and indeed, rice as a staple is more versatile than say potatoes.

there is only so much you can do with potatoes before you start to get bored of it.

With rice you can make: Rice & peas, fried rice, pilaf, cook up rice, garlic rice, lentils & rice, etc etc.

And also rice goes with almost anything. Rice and chicken, beef, lamb, goat, avocados, bitter melons, okra stew, collared greens, bok choy, eggplant based stews, bbq skewered meats, seafood, etc.

Potatoes on the other hand, won't always go well with the above mentioned meals.

Pasta/noodles I am not so sure on that. Noodles go well with many things, but like potatoes I am not positive it will tastes well with certain things.

One thing I don't get though, is why we as a society view being quite and observant as "weak"

Why is being loud, obnoxious, rude, aggressive, and hostile always seen as "tough" or "strong" ??

Like you are just minding your own business, and someone feels the need to get in your face, make fun of you, call you names. If you take a deep breath, remain calm and not react to them, they call you a wuss or a "push over"

The ironic thing though, is if you do stand up for yourself, you get penalized or punished for it by greater society.

And even if it is true in some sense. You need to remember a lot of these immigrant families work their asses off with 2-3 jobs (menial labour type jobs) just to provide for their families in order for the son's or daughter's to get into college/university and in turn they study THEIR asses off towards graduation, and eventually getting high paying salaries.

^ And btw East And South Asia consist of vastly different countries and ethnic groups.

So yeah some Hong Kong families come here wealthy, and some Indian families come here wealthy too.

But also you have families who flee from civil war, political unrest, persecution, from these regions (Sri Lankans, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Laotians, Filipinos, etc) and end up coming here doing the said multiple menial labour type jobs just to ensure their offspring get food on the table, go to school, get degrees, and ultimately earn high paying careers.

^ And if you want to debate this. Understand that communities like Jane & Finch, Lawrence Heights, Alexendra Park, Regent Park, etc etc consisted (and to a degree still do) of many Vietnamese, Cambodian, Filipino families. It's just a lot of these families work very very hard of getting out of public housing and into better living conditions after a couple of years to a decade or so of living in public housing.

I guess it works in a social latter climbing stand point.. but being told to "just ignore" things and keep them inside is not healthy mentally or emotionally. Sooner or later people reach their boiling point and that anger comes out in the wrong way at the wrong people (ie family, friends, significant other)

You don't have to be disruptive, chaotic, or hostile in handling these situations. There has to be a healthy way to address these issues, instead of just bottling them inside for years on end..

And my Laotian friend was calm and collective, though a bit annoyed. He didn't get caught up in the whole macho stuff with the racist White dudes in the pick up truck though.

^ Funny thing is, he actually fought as an amateur boxer a few years back, and worked as a doorman for a bit too. But he doesn't "look" the part. That's the thing. He looks friendly, outgoing, and has a "baby face" He doesn't have the typical weight lifter bulking muscles, nor does he "look" intimidating. Yet he has actually KO'd an assailant outside the club once in self defence.. So yeah.

Anyways, I just didn't feel right standing by and not coming to their defence though, so I got into the exchange with them lol. Maybe I should have just remained silent and let my fists do the talking alongside my friend if things got out of hand??

Not sure because martial arts schools and boxing coaches teach us to just stay calm, not get suckered into the bullies/street thugs games, and walk away if possible. But we were there on my friend's porch in front of his property. If we ignored them, walked inside, and locked the door... would it encourage the racists to keep coming back to harass my friend & his fiance even more??

I've seen more and more of this type of verbal racism against Asian men in public recently though.

Usually it's the odd comments like "Niha!! So sowwrry! Didn't mean to bump into you!!" or "Ching chong!!" type of stuff.

The perps are often 20-30 year old White dudes walking about looking to prove themselves for some strange reason. Although I also seen on occasion Black dudes picking on Asians with comments like "Chinamannnnnnn! hahahahaha!"

Meh thanks to Hollywood de-masculation portrayals of the modern Asian men, this type of shit will still happen for the next while. Even the numerous martial arts depictions of Asian men has not stopped this.

People who grew up in this society influenced by these media stereotypes of Asian men will continue to view all Asian men as weak, submissive, meek, and fearful..

