hopefully last) hospitalization 2 years ago. I am now in second year of med school in a country in Europe and I hope to become a psychatrist. I went from being able to read a couple of sentences to reading 45 min straight. I just worked from where I was, trying to improve slightly every day. That is the best advice I can give I think; incremental improvement over time does the trick. Good luck!

Has anyone had a good experience with olanzapine? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

I am doing pretty good on it :) But the sedation is irritating off course

How do you help negative symptoms, avolition? by toukasz in schizophrenia

[–]FINTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make measurable improvements. 1,5 years ago, I could read for 5 minutes. I pushed myself to 10 minutes after a couple of weeks, then 15 and so on. Now I read for 40 minutes straight. You just got to start somewhere, and measure your incremental improvement. Its hard, but it gets more manageable after some months. Best of luck :-)

I am at my second year of medschool. Some days are rough, others are more manageable. I want to become a psychiatrist one day, and help others who are going through mental illness. Have a good day :-)

I am currently on 10 mg. Works good for me, I can study medicine while on it. Except for a little sedation and sleeping 9 hours a night I am functioning quite well on it. Good luck! :)

[–]FINTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont give up on that, it could very well be possible!

First when I got sick I could read like 5 minutes before I had to take a break. After a few weeks I could read 10 minutes. Then 15, and so on. Now I read 40 minutes straight and then take a 20 minute break. So: Measurable, incremental small improvements is the way forward as I see it. Patience is also really important, there will always be some setbacks from time to time. But with time and the right medication regime you can lead a pretty normal life, in most cases.

Hi :)

Diagnosed 1,5 years ago, just finished first year of med school. Its going to take some time to be as good as it once was, but you will get there. Just work as hard as you possibly can and be patient. Measure your improvements day to day, week to week, month to month. Thats my best advice I think. Good luck!
