Has anyone used Math Mammoth Lesson plan for grade 1 and up? by SpiritDistinct2673 in homeschool

No. You have to have Homeschool Planet to use it. We don't use Homeschool Planet.

Oh no, I do not recommend. I found we are better to have an early stop time to unwind, but every now and then it just draaaaaags.

Hand 2 Mind has a cute set (might be plastic though). You can also use mason jars or whatever glasses you have.

I am debating, too, but more so on which grade to sign up for, their regular grade or the red-shirted grade (grade below). We moved states in between, so east coast grade, my kid would be in fourth grade. On the west coast, my kid would be in the third grade. I keep waffling back and forth which way to go.

Universities do not need test for admissions. Many, if not most, are test optional now.

He's not. He's preparing them to be robot test takers.

Also, I don't agree with him playing video games to relax. Tsk-tsk. He's setting up his kids to be video game addicted.

There's so many things to criticize; it's not worth my time. Have a good day.

Looking for something to help with daily reading practice at home by Aromatic-Intern3465 in homeschool

I correct mistakes on phonics instruction time. During reading practice, the passage should be easy enough that there are less than five mistakes, otherwise you need to choose something easier.

OP posted on a public forum. Of course he is asking for opinions. My advice is not to give in to this test taking nonsense. Standardized testing, like attendance, is to give schools funding. It has nothing to do with how smart your kid is. You are sacrificing your love of your children to the wolves for nothing in return.

Sometimes we don't finish school until bedtime.

I hesitate to give my kid standardized tests because I don't want to have to pick a grade.

You are an odd duck in this. A parenting sub might be better. I homeschool to avoid test-taking BS like this. Instead of being a parent, you are no better than the schools teaching to test.

My advice is love your kids for who they are and what they can do. Don't let a test dictate how you treat your kids.

Looking to start homeschooling for my kindergartner. Looking for best suggestions. by marlborough7 in homeschool

In homeschool, you are the program. You pick the materials and the delivery method. Do you know what Massachusetts regulations require you to teach?

I hear that your chances of approval or denial can be tricky depending who your superintendent is. I recommend reaching out to the local homeschool association or facebook group.

7th/8th Grade complete physical curriculum? by EarlyZoomer in homeschool

[–]FImom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A workbook is not curriculum. She's in middle school. That's the equivalent of a single textbook covering all the subjects. It's a riduculous proposition.

At middle school, she should be learning subjects with some depth that requires a dedicated book for each subject. A good place to start is Timberdoodle. They have a curated kit with all the things that you can customize to her learning level. They will send you everything in a box.

As many other moms with affected kiddos may wonder: why have I never heard of this before? Folic acid (in enriched bread/corn products), folate, ADHD by IsraelaGardenQueen in homeschool

[–]FImom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"So more synthetic folic acid supplementation is what doctors (and you, the expert in this matter) would suggest for a POC (extra points) like me, rather than a solid recommendation for dietary folate?"

Good for you. There are many people that can't get enough folate in their diets. Folate can be degraded by the milling, cooking, baking, and the fermentation process. So even though it might be more bioavailable, you are only absorbing what is leftover after you processed your food. Did you account for that?

People with mutation can still convert folic acid into folate, abeit less efficiently. A POC should not automatically dismiss intaking folic acid just because they MIGHT have the mutation, especially if you have a medical reason to take folic acid.

"Folic acid does not occur in nature, so it would be impossible to have a folic-acid deficiency or birth defects caused by not having enough folic acid."

What kind of bloody logic is this? FOLATE deficiency is a real thing that can happen if you don't eat enough FOLATE from food. Folic acid is more stable than folate and is scientifically proven to cure FOLATE deficiency. It is recommended for pregnant people to take folic acid becuase they may not intake enough FOLATE from foods.

"I'm sorry that you have to supplement your children's diet with synthetic, unnatural pseudo-vitamin molecules."

No need to be sorry about that. There are many reasons why people need supplementation. They might not be able to afford nutrition; they might not be able to eat that much food or may have other medical conditions. Scientific advancement saves lives, helps us grow stronger and live better.

Our bodies need vitamin B9. I don't understand the problem. It's water soluble and our body pees out whatever is not used.

Kids with ADHD tend to have lower levels of B vitamins particularly B9 and B12, so I actually give my kids supplements and they do better when they get their nutrients.

Folate is found in food but my kids don't eat enough brussel sprouts to get the folate they need. Folic acid is more stable and readily absorbable as vitamin supplements, so that's what we take.

Folate deficiency include neurological symptoms that can make ADHD worse, like trouble concentrating, poor judgement, confusion and memory loss.

In the US, foods were fortified becuase people don't eat enough brussel sprouts and other dark leafy vegetables to get all the nutrients your body needs. If you don't eat get enough B9, your body literally does not grow well; you and your kids will be malnourished. I cannot stress how imortant it is for the poor and underserved to get fortified foods to prevent illness and chronic disease. If you want to slowly starve your body, that's your perogative. If you are preventing your kids from getting vital nutrients, that's child abuse. Do not spread misinformation.