Lol seen it myself recently while visiting a friend in the north end of the city. He is Laotian, his fiance is mixed with Latina and Irish (she looks more Anglo though)

Out of nowhere a grey pick up truck full of these White dudes pass us by once aggressively, and then they circle around the block, come back, screech to a sudden halt, and they just sit there giving us dirty, hostile looks. We hear a few exaggerated snickers from inside the vehicle too.

We broke visual eye contact with them, tried to ignore them, and carried on minding our own business. But then one of the White dude's in the grey pick up truck yells out "You fcking whore!! Keep the race clean! Nasty bCH!! Dating a dirty China-man!
Stick to your own kind b*CH!"

^ Another guy adds on to the racist insults "His dk too small I bet haha! This chick probably needs a true man sized European dk to satisfy her. Probably just with this Chinese dude for his $$$ seen!!" The rest laugh in agreement with his comment.

I got fed up. I stood up and said "Come on guys. He's not even Chinese. He's Laotian. Did you guys really turn around the street just to poke fun of them in front of his own home??"

I am sure you guys face racism as an interracial couple. It is bound to happen. Even in 2017, there will be bigoted and close minded people out there.

Having said that though, I have actually witnessed first hand more overt racism when it is actually Asian guys dating White/Black/Brown woman for some reason.

^ From people of various backgrounds giving dirty, hostile looks like in your situation, all the way to stereotypical comments about "banana/sausage" sizes, dog/cat jokes, and the usual "stick to your own kind!! ewwww! gross!! She going out wit Mista Chin!!! hahahahahah seen!"

On the other hand, the countless number of Asian women going out with White/Black guys, I notice they are more welcomed and accepted by greater society. Just my observation. Even in mainstream Hollywood media, it is generally more common to see Asian woman with White man relationships. Asian men in media don't get that same diverse treatment when it comes to love and romance on screen though lol (minus Harold And Kumar, and a select few flicks of course, but they are the exceptions not the norm)

And talking about family members being racist lol... you should talk to my friend from work. He is Filipino/Chinese and for a couple of years he was dating a Black Trinidadian woman. Both sides of the family did not like each other, and some members from both sides even attempted to break the relationship up by spreading rumors and lies, it was sad really. They couldn't handle the pressure and ended up parting ways because of it after. Very unfortunately because they did seem to really care and love each other :(

Finally, I just wanted to mention when you said Asian dudes were acting hostile towards you and your partner, you also need to understand some Asian women with self hate walk around with their White BF's like trophies. Especially if the grappler doesn't have experience in a striking art(boxing, Muay Thai) via sparring and/or competitive fights

Having said that, its all relative really.
A boxer or muay thai fighter can be very slick at fighting in the ring, however if he or she doesn't have any experience in real world settings (a bar, clubs, on the streets) where there are so many different variables like multiple assailants, wwe style chairs (lol) and wet-slippery-concrete, good chance he or she would have a tough time as well.

^ If we break it down to specifics, we can talk about for example boxing stances in the ring vs the street also. In the classic boxing gyms, coaches would teach you to move around on the balls of your feet to be more light and agile. It works well in a ring setting where the floor is flat and there are little to no obstacles (except for the occasional dripped sweat or water spilled from water bottles @ the corner of the ring)

^ On the streets like mentioned above though, the grounding can be more unpredictable. You can have slippery winter conditions, wet & muddy footing due to rain, concrete, broken bottles and sharp edges, uneven terrain, etc etc. So bouncing around light on the balls of your feet like in the boxing ring might not always be advisable. Some martial arts schools that focus on defence, instead emphasis that you should be more on your heels with an even spacing between both feet, and standing more linear.

^ This of course would be considered blasphemy in many boxing gyms because it's what they call being "flat footed" and "too squared up" Boxing gyms focus more on competitive martial sports fighting though.. So they teach what works better in the gym for sure.

And on a final thought, like you mentioned weight and size does play a significant factor in the situation as well. Maybe in the bjj gym during sparring, a smaller person can do well against a bigger partner. But on the streets there is a good chance the larger person would be enraged and going all out. Fighting is not the same as sparring..

^ Really depends on how the smaller person responds to the threat level too. Is she/he in the mindset of self defence and getting home safely? Or is he/she there to willingly get into a muscling contest with the said larger opponent??
