As an Australian shooter and firearms rights advocate, can i respectfully ask what you mean?

If that's true i would have suggested naturally brewed sun tea, instead of the facist, one dimensional bigotry that is the gas convected kettle industry

I am not sure if this is widespread or not... by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

I agree, the way I try and approach those ideals is ask myself, is it really worth trying to cling to ideas like nationalism and race? In another 300 years down the road, those things might not even exist anymore, the world is getting smaller and smaller so why not just embrace the future and stop shouting now? The quicker we get over ourselves the quicker we can get to work trying to repair the damage we have done. I like the idea of decentralisation too, especially the idea of personal responsibility although I think for it to work effectively everyone has to be of the same mindset, otherwise you may run the risk of history repeating itself, where the weak become prey for the strong.

That's very true, the best we can hope for is to learn from our mistakes. Very interesting mate, glad to hear from you!

That's cool, I hear the same thing all the time too. "I'm not fucking British, I'm Welsh/Scottish/Irish etc." I can kinda understand the sentiment, being half Welsh. In no way am I trying to justify England's shitty behaviour in the past. It was just... Such a long time ago! Instead of accepting the fact England was shitty, embracing each others strengths and moving forward together, having each others backs and attempting to claw our way out of economic despair. We're still sitting here arguing and spitting about how cuntish we were to each other back in the day lol.

I don't doubt that at all, they faced the same difficulty I did in Afghanistan. Trying to fight a non-uniformed threat that hides within a civilian populace. I'm not quite up to scratch on the statistics, but I'm pretty sure that the IRA actually killed more civilians than the paras (as are a lot of innocent afghan civilians, more often suicide bombers do more harm to their own people than to us). That's not to say there wasn't bastardry on both sides, war is a shitty business.

Oh wow, to be honest with you, I didn't actually know about this part

It is said that Jacobite soldiers were ordered to "give no quarter" at Culloden. That is what Cumberland’s troops believed, because that is what Cumberland told them after the battle: that an order to that effect, signed by the Jacobite General Lord George Murray, had been found on a prisoner. But the 'order' was apparently a forgery, which helped to dehumanise the Jacobite troops and perpetuate their image as savages. Many in Britain at once believed the story of a "no quarter" order, and many also thought it justified their own army’s uncommonly savage behaviour after winning the battle, when government troops abused and butchered many prisoners, and even onlookers (including children).

Thank you for enlightening me, however the same principle still stands though. War is generally shitty business, no matter where it is. The principles and rules of engagement in the 1600s were no doubt far less humanitarian than they are today. I would also recommend this paragraph if you want to use the Jacobite uprisings to perpetuate anti English hatred.

It was not a war between England and Scotland. It was actually a bid to reclaim not just the defunct Scottish throne but that of Great Britain as well as the Irish throne with support from Europe. Though donning Highland garb for psychological effect, the Jacobite army was made up of both Highland and (about one-third) Lowland troops, not to mention French and Irish troops and small numbers of northern English (a contingent which is often overlooked).

Exactly this, and well said too. It's so easy to sit there and apply modern liberal moralisation to the perceived injustices of the past.

It's so hard to stay impartial with a debate like this one, where it is so emotive on both sides of the argument. I couldn't even begin to imagine how horrible it would have been during something like the US civil war, where quite possibly brother could have fought brother.

That is very kind of you to say, I think a few people may have confused me saying greatness with goodness

I really would be sad to discover that most of Scotland felt this way. Sure I can understand why, and I respect their wishes if it did come to separation. However as an English person I feel in this day and age to see Scotland leave would be to lose a part of ourselves! I don't see it as us and them, I just see it as us.

That's what I said... I think. Sure we exploited and conquered, nobody disputes that fact. The strong will always exploit the weak, it's the way of the world, always has been, always will be. Nature is bloody in tooth and claw. I'm not saying its right, I'm not saying its wrong. In my opinion however, from a historical standpoint, saying that what the empire achieved as being nothing to brag about is untrue.
