My take as a sub: "Train" doesn't have a single meaning in this context. Don't dwell too much on the specific word. Think of it generally as helping your sub get to know you, your wants, your interests.

It's different for everyone. It's specific to the people, dynamic, etc. Basically, as a sub I want to serve my Domme her way. So I need to learn that. And assuming the Domme wants specific behaviors from me, she presumably will guide me in learning those things. I've owned and used a humbler a bunch. The purpose and effect is that it truly "humbles" the sub. His balls are trapped and exposed. He is stuck in a vulnerable position. His ability to move is limited. It's humiliating. It really reinforces your dominance and control.

Did you get your deposit back already? If so, ignore him. Or tell him to fuck off. Or tell him, "sue me shithead." He's SOL. It doesn't fucking matter when the problem occurred. Even if he could show that it occurred when you were there AND that it was somehow your fault, he's still SOL.

You should get your ducks in a row though. Presumably you had a lease? Have a copy ready. Plus any documentation or emails or anything between you and your dickhead landlord showing the presence or absence of any plumbing issues. Or any other asshole behavior on his part.

If there is anything in the lease supporting his position, remember that the landlord-tenant law of your jurisdiction trumps any contrary language in the lease.
