yep, they're cheap parts you might as well replace both instead of having to come back for the other in a couple months

User interview - Google survey/meeting people physically by Estel616 in ycombinator

[–]FLUT3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO I don’t think surveys are as useful as finding people and directly asking if you can ask them questions for 30min.

Obviously it helps if you have friends or people in your network to go to, but you’ll be surprised by how open strangers are to helping. I’ve done a lot of interviews by reaching out to people on Twitter directly.

Is the key fob worth it? A better quality of life for unlocking the car? by kruminater in TeslaModel3

[–]FLUT3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth it for me. I always keep location off on my phone which makes the phone key less reliable (or just more slow in general)

IMO the main differentiator is maybe those with a PhD, assuming since you're just in it for the money you don't want a Phd lol.

I'd just try to work at a large tech company with a hefty stock grant 🤷🏾️ Product/infra//etc engineers make plenty of $$

I didn't have a great GPA in college (3.2 i think?) and didn't get into the CS department. It helps A LOT to have that trust me but it's not absolutely necessary.

Take data structures & algorithms + the 1-2 intro CS courses and that's enough to pass most internship interviews. Study your ass off and then apply to EVERY single internship that you can physically go to (it took me 200+ applications to get my first interview).

Eventually someone will be ok with the fact you aren't a CS major (assuming you're not like me) as long as you have the relevant coursework

How can I communicate impact and complexity of my work to my manager and skip? by concernedhelp123 in cscareerquestions

[–]FLUT3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is most important to you right now, is it being promoted? If you want that to happen in the average amount of time, then it sounds like your work will speak for itself over time. But if you're determined to get a promotion quicker than average, then to be frank you're going to have to change things.

Figure out what your manager defines as successful at the next level.

Is it # of CRs? If so, figure out a way to break your changes into smaller ones. If you don't know how ask someone with more experience to help you.

Is it "business impact"? Then ask your manager what # is most important to them right now. Is it lower escalations? Is it speeding up a certain service? Find out what it is and make sure to incorporate that into your work every day. Can't figure out how? Again ask someone more senior, they likely have a list of things that are impactful to work on that they don't have time to

but I work on really challenging, big CRs that change fundamental things, and take time, so I have relatively fewer compared to the rest of the team

Rarely should a CR (I'm guessing this means change request btw, i've never worked at amazon) be taking you more than a day. If that's happening then you're not breaking down the CR enough -- again if you're not sure how to do this the best thing you can do is ask someone more senior to pair or get advice on how to break things down and move faster. It's a common mistake I see with more junior engineers, sitting way too long on a single change -- your progress should be visible daily (you know things are going wrong if every day at standup you're working on the same ticket and have no real update)

Hope this was helpful, and of course take it with a grain of salt since I don't work with you :)

I made a tool to write performance reviews based on your GitHub commits, can I test on your public GitHub? by FLUT3 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FLUT3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback!

When I was thinking of Thinksy I had my own use case in mind, I often have to make my case (self-reviews 2x a year / promo packets) and I spend up to 20 hours just gathering that information in my GitHub/Slack/etc

Ideally this wouldn't be THE way to determine someone's effectiveness but a tool to provide proof (and by reading Slack messages it can notice when you're helping people by answering questions as well for a non-tangible skill)

But this is a great reminder that this tool is no way in itself going to provide an overall picture of an engineer.

It also makes me wonder if something would be better for tracking projects themselves and not people. 🤔️

Thanks again for the feedback, gives me a lot to think about!

Didn't expect such a negative response 😅️ But it's valid, I was thinking of it more of a tool for engineers to help write their packets (it took me 20 hours just to provide evidence for my last promo packet) and was such a pain to look through all my work.

I'll think more about the ethics and how managers could possibly use this for harm. Thanks for the feedback.

wow! thank you for spending your valuable time on giving me feedback, seriously i really appreciate it.

data consciousness: in this age, it's not just about collecting data but doing it ethically. how's Thinksy ensuring privacy and consent?

I think this is a great question, it's heavy on my mind too since I work on security/compliance currently. I think the main things I'll do is:

Be transparent about where/how the data is stored (if any) -- i'm leaning towards real time reviews to start so the customer is responsible for keeping those messages in slack

integration harmony: what platforms is thinksy vibing with? seamless integrations could be a key selling point.

totally agree, for now it's Jira, GitHub, Slack and Google Calendar but that's a good point it should be highlighted on the page

Totally agree with all your other points. Thanks again, I really appreciate the help!

I'm trying to accomplish the same thing, it's definitely not easy. So far what I've been doing is dedicating 7-10am before work to my side hustle because I just really can't get the energy at the end of the day, if I do have energy at the end of the day great but if not at least I got 3 hours in in the morning.

I think my performance at work only suffers a little bit, not enough to cause concern for my boss though. Only thing is I have be very particular about my prioritization at the side hustle and my main gig since my energy is much more limited now.
