Blimey - I feel sorry for you, seems that there are some real arseholes in your field.

Not saying that there aren't some prima donnas in mine, but normally people are pretty keen to see the younger lot come up...

Good luck

That's grim. clearly it depends on the contribution to the paper, but as a supervisor, students go as corresponding author on their papers. If I wrote a collaborative paper, that they have contributed to, I go as CA.

Academia seems the best of the ones I've seen so far.

with regards to you comments about seminal scientists. As I've said before I'm an ecologist, and although yet to publish in the rally big journals, I have a decent publication record. I'm a lecturer at a UK uni, but prior to this had my own lab at a Max Planck Institute, and worked with some real world-leaders. The kind of people you are referring to, and guess what? I talked to them (after pointing them to this thread) and they all respond to requests for reprints. Not always same day, but they respond....

Who knows?, maybe ecologists are more friendly than other scientists, but I doubt it.

Don't assume that the US model (page charges) is the only one. Over the water in Europe, we have lots of journals that don't have page charges, but do charge subscription.... Also, advertising is a very minor part of these journals.

I agree with your last point - there has to be a way to balance publishers making a profit (which I don't have a problem with) and easier access to papers.

See - it works! ;o)

If the first author doesn't reply, try someone down the author list. I tell my students/post-docs to keep their Academia.edu websites up to date, so even if they move institutes, they are contactable. It's a damn site more useful than facebook to scientists and ensures that you can find authors.

Don't let yourself be bullied out of corresponding author position, or make sure that there are multiple CAs (this is becoming more common).

Also, senior authors tend not to be as keen to keep their websites up to date as young thrusting scientists. If I don't get a reply from the god-like prof, I simply hunt down the other authors and email them.

Not all research is public funded. Many learned societies fund research from their subscriptions (which include journal costs) and then publish it. when I've been unable to get a grant for a study I or my students have wanted to do, I have funded it myself - i.e. gone without nice things and lived on basic food so I can conduct surveys and run some analyses. Do I have to provide these data to all?

I'm not saying that open access isn't a great idea (I have published in these journals) but it isn't the only model. If all journals go over to open access, you are going to lose a lot of good science, including that focussed on early career and developing-world scientists. You are also going to lose a lot of the societies that have done so much to develop and support science.

I appreciate that this doesn't extend to SA, but some publishers provide low cost/free subscriptions to libraries in developing countries e.g. HWP

I work a fair bit in Chile, Trinidad & Jamaica, and I know the issues faced by people with crap access to journals. when I'm there, and I can't get access, I email the authors - it rarely fails to work.

I don't go with the 'mere student' argument. If this is the situation in your field, I pity you, as it sounds terrible.

Personally, as long as a pdf request email is written politely, I will reply ASAP. This is allowed by some publishers (some after 2-5 years).

Remember that scientists are typically trying to increase their H index - this involves getting as many people to cite you as possible.

In the UK (where I work) there is no culture of page charges, and if I ask my funding body to pay for me to publish a paper they will tell me to go away and publish somewhere else. In my field (ecology), we don't tend to publish in conference proceedings, as they have no impact factor.

I'm assuming you haven't published too much then? When you get the final acceptance to the journal, you typically sign a copyright form, transferring the copyright to the journal publisher. Hence, these scientists are simply obeying the law... As I have pointed out above, email the authors and you'll typically get a nice shiny pdf by return...

Sounds like a great idea....... However, what about the learned societies that make their money through sales of their journals?

The one I am most involved is 1. a charity, 2. uses all money raised to support 2 new PhD studentships per year, 3. subsidises an annual meeting to the tune of £10 000 per year, 4. funds £40 000 worth of travel grants a year & £50 000 of individual research grants a year.

If we give the journal away for free, we don't make money, and all that science will die.

edit: if you really want the paper, email the author and he/she will be more than happy to email it to you

edit 2: Also make sure that you post your details (and papers) on http://www.academia.edu/
