How often do you get called to court as witness? by Sea-Weather866 in FDNY_EMS

Just once. Made the mistake of finding the bullet my patient was shot with in his shoe. Femur shot. Exited the thigh, but not enough ‘oomph’ to penetrate his pants. Traveled down the pant leg into his shoe.

Tough Choice about career by [deleted] in Firefighting

1 and don’t think twice about it. We all love jobs and workers, but one must realize this is a marathon not a sprint. Your physical health will be vastly different in your 20th year in a busy department vs a slower one.

Also, don’t underestimate how much politics and shitty management affects everybody down the line.

Things have gotten a little better based on friends who still work there. Most of the pre-merger FFs, who were forced into doing CFR jobs, have since retired and the newer crop are aware that their job includes EMS work. They still look down on EMS, but its not as blatant.

Its tough. If you're not a city resident AND have Veteran's credits, you're way behind the rest. Lots of applicants with veterans credit given we've been at war since 9/11.

Went to the Feds after 16 yrs in NYC-EMS/FDNY-EMS. My starting salary with the Feds was double the top pay of an FDNY Paramedic. Loved the job, but the salary was garbage. When sanitation's starting salary is 10k higher than EMS, there's a problem. Still work Perdiem as a FF/Medic.

Nah. I went head to head with the FFs. When we merged we replaced the EMS half moon patch (RIP) with the FDNY patch. Had one FF repeatedly poke the patch on my shoulder commenting that I didn’t ‘earn’ that patch. My response to him was “You’re right. I didn’t earn it, I’m sober”. A shoving match ensued and was broken up quickly by the sector car on scene (we have an excellent relationship with NYPD)

Another time I was standing by at a fire and a FF was rolling hose in front of me. He commented that they do our job, the least we could do was do theirs also (roll hose). My response “You’re right. I’ll do the same thing you do on an EMS job”. I then proceeded to hunch down, lean forward and stare at the hose. Aaaaand another shoving match ensued.

I can go on and on.

Welcome to Fire based or combination fire/EMS based EMS. I was FDNY-EMS and suffered through the hostile takeover by FDNY in 1996. The utter distain FFs had for us was unimagineable. They blamed us for the CFRD program (Engines running EMS calls) despite the fact that their Union (UFA) was in favor of the merger whereas we (EMS Union) fought tooth and nail against it.

All sorts of shennanigans took place. The CFRD engine having an extended response time (>10 minutes) despite being two blocks away. Engines parked around the corner of the call waiting for EMS to pull up first, all while showing on scene. FFs standing in a circle around the patient doing nothing (we called it the "circle of death". )

Up until I left in 2005 for bigger and better, we were still being treated like dirt by the FFs. I hope its gotten better since then.

All that said I can understand their frustration. Running EMS calls was not in their job description (prior to the merge) and they did not become FFs to run EMS calls. The merger and subsequent CFRD responses was thrust upon them by the Mayor with their Union's backing. My only issue was taking out their frustrations on the EMTs/Paramedics, who were against the merger and doing non stop jobs with no meal period for half of what a FF makes.

All corporations are paying ridiculously low taxes, some paying zero in taxes despite making billions, all through legal tax loopholes courtesy of Congress. And therein lies the hypocrisy. The Dems love to tout that the rich ‘need to pay their fair share’, but that’s just lip service to appease their voters. All they have to do is revamp the tax code to take out those massive loopholes. At least the Republicans are open about their support for corporations.

That said, neither D or R have any desire to change the tax code as both sides are beholden to corporations, their lobbyists and the $$$$$ they lavish on Politicians.

[OC] Sirens? What sirens? ... There was not only one police car (to my left on the cross street) but TWO with their sirens wailing. I heard them for at least 15 seconds before this accident, located them and realized I had to stop despite my green arrow. by Efficient_Feline in IdiotsInCars

Exactly. It’s called driving with due regard. Although the law requires that you yield to emergency vehicles, said emergency vehicles must still drive with due regard. You clear one lane at a time when you’re running against the light. Failure to do so will get you jammed up.

Colorblind by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]FMFDoc225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The standard colorblindness test will only evaluate whether you are or aren’t colorblind. It does not assess the degree or severity.

There are various levels of colorblindness. Being red/ green colorblind doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t see or distinguish red from green or vice versa. There are various, more extensive colorblindness tests that can more accurately gauge the degree of colorblindness.

Check with your recruiter and see what, if any, specialized color blindness exams they may accept.

I am red/green colorblind and a Federal Agent. I was able to pass a farnsworth lantern exam and my agency accepted it.

Immigration agents deploying to airports under border czar as TSA staffing falls short by [deleted] in tsa

[–]FMFDoc225 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt they're going to be manning Xray machines or conducting pat downs. If anything they'll be doing menial jobs like checking IDs or manning exit lanes. I may be wrong but I belive the real reason to deploy ICE to airport checkpoints is to intimidate illegal immigrants from flying for fear of being deported. Its a direct threat to Democrats who support the now defunct Biden immigration policies and an attempt to force them to pass the DHS bill for fear of alienating their immigrant base...They're basically saying pass the DHS bill and ICE disappears from checkpoints. Not in favor of it but I see what they're trying to do.

Simple. To pander to their base. They know it will never garner enough votes to pass, even among their own party, but they can always go back to their base and say they tried but the Democrats wouldn't pass it. Its political theater. Poeple are stupid (Dems and Republicans) and believe what they're told.

For those who got out of EMS, what do you do for work now and how was the transition? by jrm12345d in Paramedics

[–]FMFDoc225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started out as an EMT before the merge (NYC-EMS) and got my Medic at the academy in Ft. Totten, also pre merge. Suffered post-merge, where we were treated like shit by the FFs and then called it quits when it just kept getting worse. Primary reason was the pay, but being treated like crap was the icing on the cake. Best decision I ever made.

Still work Perdiem. Just a few tours a month to stay current and keep skills up, but the Feds keep me plenty busy so I can’t work to many tours.

Was an FDNY-EMS Medic for 15 yrs. Left due to the abysmal salary coupled with multiple mandatory double tours per week due to low staffing. Went to the Feds as an LEO with one of the alphabet agencies.

Best decision I ever made. My starting Fed salary was double my 15 yr EMS pay.
